    I think it was around the 12th century where Norse literature changed the realms to have the Dwarves and their home be the same as the Dark Elves because they wanted to make Hel one of the nine realms.

    @@rutherford5247 Freyja is most definitely not a Valkyrie. The Valkaries take half of dead warriors to Valhall, which is Odin's hall, the other half going to Freyja's Folkvangr. And Hel does not get half the warriors. She and her hall. Hel is more like purgatory, but decent. It's just where everyone goes when they die. Some are taken away to other places, like Valhall and Folkvangr, though.

    so far the god of war interpretation of norse mythology has been pretty interesting, obviously there are major changes with it but one interesting piece of lore they added, and dont worry nothing really spoilery about it was that both darkelves and lightelves live in Alfiem meanwhile the gods originally mistook the dwarves as darkelves and misnamed their realm as svartilhiem

    as far as i can recall it muspelheim and niflheim aren't really part of the worldtree and rather exterior places which existed before the world came to be. it's like a divide of the universe itself with unknown extent which was seperated initially by the ginnungagap, a by all accounts basically bottomless gap in which the mist and washed out things of niflheim poured in to and lifted land. on that land grows the worldtree. but as the same with freya and frigg there isn't really a consensus as to how univeral these ideas were. it was not a standardised religion after all and our accounts are from a later time and specificly from at this time already christian iceland. one thing still, i think midgard is not nessessairily in the middle of it all but a place within boundaries where humanity lives in direct opposition the the idea of uttgard the place outside these boundaries. basically just everywhere without giving specification.

    A good and well made video. Based on the various comments, there's still a tremendous amount of misinformation and misinterpretation of Native European spirituality. Much of the older practices were animistic and the mythology was often metaphorical. It's a deep subject that can't be explained in a single video. A good scholarly source especially in regards to language is Dr Jackson Crawford's channel.

    It is Frigg. There’s a big debate as to whether Frigg and Freya are the same deity or not. I personally see them as separate, since Frigg doesn’t really have the war associations we see with Freya. But myths were an oral tradition, and we have almost none of the original stories anymore, so it’s really just guesswork.

    There is one lore I know with an elf. The lore of Skuld ( not the commonly known Valkyrie Skuld ) who was a Half Elven princess, her mother being an elf. Skuld was a sorceress and necromancer who raised an army of warriors, criminals, norns and monsters and she made her army invincible thru her necromancy, as any solder stricken down would raise as undead. She used this army to kill Hrólfr Kraki and conquer the Danes.

  • @ultimatevtgb7551

    @ultimatevtgb7551

    3 жыл бұрын

    I think Yggdrasil grew gradually, because only Niflheim & Muspelheim existed at the beginning, the primordial substances from those realms combined to create Ymir, which in turn gave life to other beings, then those beings, in turn, create the other realms. The Aesir tribe build homes in a land which they called "Asgard". Odin and his brothers slay Ymir and use his eyelashes to make "Midgard", then they create humans to occupy it. The Vanir tribe also carve out a land for themselves, namely "Vanaheim". The elves live in "Aflheim", the dwarves, born from Ymir's blood, make home in Nidavellir/Svartalfheim. The Giants occupy "Jotunheim" and "Helheim" was reserved for the deads and criminals. Yggdrasil is a tree, and just like any trees, it started off as just a sapling.

    Helheim is not actually an equivalent to hell. It depends on your morality. Valhalla was only for those who died in battle. If you died in ANY other way you went to helheim. However if you were a good and honorable person it was not hell. If you were a good upstanding moral person you were welcomed by friends and family and allowed to enjoy yourself. You would be treated fairly. It was by no means heaven. It would be a bit more like a positive purgatory and hel would see that your basic needs are looked after. However if you were an unjust person and especially a betrayer than it was hell. You would be immortalized and cast into a river of blades and acid and tortured by those you wronged in this life.

    What about Tyr? At one point, he was likely the chief god, not Odin. Also, everyone goes to Hel first, then they're sorted, if necessary, and sent to where they are supposed to go--Valhall, or Freyr's hall, which are both for warriors, or somewhere else. But most people just stay in Hel. It's not like the Christian hell, either. Hel isn't particularly bad at all.

There was only one warrior killed in battle that she got her hands on, I can’t remember all the details from the story but supposedly the warrior was one of Oden‘s favorites. She Took this warrior to spite Odin. Now here is where things get really scary. Even though Oden was the king of the gods, there really wasn’t anything he could do to rescue this warrior because Hel was more powerful than Oden and was the most powerful God in the Norse pantheon. She took orders from no one and merely tolerated Odin‘s kingdom, theoretically she could’ve overthrown him at any time.

    1.) Please don't use final final fantasy, of all games, as a reliable source of info on mythos. It butchers alot of mythology up to make it's own. 2.) That's a angelicized version of one of ODIN's names, so not a actual new god.

    1) I'm not, a lot of figures in Final Fantasy are named after figures from myth and history - Barthandulus, Tiamat, Fenrir, Shiva, Alexander, Knights of the Round, Bahamut, Gilgamesh - and Norse is the most common; 2) I looked him up, like many of those I jus mentioned, who I wasn't already familiar with! It's not like Final Fantasy is the only place that has Odin or any other mythical figure named in it! Yu-Gi-Oh! has an entire trinity of archetypes based on Odin, Loki and Thor, with Jormungandr and Fenrir in there as well alongside those three! As I did say, Norse is like the most referenced mythology! Everyone's referencing it, it seems! Those examples I gave are all other figures from other mythologies! Two from history: Gilgamesh and Alexander!Where I found info on him, it made no mention of Odin, so I didn't see any reason to believe they could be one and the same! Blame my source if you have to blame anyone!

    @@CD-Gaming who said final fantasy was the only one to reference that? Why are you using a lot of "!"? I get the point, but some of these you don't need to yell. You said "norse is the most common" refering to final fantasy in the earlier comment, so no, you didn't say it was the most referenced, and no, not everyone is doing it. When it comes to other media, it's far from mythology, and stuff that does go over it, rarely goes over norse, preferring Greek. If your uncertain of something, and if you have a capable device, Google it to make sure it's legit and not something to that fantasy. I am not blaming any cite for lack of info. People have the ability to read and ask historians for the info about stuff, so while you may have not known, it's always best to make sure it's something that our video maker here can actually review it, and isn't something so minor and minute as one of odin's names, no offense.

    The valkyries dont usually pick people depending on their moral compass. As long as they die in battle, they will most likely go to Valhalla or Folkvangr (Freyja’s version of valhalla). So in theory, if an ISIS soldier died while fighting, he will probably go to Valhalla. Every other person who dies of old age or sickness (like cancer or heart attack) go to Hel and that means most of us in the modern world will probably go there.

    Alex Painter Alex Painter yeah but remember, the vikings were a very warlike race. They valued courage and strength above all and it kinda makes sense that they’ll create their own form of heaven in line with their ideals at that time. But if it’s any consolation, Helheim was very different to the Christian Hell we know. It was seen mostly as a continuation of life after death and not eternal damnation. In a lot of preserved texts, Hel was described in a neutral or even in a positive light.

I've read that the name Surt / Surtr / Surtur apparently means "black" or "black man," i.e., "a man covered in soot or ash." His sword Twilight is definitely firey, as it will burn all of the Nine Worlds at the completion of Ragnarok (only for a new, purified world to emerge afterward, with certain humans and gods, like Vidar and Thor's sons, surviving Ragnarok to live and thrive in the aftermath.) Surt's minions aren't necessarily "fire giants," but are known simply as the Sons of Surt, and they will engage in the final battle along with the rest of Asgard's foes . . . .
