With the love bug, you have to keep in mind that at that time e-mail forwards was how jokes were sent at the time. Just like text memes are now. I recall one I got that was called "the Red Neck Virus" I saved it wanting to do a rewrite for a new joke. But the anti-virus I was using at the time grabbed the text file and quarantined it and would not let me get it. Because "virus" was in the name.

I write trading algorithms and had been doing good for quite some time. Recently I discovered that my VNC (remote desktop) was compromised and access logs showed at least 2 addresses snooping around for a long time and coming back months later. Whilst they could only access trading platform logs and not the whole system as I only loaded basic X11 session, during this period my stats went bad and while I will never have definite proof, I'm starting to make a connection. Now I religiously monitor any connections coming in or out.

Ahh, the early days. Loved the history. I was guilty of playful malware myself I guess as a kid back in the very early days. Worked with a buddy to write a tricky bit of code and sneak it into the floppy boot process. I never thought of the real world consequences of my joke until our pastor mentioned in church that his sermon prep had been interrupted by a primitive chat bot hawking market produce and refused to go away until he agreed. Seems his son, my friend, had found our first "target".

Nice episode!! Thanks!! I work alone and listen to all kinds of things while I do. I usually listen to educational material, sometimes just Best of the Worst or Star Trek TNG episodes I have seen many times before so I don't have to see it. I also listen to radio dramas and the occasional "podcast". However today I noticed that YT had at least Beverly Hills Cop 1&2 free for premium users at least. I played them with the visually impaired feature on(by accident lol) which was kinda nice when listening to a movie even if I have seen them a few times in the past. Besides having that "do do do dotodo do do" stuck in my head I also noticed that Eddie Murphy's character is basically doing the same things that Pen Testers do in both movies! He constantly uses social engineering, lockpicks, and physical "hacks" etc. Anyway it was funny. I have been thinking about attempting to enter that industry a lot lately Thanks to your and other's videos. I know I would be good at it. At least the social engineering, entry tasks, and the creative thinking nessasary. I just have a lot more to learn about "computer hacking". I'm rather proficient with computers and hardware as I repair it in my spare time and have for a living. I just kept myself away from the hacking since I know myself well and didn't want to be tempted to do something stupid with the knowledge. However, now that I know about how it can be used for good....and not things that wpuld get me locked up, I may be willing to play catch up. In fact having not learned it traditionally/over a long time, may even give me an out of the box viewpoint that could allow me to think of ways to do things that others haven't before. Pretty much everything I have approached that way in my life has yielded such results. Anyway, thanks for the inspiration, information, and entertainment! I promise I will not turn to the Dark Side. I actually kinda hate money and don't play well with people that are obsessed with it enough to risk life, limb, or "freedom". PS Please consider looking into how Ukraine is using these technologies/techniques in their defense from putin. Unless you have already and I missed it. There is quite a backlog of episodes to catch up on and it is hard to find new ones when YT only seems to recommend things I have already listened to/watched. 🇺🇦
