If you’ve ever been stuck in the lab late on a Friday night, you know there’s one tool you have to have to get you through to the weekend. I’ve been there, and when it gets late and the pressure’s on, no other tool will do.
That’s right, you gotta stay hydrated. And, the actual location of the Ballmer peak on the BAC to bugs fixed chart is a subject of much controversy, few people deny its existence.
That’s why I was so concerned when I saw our frenemies at Fluke launch a new handheld tool recently. Frankly, I’m shook, and I’m worried that our Keysight offering won’t hold up competitively. And we don’t take that lightly. Also, I love my Keysight bottle opener because it works so well, and if there’s a better option out there I’ll use that instead!
At first, I thought it was all a big joke, with their tongue-and-cheek description of it as a “professional refreshment tool.” But there’s a price and an ordering button, so I had to pick one up myself, I couldn’t stop myself. Weirdest expense report ever.
And it showed up! The question is, which one is better? The Keysight, or the Fluke? Let’s find out.
Ok, Keysight wins for hanging storage, but storage doesn’t matter if it doesn’t open bottles well. Normally I'd rope in my coworkers to test it out but since we're quarantined we have to get creative. Fortunately, we're quarantined with a few certified bottle experts who have taken to the bottle since before they could walk.
Looks like Fluke wins the princess test, too, but I'll take that one with a grain of salt. I think I'll be judge and jury this time.
After testing to the rigorous standards a project like this requires, I have to admit I like the Fluke bottle opener a bit better. We’re going to have to go back to the drawing board and figure this out - I know I can’t sleep at night knowing Fluke is winning this showdown - and our Keysight R&D teams work tirelessly to make sure we have the best tools commercially available. I have an idea to fix this competitive gap that just might work. I think I could turn an oscilloscope into the ultimate bottle opener.
Fortunately, I was able to get a hold of some scrap cases and we can experiment with mounting hardware, cutting tools, and bottle angles. I also have intermittent access to my usual studio workshop, so we’re going to bounce between there and my basement as access allows.
I’ve never worked with this plastic, which is an ABS blend, so it’s going to take some tinkering. I talked to our mechanical engineer, and he recommended just dropping some plastic screws in. I’m not so sure that’s going to be strong enough.
The first thing to figure out is placement. Everyone wants a bottle opener on their scope, no one wants their boss to know there’s a bottle opener on their scope. So, the obvious spot is on the back, and this will also be an easy spot to check material strength.
Unsurprisingly, our mechanical engineer was right, and screws into the plastic hold up pretty ok. It’s not perfect, though, I’d feel much better going into the sheet metal for at least one of these attachment points.
Our test-subject didn’t survive surgery, but we have two more so let’s take a shot at the final build. I should mention that it is a bad, bad, bad idea to do this on your test gear and shouldn’t try this, you’ll void your warranty and have to explain to people that you toasted your scope trying to make a scope for toasts.
We can use our test bucket to figure out exactly where to cut.
Welp, I think we’ve redeemed ourselves, I’m happy to declare us the winner of the April 1st 2020 battle of the bottle openers.

I will be very upset if this isn't an option when ordering new scopes. I'll give Engineering some time to reverse engineer it and add it to production as an option.

Your boss just called. He said to let you know that firing you wasn't an April fool's joke!
Fun fact: A lot of older HP gear came with bottle openers from the factory. The side handles on the 130C, for example (not that I would have EVER used them that way)
I definitely need an oscilloscope to judge this... 🤔
Perfect project to keep things light these days...stay safe Daniel!

Wow that beats the bottle in the desk drawer technique we employed. Very funny, thanks a bunch!
omg the Home Hmprovement reference was awesome
This made me want to do the same to my scope... A very cool idea and a very entertaining video!
Great stuff! More quarantine videos !
The magnet worked! Good job.
Good work, sir! I have panel key from Rittal that opens bottles perfectly. It's well known in industry that uses their panels (CNC manufacturing in my case). Keep up the great work... a Keysight video notification is a sign it's gonna be a good day!

Great review! I suggest all bottle openers supplied for use in a lab environment come with a mandatory warning leaflet explaining the potential disastrous consequences of trying to use the tool to maximize productivity.
As a brewery bottle shop professional before my social contract was rendered inconvenient by whiplash, I can tell you easily make an opener faster and more comfy than the fluke by adding a bend at end of handle.
A company with a sense of humor. I'll have to now save up and get some Keysight bench gear.
I remember on May 15, 2011, I was hunting around for a churchkey and couldn't find one, so I had to make do with what I had. I attempted to use a heatsink, but it kept bending. I eventually used the handle on my telequipment D52. The next day I picked up a churchkey on the way home from work. Certainly not as clean as this mod though! I like how it leaves the BNC and LXI connectors open and you might be able to get a right angle USB adapter in there.

Did you find any bottle necks on the scope when you re assembled it.
Coming up , the keysight vs tektronix weed grinder shootout , it's a blast.
Skookum as frig, I need this scope in my life!
I need a Keysight bottle opener to perform independent replication of the bottle opener tests. I'm thinking that, possibly, the testing methods and measurement tools may not have been up to specification.
I will never ever be able to look at my scope the same way.😂 Nice job👍
Great idea to the it to the shielding, that Fluke design didn't look particularly ESD safe!
Very entertaining
Good job and great video! Makes me smile.. :) This reminds me how friend of mine, back in day's, opened bear with a mobile phone.. :D I'm not so extravagant - usually i use lighters, pliers and very rarely openers..
Did you put nixies inside a scope or is it digitally rendered? What about the Keysight logo Nixie? Is that one going to be used in your video recording studio?
@KeysightLabs
4 жыл бұрын
I did put Nixies in, it's another old scope shell I've had for a while. I'm eagerly awaiting the Keysight nixie from Dalibor Farny, but it is fairly experimental for him and he's still working out burn-in, etc. And yes, I'll likely do a build video + use it as part of the video backdrop.
What scope is that ? I love that form factor..
Would adding a fan to my nes hurt it, and where do i get the power from?
How about a scope with a multi cup holder or ice maker?
I see the resistance was higher for the keysight bottle opener on the princess test. Maybe turn a scopes battery compartment into a spare bottle chiller.

If only I had a scope to attach to my opener..... :c Ps - would a stationary magnet be a problem? The field isn't changing, so could it mess with the circuits? I'm not an expert on this, can someone tell me?

You could 3D print some custom snack trays and attach them at the back of the scope (out of the view of your boss). Of course, this will likely result in many greasy/cheesy fingerprints on your touchscreen scopes. Great video... the outtakes were the best.

definitely not beer on the bottle : ) the edit with bin was very funny..

Great, I'll hold off an extremely large purchase until it's in the production models :) :)
There's a reason the Fluke is better, it's made by Felo. I have numerous sets of Felo Ergonic screwdrivers that are made in Germany and absolutely love them. Best set of bench screwdrivers around.
Im thinking a bottle opener that goes on the BNC's are the way to go :)

There should be a ISO/DIN standard for this kind of problem.
