Who are Tolkien's Wizards? The Lore of the Istari from Lord of the Rings - LotR Lore

Ойын-сауық

Today we look at the lore and background stories of the Wizards from lord of the Rings. Gandalf, Saruman, Radagast and the mysterious Blue Wizards. They are the 5 Istari, sent on a secret mission to aid the people of Middle-earth, but it's difficult for them to help, when they start with conflicts among themselves.
I try to answer many questions, like how did Saruman get Isengard, what happens to Gandalf after Moria and how does he become Gandalf the White, but also Radagast's involvement in the events the led to the War of the Ring. I also talk a lot about the White Council and a bit about Galadriel and Círdan.
After a general part, I look at each Istari separately, so I repeat my self a bit in each section, but there is also something new in each section.

► Mistakes:
- In the video I said the Two Towers represent Orthanc and Barad-dûr. this is mainly my own interpretation of it. I forgot that, Tolkien made this "dust jacket":
tolkiengateway.net/wiki/File:J...
It shows Orthanc and Minas Morgol (once Minas Ithil = Tower of the Moon). But the issue is more complicated. Tolkien never intended to split the books, which was a publisher decision.
He comments on this in Letter 143:
I am not at all happy about the title 'the Two Towers'. It must if there is any real reference in it to Vol II refer to Orthanc and the Tower of Cirith Ungol. But since there is so much made of the basic opposition of the Dark Tower and Minas Tirith, that seems very misleading. There is, of course, actually no real connecting link between Books III and IV, when cut off and presented separately as a volume.
(thanks to John Jones)
- The singular of Istari (plural) is Istar. For some reason I didn't notice and use pretty much always Istari, even when the correct form would be Istar. E.g. it should be: "He was the second Istar [...]"
(thanks to John Jones)
- I say that Gandalf after his "death" potentially ("probably") went to the Halls of Mandos (Aman). This was just a theory by me (he definitely does not talk to the Valar). Ofc he is then revived by Eru. From today's perspective I would say, it's unlikely that he enter the Halls of Mandos in Aman.

Mr. Philosopher Sir... I read the Lord of the Rings series several times. Silmarrillon(sp?) a couple times too. I've played the Avalon Hill lord of the rings table top game Battle for Middle Earth dozens of times in high school. Or course I've seen the various movies including the horrible Rankin Bass effort... I understood more about Gandalf, the Istari, Sauron and the Elves from watching this video than ever have before. You somehow revealed the connections and origins of so many things in a clear easy to understand way. You're videos have made my experience of Tolkien's masterpiece richer and more interesting. I can't wait to go back and re-read them all again. Thanks for all your hard work... Great job!

Thank you, happy that it had this effect and much appreciated :) Tolkien's work is so vast and rich in detail, that connecting them is often very difficult. It takes a ton of research and thinking for me too and I also miss things. So I can relate to this, but I think I'm quite good at explaining complex things in videos.

Remeber also Saruman had the special ability to use his voice effectively to sooth, convince and manipulate the minds of elves and men. So he used his voice against Radagast, and to some degree against Gandalf, Galadriel, and Elrond. i suspect he tried to do the same to Sauron through the Palantir, but Sauron also being an artful deceiver, saw right through Saruman.

+Shaden0040 Yes ,very true! Yet only Elrond ,Gandalf and Galadriel became quite aware of their earlier mistake in listening to Saruman,as he dissuaded them from completely destroying Sauron when they had him there to destroy in Mirkwood in his little stronghold Dol Guldur in 2851 3rd age. Saruman then goes to Isengard ,and is secretly looking for the 1 ring.He is indeed afraid of Gandalf,as he knows he is the Wisest of All the Istari ,and he wears the ring Narya, the Elvish ring of fire."Wielder of the Secret Fire, wielder of the Flame of Anor", (Gandalf tells the Balrog in Moria). Cirdan knew that Gandalf was the greatest of the 5 Wizards as he meets him and gives him the ring upon his arrival in the Grey Haven.

haha yes. Got a question surrounding this a few times, but Tolkien describes it as tobacco or Nicotiana. He was a pipe smoker himself. Quote from the LotR Prologue: There is another astonishing thing about Hobbits of old that must be mentioned, an astonishing habit: they imbibed or inhaled, through pipes of clay or wood, the smoke of the burning leaves of a herb, which they called pipe-weed or leaf, a variety probably of Nicotiana.

This is such a complex story that it is impossible to go a full llifetime w/o having to revisit these books, unfinished stories, movies and many discussions. Thank you for clarifying the important aspects of Eru's timeline. These are presented as stories within stories. Tolkien was brilliant. He drew on his own imagination as well as the collective unconscious. And I love how he had Eru/Valar challenge the Maiar by depowering them (not just masking their full power but actually giving these celestial beings room to grow) and introducing them to guiding Middle Earth to the Age of Men as opposed to destroying Middle Earth before it had chance to evolve. Also giving them to walk among them more as equals and beings they could empathize with...and manipulate. IMO, his "evil trinity" has to be Melkor, Sauron and Feanor, whose hubris made him evil enough to affect all of Middle Earth negatively. Finally, it's hard not to imagine that Tolkien's experiences in World War I didn't concretize this multi-epic myth.

It also often comes down to the magic of video. When I just had he script and was reading it over and over, it felt a bit repetitive. but when you start editing and see the final result I'm often surprised that my concerns are no longer there. The visual layer of the medium magically improved everything or made it smoother. Hard to explain. I really had videos where it thought: oh boy this is will be my worst video. The text is bad. But after editing I really liked it.

Its difficult to know if he is the eldest, definitely very old. But before the time of the sun, or the start of the first age, during the time of the trees, time was not necessarily counted in the same way. Days could have been longer or shorter. Pretty sure in the sillmarillion they mention that to begin with the sun and moon never shone at the same time.. But because the maia of the moon tried to reach the sun, cause he felt like it, not exactly sure why. the set up was changed so the sun and moon appeared together for a time each day (twlight) we dont know how long this took to happen. All of this means giving the oldest elves (cirdan, galadriel) an age is almost impossible

Sadly, I had to repeat myself a lot, because I wanted each section to work alone and also their stories are tied to each other, but often take different branches. There is also a strange background noise at some point (it's not that loud), but it goes away soon. No clue what caused it. I hope you like it :) Also Note: - the r is rolled :D - there are probably a few mistakes PS: Correction: - Somewhere in the video I say It's ofc Bilbo's 133rd birthday. It's Frodo's 33rd birthday and ofc Bilbo's 11th. Both were born at the same day: 22nd of September. I mixed up the numbers, sorry! - probably more :P

Since Tolkien wasn’t really trying to write a story, but rather give England what he saw as a lost history, I’d like to offer up how Gandalf’s wisdom is demonstrative of magic as seen by the ancient view of magic. Tolkien had great difficulty defining magic when asked to define the boundaries of Faerie, but based on his writings about Gandalf and what he was able to say about Magic, (plus his insistence on using the Old English Spelling of the word) it is easy to see his concept of Magic more closely matched those of the Ancient World where Magic was the "Great Work" or the work of the "Wise." In ancient days when people really believed in magic and magical beings such as witches and wizards, there weren’t really “great powers” and spells like we see in so many fantasies and fictions today. In fact, the word magic stems from a title that used to be used for people that practiced Zoroastrianism and could read the stars for signs. The three wise men that brought gifts at Jesus’ birth are also referred to as the three Magi. Magic came from knowledge of the world. Early wizards, druids, shaman, witches, priests, etc. often knew some chemistry or mechanics (this was the showy part of being a temple priest-mixing the right chemicals and using the right mechanics to make the people think they'd seen signs of the power of the Gods) and had some skills we wouldn’t consider magic at all today. Even Gandalf’s “spells” that he casts and items like his fireworks are related to this aspect of ancient magic. Magical peoples were usually the religious leaders and were seen as leaders in that sense. Some of them were seen as able to talk to, or raise the dead, some were seen as prescient, and others were healers-it depends on the culture you look at. By the Middle Ages, magic was seen as having two distinct forms, although there was more of a focus on evil and sorcery (the daemonic form of magic) within the church, belief in natural magic by the people as a way to find healing and protection also remained. Casting coins into wishing wells, Patron Saints and many of our "superstitions" are hold overs from this time. The magic that remained acceptable to all but the most staunch Christians remained rooted in use of natural elements (In northern Europe, particularly in relation to water - wishing wells and healing powers). Additionally, many Christians of the common classes still practiced some “magical rituals” and the Church even placed its holidays near pagan holidays and rolled pagan practices into Church practices (to some extent) in order to help in converting the general populace. Tolkien’s wizards are in keeping with early Medieval and ancient tradition. They can read signs in nature-see and understand things that others can’t, make predictions, wield magical objects (staffs, rings, and Palantir), once in a while make something appear to have happened that is miraculous to everyone else (spells), and lead and “talk to nature”-communicate with moths and eagles and in Saruman’s case the corvids of Middle Earth. Ancient wizards were guides mostly and seen as the highly educated. Gandalf clearly fills that role, and does so with superb skill. He takes hints and clues, a suspicion grows and he heads to the library to confirm it. He is able to read signs of things to come, knows the right words to say (not just when it comes to spells but to ease fear and encourage, knows when not to say something. He is seen as a wise man and followed as one. If you read Arthurian legend from before the twentieth century, you will generally find Merlin to be no greater in his capabilities. They wield the magic of earth, but not necessarily for the purposes of entertainment or convenience the way the wizards and witches in say, Harry Potter, Disney’s Sword in the Stone and other more modern works depict. Likewise, Saruman is able to use his closeness to nature to affect the weather, but as he forgets his bond with nature, nature actually turns on him. Treebeard is that much more incensed by Saruman’s destruction because he is a wizard and should know better how to treat the nature around him. Radagast is the most perfect of Istari in regard to demonstrating closeness to and power in channeling nature for his benefit (though he is less perfect in demonstrating leadership over mankind and academic types of wisdom-leading to his failure). The “spell” Gandalf uses to break the bridge and prevent the Balrog from annihilating the entire fellowship by the way, is one of his least wizardlike moments in the series, when magic is looked at in this way (although I’d have to agree with previous posters it shows him to be pretty powerful with twentieth century thoughts on magic too). The ancients would have seen that moment as his requesting aid from the gods. The bridge-breaking would have been the doing of a god, not the doing of a wizard. Of course, since it is, in fact, fiction, Gandalf does have a few powers an ancient shaman wouldn’t have had as listed by others here.

Well written and thanks for posting your perspective and analysis. I agree and talk about this - a bit - in my magic in LotR video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/gZuMqtunppTIgZs.html Ofc some parts of it can be debated and I only scratch he surface - esp. on the connection of magic to "ancient tradition" and mythology. The essence is pretty close to what you say though. I really like some of the examples you mentioned (e.g. the wishing wells). I'll keep this in mind, thank you.

I am 66 years old and have read the books of Tolkien since the70s, I have never read anything that indicated that Saruman had any idea that Cirdan had ever told Saruman that Gandalf had one of the elven rings.

  • @ThePhilosophersGames

    @ThePhilosophersGames

    5 жыл бұрын

Then I probably worded it poorly or made a mistake. Círdan did not tell Saruman, but Saruman found out about Narya himself. At least according to the Unfinished Tales, The Istari: 'For' said he, 'great labours and perils lie before you, and lest your task prove too great and wearisome, take this Ring for your aid and comfort. It was entrusted to me only to keep secret, and here upon the West-shores it is idle; but I deem that in days ere long to come it should be in nobler hands than mine, that may wield it for the kindling of all hearts to courage.' And the Grey Messenger took the Ring, and kept it ever secret; yet the White Messenger (who was skilled to uncover all secrets) after a time became aware of this gift, and begrudged it, and it was the beginning of the hidden ill-will that he bore to the Grey, which afterwards became manifest.

The single thing I was most disappointed with in the movie adaptation was Gandalfs blind faith in Saruman... it makes him come off as somewhat naive. When the truth is by that point Gandalf had already perceived a change in Saruman and had begun to suspect that Saruman had warped the mission of the istari into something self-serving to further his own goals and power

Great example of Gandalf teaching "pity" as taught to him by Nienna Frodo: 'It's a pity Bilbo didn't kill Gollum when he had the chance.' Gandalf: 'Pity? It's a pity that stayed Bilbo's hand. Many that live deserve death. Some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them, Frodo? Do not be too eager to deal out death in judgment. Even the very wise cannot see all ends. My heart tells me that Gollum has some part to play in it, for good or evil, before this is over. The pity of Bilbo may rule the fate of many. And it turned out that it wasn't just the pity of Bilbo that kept Sauron from getting the Ring. It was the pity of Frodo and Sam as well, and on more than once occasion they wanted him dead but didn't kill him.

I knew Tolkien was smart but ... damn... Could one man really envision all of this while fighting for his life in a world war one trench? simple answer? Yes. Yes he could. One man CAN change the world. One man CAN create something that lasts. Something beyond what most of can imagine.

He didnt write it all or any of it really during ww1. I think the fall of gondolin is one of his earliest works from that time. He may have had ideas that later grew into the hobbit and lotr but if you know anything about middle earth you will know tolkien made many changes over the years. Lotr wasnt even the main story he wanted to tell, it grew from the hobbit. So i doubt gandalf or anything from the third age comes from the time. Of ww1

I don’t think Bilbo ever told Gandalf that he “stole” the Ring from Gollum. Rather, he seemed to take pains to justify his possession of it, feeling perhaps convicted by the claims of Gollum that he was a thief. Also, with regard to the theory that Gandalf thought Bilbo might have found Thror’s ring-when was the first time Gandalf actually saw the One Ring? Gandalf later told Frodo that each dwarf ring had its own gem. Did he discover that in his research of the Rings of Power AFTER Bilbo showed it to him on the night of the party? Was that the first time Gandalf had seen it? If so, then the sequence of events might indicate that Gandalf knew after his research that what Bilbo and Frodo had must be the One Ring, only excepting the final test of fire when he revealed the writing on the Ring.

Just for some clarification on magic in the world of Tolkien for those that are curious: It's a system based on the natural laws of creation in that world and the vows made by the elements and Illuvitar. Most of the most powerful beings command the elements / these laws to abide their will by speaking to it or by making an oath. According to the commanders understanding and station the elements would honor them. This power is a portion of the Secret Fire (God's power) which is in all things. The Istari had nearly free command of more of it, and some of the Eldar by birth into older ages of the world could do the same. "Magic/Sorcery" as we see in most fantasy worlds is a binding of the elements, trying to enchant/convince/force them to do ones will. So the result is not as full nor potent as an honored command of the same. Considering Tolkien's "magic" is directly connected to the Secret Fire and Illuvitar makes this power a power which creates Ea, or all that is. Magic as we have come to understand it is a system which imitate that order and fall short. One could also presume that dark magic / sorcery is brought about by the Shadow of Melkor having influenced the very fabric of Arda. (Possibly all of Ea) (I posted this on another you tubers video a while ago, but I felt it fit well here too.) Great video by the way. Keep up the amazing work!

Gandalf was not above Radagast when the Istari first came to Middle Earth, but he was least of those who came. Tolkien even writes, as Cirdan tells him, "He whom was least shall become greatest of the Order" which is one of the reasons Cirdan bestowed Narya upon him, realizing that while he may have been least he was wisest and his path will require specific aid...

  • @ThePhilosophersGames

Radagast was not planned to go to Middle-earth as Istari. Yavanna asked Saruman (the leader) to take Radagast with them and because it's Yavanna Saruman agreed, but was not happy about it. Gandalf was chosen in contrast and Varda said something about him not being the third, quote from Unfinished Tales, The Istari: Then Manwë said that that was all the more reason why he should go, and that he commanded Olórin (illegible words follow that seem to contain the word 'third'). But at that Varda looked up and said: 'Not as the third'; and Curumo remembered it. The note ends with the statement that Curumo [Saruman] took Aiwendil [Radagast] because Yavanna begged him, and that Alatar took Pallando as a friend. Also we find this statement in Unfinished Tales, The Istari: "Saruman is said (e.g. by Gandalf himself) to have been the chief of the Istari - that is, higher in Valinorean stature than the others. Gandalf was evidently the next in order. Radagast is presented as a person of much less power and wisdom. Of the other two nothing is said in published work save the reference to the Five Wizards in the altercation between Gandalf and Saruman [The Two Towers III 10]."

Thank you, happy you like the maps :) Yes I think the map helps a lot to understand even deeper what is going on there. I use it a lot (even though in a few cases my routes/movements of armies are not 100% correct and I just use the arrows as abstraction to get my point across; however I usually try to be accurate though). Using maps in my videos was also born out of the necessity to have something to show and me not getting permissions from artists to show their art work in my videos. So I went with showing maps ^^ haha yes that would be a possibility to hide the map :D

Yes, Gandalf once healed the Lord of the Eagles from an arrow wound according to the Hobbit. It's not clear who is meant. Thorondor (Lord of Eagles)? Gwaihir (Windlord)? Maybe Landroval (Gwaihir's brother)? Ofc Gandalf had brief contact with the eagles. Not sure how close their friendship was. quote from the Hobbit: "The wizard and the eagle-lord appeared to know one another slightly, and even to be on friendly terms." But that Gandalf was rescued by Gwaihir from Orthanc was an "accident", because Radagast send the Eagle. Quote from Lord of the Rings (Council of Elrond): For Radagast knew no reason why he should not do as I asked; and he rode away towards Mirkwood where he had many friends of old. And the Eagles of the Mountains went far and wide, and they saw many things: the gathering of wolves and the mustering of Orcs; and the Nine Riders going hither and thither in the lands; and they heard news of the escape of Gollum. And they sent a messenger to bring these tidings to me. ‘So it was that when summer waned, there came a night of moon, and Gwaihir the Windlord, swiftest of the Great Eagles, came unlooked-for to Orthanc; and he found me standing on the pinnacle.

Yes they are an interesting topic, but sadly we know so little about them. Interestingly they are not mentioned in the Hobbit book, but in the film and the only information we have is from books the film makers had no license for (Unfinished Tales and Peoples of Middle-earth). From The Lord of the Rings we only know that there 5 Wizards, and 3 of 5 are mentioned, but that the 2 missing Wizards are the Blue Wizards is not mentioned. I think he planned to publish his Istari essay including the Blue Wizards somewhere, but never did, it was then published after Tolkien's death by his son Christopher Tolkien - like many other notes and work in progress texts of J. R. R. Tolkien.

Wow!! Well you sound good in either case ! Tolkien has been a passion for me sinse I read the hobbit at about 9 . (now I am 48) The Sillmarillion was like a Bible to me,an in a sense the creation of Eru still inspires me far more than the Bible, and as a musician,it also makes more sense..odd you may think that. I have never met anyone with as much Knowlege of Tolkien than myself, until Your`s and another gentleman`s vid`s . Like for instance the correct pronunciation of "Meadros" Feanors eldest son...MYethROS..With the "th" as in "these clothes" and a hard R..as in "rock" Three syllables.,and all the various other Beasts, Ghosty goulies ,lol . Mainly I adhered to the appendices to pronounce every word as Tolkien put it forth for us to get right. After all his works were inspired by his love of language! Take care man,and good work on your video`s, they are terrific.

That really sounds quite interesting. I think, if you not consider the History of Middle-earth books (where Christopher Tolkien released and discussed the idea and notes of his father) and just focus on The Lord of the Rings and maybe the Unfinished Tales, this could be a potential conclusion. The mysterious Tom Bombadil is always a complex topic.

I have seen other lore videos claiming Tom Bombadill was one of the Maiar and long resident in Middle Earth. Also, the blue wizards are (when referred to at all) always stated to be active in the far east which contrasts with Tom Bombadill's residence close to the Shire in the west.

I don't mean to offend you in any way, I just prefer how pronunciation is done in the movies and other media. I understand why you do it the way you do I just think it doesn't flow properly when telling the story but again that's my opinion and as I'm told often my opinion on many things are a bit off. As I said I love your content and I know you put a lot of effort and time into your videos.
