Thrace (Modern Greek: Θράκη Thráki) or Thraike in Greek mythology, was the eponymous heroine and sorceress of Thrace. She was the daughter of Oceanus and Parthenope, and sister of Europa. The word Thrace, from ancient Greek Thrake (Θρᾴκη), referred originally to the Thracians (ancient Greek Thrakes Θρᾷκες), an ancient people inhabiting Southeast Europe. Ancient Greek mythology provides the Thracians with a mythical ancestor Thrax, the son of the war-god Ares, who was said to reside in Thrace. His attribute of "foreignness" as an arriving outsider-god may be inherent and essential to his cults, as he is a god of epiphany, sometimes called "the god who comes" One of the main instruments of Thrace is askaulos bagpipe askos+aulos bag+pipe "the bag of dionysus" today known as gaida and is made by goat skin, in the ancient ceremonies they sacrifice many goats/lambs thats why one of the epithet of dionysus is Aegobolus Αἰγοβόλος ("goat-shooter"), like christianity later they believe that the flesh (now bread) of the goat is the body of god and the wine is hιs blood, in ceremonies they use music to achieve ecstasy, one of the rituals that survived today is the Anastenaria people sacrifice a goat possesed by a spirit and dancing barefoot on fire, also in every spring in all over Greece in Easter to celebrate the ressurection of Christ/Dionysus is to cook and eating hundreds of goats/lambs. "In Orphic legend, Dionysus under the name Zagreus "hunter who catches living animals" was the son of Zeus by his daughter Persephone. I found one paper published in Nature-Scientific Reports from 2019: "Ancient human mitochondrial genomes from Bronze Age Bulgaria: new insights into the genetic history of Thracians." In the results on page 6 it is said: "Along the first component (sPC1) the ancient Thracians are closely related with Central-East European populations, while along the second component (sPC2) our samples show higher resemblance with present-day Mediterranean groups." And in the discussion on page 7: "In accordance with their geographical location, Thracians show a genetic composition clearly intermediate between East Europe and Mediterranean, that suggests multiple admixture events and population movements occurred across what is now the modern day Bulgaria. " So, the contribution of East and Central European genetic pools is given by the 1st principal component (which, by the way, explains most of the data variance). This is in a full accordance with the linguistic theory of Mario Alinei and Collin Renfrew that Thracians were proto-Balto-Slavic speakers.

You got me. I adore readings of the classical sources, what were their observations, thoughts, beliefs on their people and the people around them. It's telling that he compares the Thracians to the Indians, being as large as they were. Great work!

How was that a good job??? he has practically implied that the geto dacians did not exist north of Danube and they where less civilised than the rest of the thrchians.Yet all of the thrachians south of the Danube where conquered and enslaved by romans long before the dacian wars even begun.

Thracians and turks had to adopt slavic since romania and serbia were part pf the empire and had the biggest populations. Bulgaria is 6.5 million people, Romania is 19 mil. Serbia would be above 10 mil if not for ww1 Who is slavic you think ?

I am portuguese, from northen Portugal and did my DNA test 2 months ago. Tracians are my ancestors.

You definitely have some Balkan DNA. Unlike you local Balkan nations have way more Thracian DNA. I can tell you what my DNA test result showed. 11% Eastern slav genes/ coming somewhere from Ukranian Steps/, 2% Western Uralic Turk and 87% Easter Mediterranean genes a.k.a thracian genes. My home city is located 65km away from the capital city of the only historical thracian country called the Odryssian Kingdom, named Seutopolis so it makes sense.

Herodotus says that they weren’t united in polis city state so they are undeveloped Greeks used to be in city states except Thracians which they didn’t unite in polis so they stayed in barbaric culture compared to the rest of the Greeks

@@dikshachettri1037 Yes you may have today a lot of names today but back then when you had the connection from the Greek myths and history you were also a part of it Now what is happening is totally different to what was happening back then The Thracians used to be the barbaric part of Greeks with not any polis but the Thracian culture name gives the thriskia which is religion and all the mysteries to the Greek world Orpheus the Thracian was Greek and not from the moon as the Slavs can’t have ancestors from Macedonia but now they have the name because of geopolitical games

It is funny for people to try to say they are Thracian, at best you have blood that came from them but pretty much nothing else.

@@mihaiilie8808 I'm refering to people in Bulgaria that say they are Thracian and again your by logic can be aid for Dacia, you can have the blood and in certain regions more but nothing retains you to Dacian language or that much of the culture that we dont even what is from them rather is wishful thinking that some tradition is that ancient . Specifically for you there were Avars, Vlachs, Cumans, Mongols, Magyars and many other on the land and you want to keep memory of the oldest for some reason and the roman heritage because both sound nice. If we should have accepted that you have as people only some ancestry of both, you can be only one, you cant be Thracian/Dacian and in the same time Roman and claim heritage from Rome. Hell even your language was 60% slavic until 19th century when you decided that you will tone down the slavic words and made the alphabet Latin based just for that reason to be more with Rome.

@@vasil.kamdzhalov In Romania we never had slavic language, other than the church. Regular people that were illiterate always spoke romanian and romanian is dacian( thracian). Because sanscrit is romanian, long before the Roman Empire, the dacians spoke this vulgar latin wich is romanian and like sanscrit. Massagetae are getae wich means vlach or dacian or getae( 3 names for the same people). We have more thracian coulture in Romania than Bulgaria but Bulgaria has the land. These thracians got out from under the Black Sea when it was flooded. I am romanian and my haplogroup is like that of Varna chief( haplogroup T). Dacians stayed more pure, they preserved the original thracian coulture, while Bulgaria mixed a lot with massagetae, turks and greeks. Your own thracologists say that romanian is the ancient thracian, the proto indoeuropean and the mother of sanscrit( thus romanian is the mother of the latin, germanic and slavic and sanscrit). Budhist monk in India know more history about europe than europeans. They say they speak romanian and also the hindu. Just google,, why there are 80 million romanian speakers in India,,. Some of the slavic words you have are not slavic but thracian( the ones found in romanian also) but you got a lot of slavic from the massagetae.

@@mihaiilie8808 I will try to be friendly and try to read what you offered to google but there is so much crazy claims and reminds me of a lot of people that too much stay on Facebook or something and to those people best recommendation is to go outside for a bit and shake their heads from only the crazy articles because to look to crazy to take seriously. Sanskrit and all, connecting everything like this and people is insane is most cases and doesnt work when given proper documentation. The problem with anceint history is there are a lot of holes and people write whatever they like and say "Historians have proven".

Does this map show connections between Thracia and Morocco ( North Africa )? Because I'm looking for that connection... When I was there I found that their local language is very easy to read and understand from me(im bulgarian) and the letters are pronounced the same way, but their language is supposed to be at least 1000+ years older than mine (Cyrillic alphabet)???

The Thracians are one of the oldest European peoples. They were divided into many tribes, over 80 of which are known! Some of them are the Odris, the Getae, the Medes, the Bulgars, the Bessians, the Paeons, the Triballi, the Dardani, and many others! If they were united they would have been strong, but unfortunately they fought among themselves and their enemies took advantage of that.... The Thracians were the first people to work gold. The first processed gold in the world was processed and buried with its owner who was an unknown Thracian ruler who lived in the area of the city of Varna (Bulgaria). Other incredible and unparalleled treasures are the Valchitran and Panagyur treasures. A great Thracian ruler was Teres. The main genetic heirs of the Thracians are the Bulgarians, despite the lies that the Bulgarians were "Tatars" and other similar lies devoid of any logic, created to make the Bulgarians feel sorry. Yes, the Bulgarians are Slavs with Turkic mix. No, the Vlachs were not descendants of the Thracians but of the Romans - that is why they spoke and still speak a Romansh language . That is why we, Romanians speak a Romansh language . Thracian languages, are mostly unknown and the Thracians of the Balkans were long time Romanized before the arrival of the Slavs and the Bolgars . Part of the Vlachs were Slavicized, but most kept their Latin based language and most of them migrated to the north of Danube were they formed Romanians by mixing with other people living there . @@almeu433

At least all Thracian tribes living north of Jirecek line and south of Danube were Romanized . It is agreed that south of Jirecek line, they were under the Greek influence . Moesi , Getae , Illyrians of south of Danube, south of Pannonia were Romanized because there was a long Roman rule on those territory - since 2nd century BC. 2nd century BC is also when the Dacians appeared in history as mercenary Getae and other people occuping lands north of Carpthians . Bessi, according to Porphyrogenetus , were still bearing this name in the 8th century , because they lived isolated . But the region was heavily colonized with other citizens of the Empire , which strengthened the Roman/Latin element of the region . Same happened in Dacia , while many "natives" from the conquered territories were enrolled in the Roman army - specially for Dacians, they were massively exterminated and deported for their aggressive and treacherous behaviour . Roman/Latin element gave birth to Vlachs after the region was invaded and settled by Slavs and Bolgars . Vlachs declared themselves , in 12 century as being descendants of Roman colonists in the Balkans . Those Vlachs moved, continuously but in small quantities , north of Danube giving birth to Romanians - after they mixed with Slavs of north Danube . Of course other populations were caught in the mix everywhere - like descendants of al kind of Turkic migrators populations , Germanic, Celtic , Sarmatians.@@almeu433

Dna studies links Bulgarians with the oldest Neolitic populations that have existed on the Balkans like Pelasgians and Thracians. This is the truth. The rest are propaganda tales from our enemies. This is Bulgarian history. I don't understand what foreigners are doing here teaching Bulgarians their own history. Don't you understand how stupid is to come and tell the people who actually live in Thrace, that they have nothing to do with those lands? The Thracians were the best warriors, do you think they would allow others to take over. Nowhere is recorded a fight between Bulgarians and Thracians because they were the SAME people. Bulgarians had a parallel Scythian history but our origin is local. Stop believing German /Western propaganda. Getae and Goths are one and the same people. When Germans stole the Getae and Aryan history they invented new origin for the Bulgarians and the rest of Eastern Europe. Semitic/hamitic Ethiopians aka greeks became "cradle of European civilization". History is turned upside down. (Check "bulgar" on Encyclopedia Britannica, we have zero turkic/mongolian dna )

Very low quality too. When we were taken to visit the archaeological museum in Varna in Communist times the understanding was that there was this unknown and foreign people that lived in Varna before the Slavs. To me this is comic that Bulgarians come on line to say that they are Thracian and that with such an attitude.

Bulgarians have this false misconception that they come from the Ancient Thracians for some weird reason. I will not start guessing why they do that, but Bulgarians are 100% Slavs (It is proven in all serious academic levels), they come from North East Europe, they made a nice medieval empire, they had great kings and rich history and you should focus on that, but one thing is certain Bulgarians have nothing to do with Thracians.

@@dlteodorian Wow. You seem to know it all I am a Bulgarian who literally lives in Thrace. My DNA is predominantly Thracian and Slavic. So I am not a descendant of Thracians? What most of you try to avoid is the reality of Bulgarian nationality. Bulgarians are not a homogenous group of single origin. Our nation was created by the nomadic people from the steps and we carry their name. But they are merely a fraction of all people who lived and left their mark on us. We have Slavs, Thracians, Cuman, Vlach, Greek, Turk, and many other mixes in our blood. So who are you exactly to tell me I am not a descendant of those people?

Its the oposite, the tracians civilised the steppe people. You have the romanian getae( thracians) and then you have the massagetae that are steppe people, basically and literally, steppe romanians, that got tonspread romanian language in India. I recommend a youtube channel about Bulgarian history. It is by Pavel Serafimov. He has written books as well. He tells the real Thracian history, not the propaganda version we know.

So both modern Bulgarians and Greeks get most of their DNA from Thracians. As for Bulgarians being Slavs, this is just not true. yDNA/mDNA studies show that as far as genetics are concerned, we (as well as Macedonians) are significantly less Slavic than, for example, Hungarians (even though nobody considers them Slavs, lol).

Yup and Bulgaria is the least "Slav" country geneticwise, linguisticwise and culturally. Only 15-18 % slav genes are found in modern day Bulgaria. Put one Bulgarian among 10 dudes from Poland or Chechia and I can tell you which one is the Bulgarian fella.I worked and lived 3 years with Poles and I can tell you they look waaaaaay different than Bulgarians. Even culturally and linguistically we are way different. Bulgaria and Macedonia are the only countries where the language is analytical and not synthetic like the rest of Slav language. The researches of samples show that we have around 80 and evem over 80% some of us as the people here even before 8000 years ago, which is proving the researches of the different Ancient Chronics as well, even in Greece in big part the people living there have same DNA as the today Macedonians, big part of them, and Romanians with the Bulgarians. Thracians and Hellenics were very different and so are we and Southern Greeks. Those DNA tests compare your DNA to that of people from different regions, they don't analyse population genetics. Summary: it's a scam.

Modern day Bulgarians have the highest percent of native Balkan/Thracian DNA (49%) more than any other Balkan nation and + in Bulgaria there's alot of preserved Thracian traditions such as Kukeri, Martenitsa, Survakari, Nestinarstvo and others.

While it's true Thracians are not Greeks and their culture is their own, the Thracians are basically an extinct people. Also, genetic and archeological evidence points to Greeks (Mycenaeans) coming from Anatolia, likely descendants of the Sintashta culture. Keep in mind Greece is full of different tribes and did not become one people until after the classical age.

Bulgaria was a slavicized region before even the Bulgars came (they were not calling themselves Thracian anymore), in most of Romania the Slavs there were assimilated by the local population because there weren't as many as in the places that are today Slavic countries. Especially in Romania. Are you joking? The biggest thracian treasures were found in the valley of roses and thracian kings in Bulgaria. More than 50 of 80 thracian tribes lived in the contemporary borders of Bulgaria. Seutopolis - the capital of the only Thracian kingdom is located under Koprinka Dam again in Bulgaria. Thracian were all over the Balkans but modern day Bulgaria is the only country you can say Thracian tribes cover 100% of its territory, and Thracians lives only in Wallachia, which you know covers southern Romania only.

The Thracian language is proto Bulgarian and in the Balto Slavic language group, not latin. Romanian is vulgar latin and therefore has nothing to do with Thracian. Bulgarians and Thracians are the same people. We have always spoken Thracian, today in modern form and the bulgars in the Steppe were of Thracian origin, therefore spoke the same language. This slavic and turkic nonsense is just lies nobody in their right mind believes anymore. The Thracians spoke Bulgarian. Colin Renfrew, a respected archaeologists says that in his book "Archaeology and language" "No doubt they did indeed speak a Thracian language akin to that in what is now Bulgaria, whose origins were suggested earlier." @@docdoc7691 Serbs (Triballi) are Thracians. This is proven by many old historians and chroniclers. Also, genetics proves that Serbs are of Dinaric origin (haplogroups: I2a1, Q1a, E-V13). Bulgarians are not Thracians. Bulgarians are of Tatar origin (Proto- Bulgarians, Proto-Bulgari). Today's Bulgarians in western Bulgaria are Bulgarianized Serbs - Šopi (Triballi).

Eymolpos created the mysteries of Eleysina. They gave the rest of the Greeks Dionysus and Ares. They spoke Greek, competed in the Olympic Games (you had to prove your Greek bloodline in order to compete), had Greek names, eveything about them is Greek. They always took part in the biggest events of Greek history. Famous Greeks were from Thrace, as Thucydides, Diomidis, Dimokritos, Tegyrios, Poltis, Thamyris etc. It’s ridiculous, illogical, anti Hellenic and crazy to say that they weren’t Greeks. It’s like saying that Macedonians aren’t or the Pelopponesians. Everyone considered them part of the one and only Greek race. There is literally no proof that they weren’t Greeks. Only endless proof that they are and forever will be Greeks. In modern days for political and anti Hellenic reasons they are presented as non Greeks with no proof at all, only empty and unscientific words. No logic, out of reality. Bulgarians are occupying Greek land. The majority of Bulgarians are genetically Greeks but have lost their identity and are being brainwashed to believe they are Slavs. They portray Thracians as non Greeks for their own benefit. The etymology of the name “Thracians” is related to the name of one of the numerous tribes - the Travcians. Later the Greeks used “Thracians” to denote wild, uneducated, barbarian people. The Thracians built such an image of themselves because of the endless wars they waged among the different tribes and also with their neighbours. The Thracians were skillful warriors and for that reason they were highly sought after mercenaries. Homer provides the first written account of the Thracians in “The Iliad” where they are depicted as powerful soldiers fighting on the side of Troy. The ancient historian Herodot describes the Thracians as the most populous people along with the Indians and claims that if not for their constant fighting, the Thracians would be invincible when united. Here you can see greeks are NOT Thracians!
