I was born in Romania and my grandmother was Bulgarian. I will always consider Bulgarians as our brothers. We use to be one people, one country, one empire. Despite many changes in the teritory and that's most about Dobrogea, we don't have to be enemies. That is what the powerful countries wants us to be : divided and against each other. Peace brothers. It was actually very shallow interpretation mostly wikipedia stuff. It's as if a Bulgarian would be able to tell Greek or Romanian history better than a local. Good attenpt though. If Bulgarians weren't lazy we could make a very good video. This Mongols story is very misleading, but I'm bored to go into details.

For most part people on the Balkans weren't rebelling and tribes were living peacefully within the Ottoman Empire and many families had Janichars in their homes and it is interesting to mention that Janichary in many families was concidered a profession that offers a good status and especially between 16th and 18th century passed from father to son. Also it is interesting to note that during Ottoman time the Janichars were the strongest military unit of the Empire and when in the 18th century Ottomans stopped hiring man from Christian families as Janichars (due to some outside funded rebbels) the Empire began to loose control over the Balkans and many man around the Balkans saw this as betrayal of the Ottoman family and which resulted in the formation of hajduk groups and breaking the good relationship between Christians and Muslims. It is good to note that Romei villaet was ruled from Sofia and Bitola and that the Balkans was the richest and strongest villaet of the Ottoman Empire. Bulgarian genesis to this day carries 10% haplogroup J2 which is Anatolian, Iranian, South Caucasian and interestingly comes from haplogroup IJ and therefore it's second dominant is the Aryan genesis. This haplogenic group was of course enriched also by ancient Hellenic tribes and by Iranians who seems to have come to the Balkans during the Achaemenid Empire as well as from the time Bulgarians lived close to Armenians in the Caucasus region and was also influenced by the Kidar tribe of the Kidarites that lived with ancient Greeks and Iranians in Bactria and that along with some Yuedzhi formed the Utigur tribe that for a brief time was also living next to and ruled under Sandilch by the Gokturk Khaganate. History and culture of the region is very mixed and rich to which we should be proud. Thanks for enriching our culture komsolu, if Ottomans allowed more freedoms for the Balkans we could still be one empire. In all honesty I don't believe the Ottoman dinasty was enjoyed very much by Turks either. In fact Ataturk was greatly influenced by Bulgaria's European lifestyle from his time in Sofia as a military attache in the early 20th century and his was madly in love with general Stilian Kovachev's daughter - Dimitrina Kovacheva and unfortunatelly couldn't convince her father to give them permission to get married although they became friends with general Kovachev. Ataturk himself said, “I left my youth in Bulgaria." just 8 years after he returned from Bulgaria in 1923 he managed to overthrow the Ottomans and become the first president of Turkey. Ataturk was also very fonded by Bulgarians military culture and even have fought the Bulgarian army in the battle of Bulair where Bulgaria won with a 3 times smaller army to the amazement of Turkish leaders themself. Now that Turkey becomes a gas hub for Europe and we see that your relations with Syria and Iran are being restored we have plenty of good options to strnghten relations between the Balkans and Middle East especially since Serbia and Hungary might need new gas supplies (that is if Hungary and Russia don't have a new common border soon, although I hope there is some sense left in Ukraine and U.S. leaders and they start talks with Russia). I saw that our president visited Turkey in the beginning of December. Also a news has came that Bulgargaz is in advanced talks with Turkey's gas company Botas so we will benefit from cooperation in the energy field too. Also I heard Turkey is working on a new energy grid with Russia, Iran, Armenia and Azerbaidjan so good things are ahead of us.

Respect for Bulgaria and Bulgarians, from Romania! A country with a rich but turbulent historical past, at the confluence of empires and cultures, Bulgaria has endured and I am convinced it will have a future. Although we speak different languages and have different origins, I feel that in addition to having the same religion, we also have a very similar culture. A Romanian and a Bulgarian can collaborate very easily. I wish for the border between us to disappear and for us to build as many bridges over the Danube as possible. Maybe together we will manage to make the other peoples of the Balkans become friends and rise up, because all Balkans are essentially welcoming people.

Honestly unification between Bulgaria, Romania and Moldova is more likely to happen compared to our people that got brainwashed during Yugoslavia a.k.a. the ''Macedonians'' which are not even Macedonians to begin with it. No country can develop alone, real development can only be regional. Too many centuries have divided our empires! And speaking of Turks, although I am an Orthodox Christian, not a Muslim, I trust a Turk more than an Austrian! A Turk treats me as his equal, as I treat him, while an Austrian considers himself superior to me from the start, without knowing me. Not everyone is like that, but over 50% consider themselves to have blue blood.

@@adrianog4148 They have more in common with the Thracians than with the Turanian Bulgarians. See genetics. Bulgaria is Turanian in name only, they are a Thraco-Slavic mixture. The Turanians only gave the name of the country and the ruling elite, being few, disappeared over time and were assimilated by the Slavs.

Later, their students, after being ousted from Greater Moravia by the germanic, catholic, bishops, fled to Bulgaria and brought the script with them. Then, they created the cyrilic script in Preslav. Also, Omurtag and Krum were the first to begin the process of unification of the state - by creating the first written laws and one common administrative division of the country.

@Ž Š They were the most prominent and the ones that survived long enough to teach. The others died soon after they arrived in Bulgaria(or before. Gorazd died while on the way if i am not mistaken).

A note: the Cyrillic alphabet was not created by Cyril and Methodious. They created the glagolitic alphabet and when they fled to Bulgaria, Bulgaria welcomed them as scholars. A school was established by Bulgaria at those times, the Preslav school. There studied the 5 Bulgarian students that were Cyril and Methodious's puppets after they settled in Bulgaria. These 5 students created the Cyrillic alphabet and named it after their teacher Cyrill. In Bulgaria we honor them as Свети Седмочисленици[Sveti Sedmochislenitsi] meaning the holly seven.

Glad you liked it! Here things are indeed very calm and most of us can allow ourselves into lazy lifestyle which keeps us content throughout life because during socialism our construction forces, our fathers and grandfathers ❤️, built homes for everyone and most of us born in the 80s and 90s by the time we reach 30 already have at least 1-2 apartments inherited by our great grandparents. (May they rest in peace) France is not bad either if I had my own flat there I wouldn't mind living in for example Strasbourg as I love the mild weather and the small city vibe which reminds me of my village located in the Rose Valley of Europe - Kazanluk. The only thing I envy France about are the speed trains. What a wonderful addition the would be for us to have. Hope we get such in the next 2 decades for when I'll be in my late 40s. :)

There's no way to compare the wooden houses in Netherlands to the architecture of Panagyurishte and Koprivshtica. There is no way to compare French Reviera to our Nesebar. There is no way to compare Paris's architecture to our Nazi and USSR influenced architecture of Sofia. EU is very different and even inside the country there are differences all over the place.

I have visited Bulgaria many times, since I live close by in Thrace (Greece). I love the culture, the food, the landscapes. Everything is full of history. People are friendly and easy going! Velico Tarnovo is a must to visit. So is Sofia, Plovdiv, the cities at the coast of the Black Sea (Burgas, Varna). I personally love the mountains and places like Smolian in the south.

Eastern Thrace was historically a Bulgarian land, populated by Bulgarian Slavs. Today’s Bulgaria should have an access to Aegean Sea to at least one big port. The area from Xanthi to the port Dedeagach should belong to Bulgaria.

You should know that the Bulgarian culture and history is deliberately hidden, they don't want to know the origin of human civilization. The Bulgarians, called Thracians, as well as the Huns, created the first country and culture on Earth, the oldest processed gold is Bulgarian, the oldest calendar is also older than the Chinese one. I have visited the capital Sofia and Varna along with Kranevo, Albena (I believe thats what it was called), as well as I have travelled a little through the inland. Bulgaria left a lot of great memories. It was very welcoming country and I had the best time trying some of their local honey. Years later I met a bulgarian guy in the US. He was surprised that I have visited his country but since his english was not very good, I had to speak to him in Russian and English at the same time and we managed to understand each other and had a great time. Great video, thank you.

0:50 the oldest known gold treasure in Europe is found in Varna, 15:07 Kaloyan was nicknamed "roman slayer" after the siege of Varna in 1201 when he ordered the greek garrison be thrown in the ditch in front of the city walls and buried alive and in 1444 a the decisive battle of a crusade happened near Varna. Some background to this. Kaloyan was a hostage in cobsyantinopke during his youth. He likely did not have much fond memories su.ilatly like vlad the impaler despised the ottomans as he was a hostage there when he was young.

All of Balkans have by now already moved to Germany, so it must feel pretty lonely out there lol Balkans demographics is fascinating to say the least with young people fleeing and only elderly left in place this is an economic implosion in the making, but well, let's see what future has to offer. I'm from Romania but every time when I went in Bulgaria I felt like home, not only the places , but people are the same, like us. Even if I didn't go in Serbia, I believe Serbia is the same and in my opinion, we are all brothers. I felt closer from Bulgarian people than Italian. If I didn't mistake, we share the share name of one city, Targoviste. PS during the Russian Ottoman war ,a very big contribution to freedom of Bulgaria had Romanian Army and history mentioned that without help of Romanian Army , the war would have been lost from Russia.

Same here, bro. Търговия or Targovia means trade and Targovishte is like a trade place, derived from the former Ottoman name of Eski Dzhumaya, which is the Friday market. Other similar names include Slatina meaning salt source or mineral spring (from Slavic). After all, we used to be one country many centuries ago....

@@kosmicheskiprah Please forgive me if I tell you, I don't much about Bulgarian history, but I know our rulers passed many times (Vlad the Impaler, or Mircea the Elder) Danube, in Bulgaria, fought with Turks, Tatars, or other enemies. And releasing land from them. I regret I never was in the middle of Bulgarian culture, I stayed only at hotel, but I heard our food is similar, we share same kind of food, ex. sarmale :) I believe we share many others and of course we shared the same land in the past that we make us brothers. I'm glad to know you! PS when I was child I saw The Independence of Romania movie and in that movie are presented the battles of Plevna or Grivita. Please do not laugh but for me those places were in Romania until I found out they are not. :)

@@DimoDim1914 the romanian language reform was not so big as you guys imagine. We just adopted the latin alphabet because it suited better our language since our language is of latin origin. But because we were part of the Bulgarian Empire we got the church organisation from the Bulgarian Empire and we used slovnic language and cylliric alphabet in church, although we were christians before we were part of the Bulgarian Empires, since most of the basic christian words of romanian like church, cross, God etc. is of latin origin. The other more complex words are from slavonic language because we were christians but we had not a good christian church structure before we were part of the Bulgarian Empires. We had just basic christian words of latin origin. However, in the west, the catholic church used latin language in the church and all the western powers of german origin used the latin language in international level. In the eastern word, the eastern countries used slavic language in the church and in the international level. These were the 2 international languages like today is enlgish. Because of this, our language of latin origin was influenced by slavic language, but it is the same as the german language is influence by latin language. Its not such a big thing since we cannot even build a sentence in slavic language because all important and basic words are of latin origin. Its like todays bulgarian language use latin words form english,french,italian like President, , Parlament etc. but you cannot build a sentence in latin language. The same is with us, we have some old slavic words but we cannot build even 1 sentence with words that origin from slavic language and we dont understand bulgarian or serbian language. The language reform of our language only meant the latin alphabet and some latin words that fited better to our language than some remained slavic words that were sounding not right in our language. For example the today romanians can read a document from 16th century and still understand what it was writen, because the language is mostly the same. Only a few slavic words that were not so important were changed for latin words because it didnt fited to the language.

I came to Bulgaria nearly 17 years ago, I have never left, not even for a holiday, in fact I rarely leave my little Balkan village. I guess you could say I am a 'Born Again Bulgarian.' Thanks for that concise stroll through the complex history of this wonderful country.

We came to Bulgaria and found that every day is an adventure in this country! I speak, read and write Bulgarian and work in the local shop and bar but I have never considered myself fluent in the language, I still get stumped and have to go scrambling for my dictionary.

@@georgitetimov4910 If you don't mind, I would rather not say the name of the village online but it is about 35 kilometres north of Shumen, very hilly and forested. When we first moved here it wasn't on most maps and has no tarmac/asphalt roads, just dust and gravel and side streets of grass.

I visit Bulgaria alot as my grandfather is Bulgarian, I just REALLY fucking love the yogurt, I'm not just popularizing and adopting popular stuff, it's salty, yet cold and fluffy, with a mix of berry jam, it's heaven, I've honestly never enjoyed my visit to a nation so much, I've even nearly bought a massive statue of stalin, a T 55 tank Shell, and multiple 1885 sabres, and I do mean actual historical ones, from a house of a Romani person. I love the antion my heritage comes from, and I've honestly much enjoyed your video.

@@cruelty5780 no. Bulgars were an Asiatic turkic tribe. The Bulgarians adopted their name after the Bulgar rulers wre either assimilated or driven out by slavs.

I visited Bulgaria to play at the Koprivshtista Festival in 2015. It exists to preserve the Bulgarian cultural heritage. I would recommend anyone interest to attend. Shopska Salat and Bop are tasty and healthy dishes.

It really is amaizing that the Ottomans was holding this part of europe for 500 years. I came here after watching Ottomans the rice of empires on Netflix. Got interested in eastern european history. Greetings from Sweden.

Great video. Interesting and informative. We love Bulgaria and have been two times with plans to return for another 3 months this year. Personally I love the Tarator Soup but also the delicious meats and cheeses. Also, you can't go wrong with Bulgarian wine! We loved Veliko Tarnovo the most, and we have also really fallen for Varna.

Great overwiew. It brushed up on my knowledge, added a lot of events and gave me interest in comparing the conversion of Boris I with Harald Bluetooth. For dinner I would have chopped salad with 60% Bulgarian feta and 20 year old plum Rakia, followed by the local meet and red wine.

After so much fighting I'm glad that us (Bulgarians) and our neighbours finally have a good relationship and the only thing we hit is our glasses. Nazdrave, and may next year be a better one for your country and family!

Well, we actually have good relations with half of our neighbours - Romania and Greece. There is too much communist anti-bulgarian propaganda and hate speech in Serbia and North Macedonia ("thank you" Russia).

Awesome video! I'm amazed at how far back you went in history. My favorite BG food is called Tarator (cucumber yogurt soup with dill and garlic).

Just learned a fellow coworker was Bulgarian. I told him I'd learn some more about his country. He was surprised about what I already knew; though little. This video has helped. So many major world powers occupied this land. Also, they have and now do, have they're own land. It's interesting. I didn't know how much about the area of Bulgaria that I already knew. In primordial row it goes like this . Bulgar Oghurs - Tengrist have made invasion to Official Roman Province Macedonia in which were incorporated: theritory of old Kingdom Makedon , Epir ,Thesalia and parts of Trace ,Iliricum and Peonia .....! Read it please! It was Extended Onogurian Bulgaria from Volga river therritory . With invasion to the Roman territories by Oghur Turkic tribes but inhabitant were all Tracean and Macedonian . It is The Great honour that they are not keeping that Onogurian name Bulgar but they are new modern Bulgaria . Reasonably shortened ! Once it was Bulgarian quasi empire on Three Seas , but it lost territories due to Otoman invasion ! Easy comes , easy goes my dear !

Hello and greetings from Bulgaria. This clip puts a smile on my face, when i saw my own country in one of your clips. I'm a huge fan of the channel. It thought me a lot about world history. One point though - Cyril and Metodius created the Glagolic alphabet for other Slavic tribes, while their pupils were accepted (or taken) by Boris the First and created the Cirylic alphabet. As for Todor Zhivkov. Well... Its a very difficult subject and a grey area. Some people here adore him and think he is the best thing that happened to Bulgaria. Other people hate him to the core, because they believe that him and communism as a whole was the worst period for Bulgaria. This man is controversial mildly said. He came from a poor family, had humble origins and was not well edicated, but with wits and streetwise mentality namaged to climb through the ranks of the Party. Back then, the working class people liked him, because he was one of their own. He was close to Brezhnev, which lead to taking of loans from the Soviets, because our own economy was begining to fail. Something, which stopped when Gorbachev came to power. Zhivkov considered leaving the Warsaw pact at some point, at other considered joining the USSR, which is widely believed to be a state treason. At the end he was forcebly removed from office in front of the whole country. Personally, I don't like him. I consider him a dumb peasant, а sly, double-faced hypocrite, who used his power to his own interest and to some extent for the Party, not in the best interest of the people or the country. Bulgaria had several bancrupcies during his rule. But you could also imply, that through this period, Bulgaria had a somewhat calm and balanced state of existence between the first rough and violence years of communism after World War 2 and the chaotic, mobster years of the 90-s.

the only calm and peace bulgarians experienced during communism was only for those that kept their head down and didn't cause trouble. Essentially, rats and insects. Communism effectively castrated the bulgarian people in 45 years, meanwhile 500 years of ottoman slavery (which is considered way worse) couldn't manage to do that.

Thanks for creating this. I really enjoy seeing videos like this, that show the world some more about our country. Also you did a really good job at representing everything that has happened around here, so once again good job for that!

I moved back to Bulgaria after living 90% of my life somewhere else and I was also in other countries and cities around the world but, there’s no place like Bulgaria. It’s rough but real and people are real. Life is real here. Nature is stunning and the culture is worth experiencing. You can do what ever you want in Bulgaria, specially if you have money or connections. I‘m proud being Bulgarian and having this history which goes much deeper than this video but, I appreciate every detail of what you did and show the people. I really hope my people can finally prosper now after so many years of war and change. We kind of never got out of this feeling here in Bulgaria, my people are hurt and still suffer from generations of loosing families. Still, I wish everyone around the world to live together in peace now! We can finally achieve what our grandparents all died for.

As an Armenian, I love Bulgaria. They saved many Armenians during the Turkish genocide and currently, the Armenians are one of the best integrated societies, mixed marriages are common as well. Excellent video and greetings to my fellow Bulgarians.

My favorite place to visit in Bulgaria is Rila Monastery. The frescos are amazing. They are exposed to the climate, yet they maintain so much color. It’s really remarkable.

@@petertodorov1792 Because according to the EU rules they produce too much nitrogen, so they need to cut down like half of their livestock which many financially won't survive. But there has been many protests by the farmers (blocking roads etc.) and a lot of people sympathize with the farmers. It's a fuckedup situation. But the government is now negotiating with them.

@@024NimmaYour government has its good reason to behave as it does. Rule of law is still more of a theoretical concept than an fact of daily life around here, I for one have no issue with their reluctance to have Bulgaria admitted to Schengen..

I'm Bulgarian and I can't help but congratulate you on the video that you've made, well done! However, the last couple of minutes concerning the communist/socialist period contain some inaccuracies. That was the single most devastating period of Bulgarian history when the state went bankrupt a couple of times and the entire intelligentsia was absolutely annihilated. As a Bulgarian, thank you for making this amazing video video on our country's long history! 🇧🇬❤ As for the questions at the end of the video: I'd recommend the Shopska salad, the traditional Bulgarian cuisine and our wines. Among the places one should visit are our major cities and the Black sea coast, the winter resorts, the Danube river and many others. As for Zhivkov - he's a complicated figure, as the Communist period was peaceful for most people, though a lot of people were oppressed for political reasons and our external policy was under the control of the Soviets.

I visited Bulgaria in March of 1989. Not much food around, but the buses were free, and downtown Sofia was amazing. No cars allowed in the downtown core! Unfortunately I couldn't stay, but the first night there I attended a concert of singing and dancing, which, partially due to the fact I'd had little sleep for the last 36 hours, rendered me to tears. The next night I again attended another concert. The lovely lady who ran the pension where I stayed quickly dispossessed me of some cheap jewelry I'd picked up in Togo. If you haven't listened to the Bulgarian State Radio and Television Female choir, you're seriously missing out...

Your videos are very unique. The combination of your level of detail to very esoteric information, and whispery type voice narration is hypnotic. Beautiful. The illustrations are awesome and I really think they'd be great for a totalwar like video game.

Bulgaria is a country with a very rich history and proud people. I have been in the country for enjoyable and wonderful 6 years for my study in one of the historic city Plovdiv in 1980s. If you ask me where would I like to go again or recommend to some one to go and visit, l would advise first go to Plovdiv and visit the Old City (Staria Grad) then go to Pamporovo, Varna, Burgas, all the Black Sea Resorts and conclude your visit by visiting Vitosha and the historic Orthodox Church in Sofia.

The history of previous Bulgarias is also impressive. But not very well known. Many nations trying to counterfeit history by political reasons. They represent bulgarians like tatars, turkic tribes.. In fact they were often part of hunes, avars (military support).. and so on. Search about bulgarian calendar. Maybe this not very popular facts will make you doubt in popular versions.

Because of its geographic location, Bulgaria and the Balkans in general have seen the worst of incessant warfare over the past 3 millennium. The region is kind of a bottleneck or wide isthmus between major powers encroaching from all directions.

With the ritual procession, the masked men chase away "unclean forces" that come from the world of the dead and can harm a person. - Sirni Zagovezki (Forgivness/ Pokladi) An important winter-spring holiday in the folk calendar. It is celebrated seven weeks before Easter. Tradition dictates that on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays swings are tied and the young men and women swing on them for health. Huge bonfires are lit on Sundays, and after they burn out, they are jumped over again for health. Then people dance around them and sing songs. - St. Jordan's Day On the 6th of January, tradition dictates that after the ritual baptism of frozen water, the priest throws a cross into the river, where the assembled men dive in to retrieve it. The one who took out the cross will be healthy and happy throughout the year.

Great explanation 👌, I can only add in must to visit - the Krushuna Falls and the Rhodopes ,land of Orpheus.

Hohoo - glad you asked about drinks and food! (Btw great video summarizing our great History. I only wish some of our old fiefdoms were LEFT and not just a small speck on the map) For alcohol - Bulgarian "Rakia" is definitely one not to miss. There are many kinds & variations. It is usually made out of Grapes. A strong drink that has its own Festival in Sofia every year, where different vendors come together and present their beverages, to win an award & get recognition nation wide. As far as i can remember myself, i always see people drink Rakia :) (Be careful though! As easily as it goes in, it can be a real bad hangover champion the next day. Drink in moderation) Wine - Red wine, flavor: Mavrud, Red Misket, Melnik, Rubin, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Merlot & others. Most of the wine made in the Thrakian lowlands is truly very tasty & well made, with traditions going waaaay back. When monks were making them in the cellars & etc. Food is something that we can all debate for long periods of time. We offer a great many tasty foods. Most not healthy. (But really tasty) Foods made here in Bulgaria uses a lot of animal products such as: Eggs, Cheese, Milk, Yogurt, various Meats & etc. One particularly interesting one is: "Shkembe chorba" - it is a soup made out of beef belly, spices & milk. Boiled and made in a specific way, traditional to Bulgaria. It is usually eaten with Spicy Peppers or Spicy Pepper dust. Goes well with bread. Garlic bread & black pepper and salt to taste. If done well & properly, a true delicacy. Another one i can name is "Tarator" - again, a soup made out of Yogurt, water, pickles, herbs and spices. Very refreshing for the hot summer days. "Musaka" - is made out of ground meat, potatoes all finely chopped, with spices and vegetables. Most people top it off with a egg mixture at the very end, for extra texture & taste. Quite a tasty traditional dish. Salad: "Shopska salata" - a salad with different ingredients that at first glance do not go well together, but when mixed up well and properly spiced, really tasty. Desert: "Baklava" - a desert made with Syrup (Sugar) & crushed Walnuts. It has fillings of bread and is very sweet, but also really tasty. Breakfast: "Banitsa or Banitsza" - is made with flour, eggs, cow cheese, butter & baked in an oven - really tasty, even by itself. It goes well with "Bozza" or "Airian" - both are local non alcoholic drinks. "Katuk" - is crushed cheese, with yogurt & salt added to flavor of the person consuming it. Recently i use a squeeze of Lemon to it, as well as: "Sharena Sol" or "Patterned Salt" that has various herbs inside it. Its a really tasty little dish that you can make only with Good & high quality Yogurt. I might be wrong about some of the foods mentioned above, being "Traditional" - we have influences of other cultures in ours, so much so that sometimes things become blurred. At the very least the above foods & drinks are something you see quite often here in Bulgaria. You can usually find great food in local restaurants & taverns, hotels that serve various types of traditional food. But one thing is common everywhere. Tasty food! We are proud of our beautiful Mountains, rivers, pastures & women. A truly beautiful country. However we are plagued by bad politicians, greed & corruption. If all of that were "Fixed", it`d be an amazing country to live in. Hope you found the above useful, cheers! Be well and stay healthy.

"Shkembe chorba"- lamb or beef belly is used for this soup - not pork, never pork! And in fact, the most common mistake that even we make is that we call our sour milk - yogurt.The two are different products! But in the end Yogurt sounds better... Katak, Tarator, Shopska salad are traditional Bulgarian dishes, also Pepper burek, banitsa. Bulgarian white cheese has no equal! The kitchen of our neighbors is also very good - Baklava, Düner, Pleskavitsa, Ustiptsi, and many others...

@@nikolaydimitrov6121 Did that law apply to all realms, though? If I remember correctly this was specifically applied in the eastern Roman empire. Of course, a blind king or eunuch would naturally not be desired in any monarchy, but I'm talking here about there being a specific law about that.

@@MegaGamermaniaco Probably the practice came from ERE, but there actually was a Bulgarian Tsar who was a eunuch, Roman (977-997). The Byzantines were especially amazed to how that was possible, so I would guess that the traditions varied from country to country.

Helo! I am Bulgarian living in Sweden since meny years. I was in my 20 when I imigrated from the country. The Bulgarian communist regime was totaly obidient to the Soviet Union. Zivkov was pupet on the strings to the soviet leaders. He and his family was like a tribe that exploited the people. Sadly has Bulgaria after the communists falldown had only incompetent and corupted polititians. However the country has beautifull scinery from the mountains their the plains to the see.The food is marvelous the wines and the rakia are very good. I am Bulgarian who deeply love the history of the world, and my own. This is the first correct video or anything really on the internet out side of Bulgaria, that explains our history. Thank you sir.

Not so well known fact: Cyril and Methodius didn't invent cyrillic. They invented glagolitic. Their students were the ones whose script is being used today (or a modernized version of it), and they called it after their teacher.

I've been interested in Bulgaria for a few years now, so thank you. I can't wait to visit someday! By the way, there is a beautiful song by Deep Forest called Bulgarian Melody that I have enjoyed for many years. It's a lovely song I recommend.

Bulgarian here! Thanks for covering our history :) We do have some interesting political history after Zhivkov, especially the past 2 years so that would be a great part 2 :D

Sofia and Kazanlak are my favorite spots. Rikia, by far, is my favorite drink. Koprinca, karlovo, turnovo, and shipka are beautiful and full of history.

Fun fact: the name Varna actually comes from the Persian word "vár-nāw", meaning "by the sea" or "coast". With that said note that this word is almost totally out of use in standard modern day Persian, but is still in use in some regional Iranian languages related to/derived from Persian.

As a Bulgarian who lived under Todor Zhivkov as a kid, I can say that it wasn't that bad in the early 80's, but then by the 88-89 it got bad, because the economic support of USSR was cancelled in Gorbachov's Perestroika. Zhivkov was kind a "liberal" for a communist dictator compared to others.

As a Bulgarian I can sum up the communist period as such 1. The "Stalin era" was horrible with purges and killings. For example my great grandpa just got called to the police station one day then shot put somewhere. Or his family who were denied work and who the regime tried to kill by starvation. There was economic growth during that period though largely due to the inhumane 15-20 hour work days and slave labor. 2. The Zhivkov period eased up. The population was then controlled not by fear but by bribes. Basically Stalin had stolen all the land and businesses before and when his people got overthrown in an internal coup the new local communists just started building factories for whatever without any economic consideration and then just let the people who "worked" there steal in mass. The whole thing was financed by government debt and the money made from tourism and agriculture. When the money ran out the regime fell and everything went bankrupt so 70 years gone to waste and we had to start over. We are also still paying that debt and the people from THAT period are greedy, selfish and corrupt. 3. All the institutions and foundations built over the course of several hundred years like the military, church, landowning class, business class, intellectual class (painters, writers,etc), merchants etc were killed and our mini cultural golden age ended. The value system went to shit and people stopped believing in anything besides nationalism and greed.

Sоrоs helped a lot and did financial manipulations that managed to kick Zhan Videnov out of the game and bankrupt the country, but it was already a lost game after Gоrbachov solt out the USSR to from an oligarchic capitalist Russia and Masonary was re-introduced after it was forbid between 1950-1990 The 90s were very similar to the early 50s that the above comment described only difference was that the factories that were build from our grandparents to fuel our economy, were intentionally bankrupted and sold to scrap to benefit other economies. Then the 00s were the exact same as the late 50s with only difference that power was given through bribes to current "political powers" who are mainly lap dogs and drug lords that serve the interest of other countries. Just this time business was not stolen in the interest of the nation, but was stolen from middle class bussinessman so it can be given in the hands of EU puppets and on a side note hundreds of thousands of young people were given a sentence for marijuana possesion so a major part of young independant thinkers could be restricted from entering politics. Times change, lessons are learned unfortunately on the backs of millions of innocent middle class (and newly formed after fall of Socialism - poor class) people. If I had the chance to add something to the mistakes of Zhivkov was the Bulgarization of Turks. A really barbaric act although most of today's Bulgarian Turks have forgiven him. Otherwise he was a very inspirational figure for almost 80%+ of the population born between 1920-1970 and perceived as a simple man with a great impact that took us into top 30 econimies of the world. Unfortunately today we're out of the top 60, but his and the example of our parents, grandparents, greatgrandparents of all ethnicities and religions shows that if a nation works as one unit it can accomplish great things and serve as an example for the world. Every rege at one point comes to an end. Hope in the next one we will have a higher common goal as a nation. Today most of us live very good life, but one thing troubles me... We're too individual and self-centered which is the reason we have so many rich, but also so many poor and homeless. One nation is as rich as it's poorest thus we are poor... Not as poor as the US and Russia, but still poor.

@@ia3078 I have to agree with some points and disagree with others. The factories were never built with economic growth in mind to begin with and by the mid 90s were already drowning in debt. They were always going to go bankrupt. Very few managed to reform enough. The only actual industries that were turning a profit were tourism, farming and some mining. The 90s and 00s were very different from the 50s though. In the 50s we are literally talking about the murder of at least 100 000 people. Basically the entire leadership of the country on a national and local level was removed. The military officers, the royal family, the political elite, the intellectuals (writers, journalists, academics, actors ,directors, composers, musicians ) , the local police chiefs, mayors, clergy and administrators etc. In a dictatorship with limited information the best informed and connected people are the intelligence agents (ДС) and those are the people that took power and made the most of it. They rule to this day but because the regime ended I don`t think there is anybody new coming down the pipeline. Boiko (Gerb), BSP and DPS are all former government agents and all of them are old. I can`t say I`m the biggest fan of the EU but as long as it`s exists we are better off. We are not strong enough as a country to face the world alone right now. We need a benefactor and apart from the EU our options are Russia (a country in demographic, economic and overall meltdown) and Turkey. A country that is currently fighting in their neighbors (Syria, Iraq) has occupied a third (Cyprus) and is threatening war with a forth (Greece). Not exactly ideal.
