Who are the Mormons?

Who are the Mormons? A quirky group that certainly stands out among modern Americans for many of their unorthodox practices, beliefs and demographic traits, which distinguishes them from mainstream Christians and pretty much every other religious group.
Be sure to let me know your thoughts on the most confounding, yet lovable religious/cultural groups in the world today. Thanks for watching!

I love your videos and have been looking forward to this one. I am lifelong Mormon, went on a two year mission to Korea, studied at BYU in Utah, and married another Mormon in one of our temples. This was extremely fair and mostly accurate. The stuff you got wrong was less to do about culture and more about doctrine. For example, Mormons can drink caffeine (I have all my life), but there is a historical cultural bias against doing so (unlike alcohol which is forbidden theologically). At this point, the cultural norm has largely changed and I would say most Mormons dont care about avoiding caffeine (BYU has recently started serving caffeinated beverages in its cafeteria). Oh, and I would say that we are Christians, but it would be fair to argue that we are unorthodox heretical Christians with a strong distinctive cultural vibe that can come off as cult-like if you grew up outside of the culture.

A knock on the door. Tony: Hey, Chad. What are you doing here? How is my sister? Chad: We've separated. Since you're my brother-in-law, I wanted to tell you in person. Tony: Gosh, I'm sorry to hear that. My sister never told me. You must be really upset. Chad: Yeah, I really need someone to talk with. She threw me out. They both sit down on the couch. Tony: So, gees, if you need a place to stay, you can stay with me for a few days. Chad: I was hoping that you would say that. Chad starts rubbing Tony's thigh. Clothes come off before the next shot. Oral sex starts and Chad starts fingering Tony's ass. Soon, anal sex is happening. Tony is grunting like a pig in heat. After the sex: Tony: I'm really sorry that you broke up with my sister, but I will always be here for you. Chad: I was hoping that you would say that. French kissing ensues. Fade out.

Saturn_Devouring, I’m no longer orthodox Christian but saying “Mormons are Christian because Jesus Christ is in our name” is kind of like saying the “Washington Redskins are native Americans because it’s in their name.” I don’t mean to insult your analytical thinking but that’s really not a logical premise. Mormons may or may not be Christians (depending on how one defines that term) but in either case it would not be contingent on the formal name. Hope it’s ok to say this.

Saturn_Devouring, yep, that should do it. But you may not be what Christians call Trinitarian, which means that the Father, Son and Holy Spirit are one , but also three. Hard to explain, but I think Mormons believe Jesus was the Son of God but that he was not equal to, or one in the same god being. That is, the belief that Jesus is God. If you’re familiar with Unitarians, that’s where their very old religious group gets its name. They don’t believe that Jesus was necessarily divine (Trinitarian) but rather was a holy teacher and guide. Hence Unitarians are not considered Christian, and never wanted to be called Christian in theology and doctrine. Many of our founders were Unitarians.

Hey Mason, here's a group that might fascinate you as much as it does me: The Church of the East, sometimes called Nestorian Christians. There was a schism between them and European Christians after the council of Ephesus (431). Headquartered in Iraq for most of its life, it spread to India and China, at one point, outnumbering the European Christians. They were an integral part of the Mongolian Empire. But the Black Plague and various persecutions throughout the years dwindled their numbers. Now there are less than 400,000 and they are headquartered in Chicago, IL,, of all places, but span all over the world. An incredible group. Seems right up your alley. Would love to hear a full Masaman analysis of them. Great job as always!

I can imagine it's different in America because of all the comments saying people who leave the church get disowned or commit suicide. None of that happens where I live, a friend's child left and he hasn't been disowned nor even thought about committing suicide. Is Mormonism more pressurised or something with the majority of the Utah area being members of the church. It's the minority where I live.

There are a lot of rabbit holes people tend to go down when talking about Mormons, but you did a great job avoiding that and giving the important broad strokes that make us different from other religious groups. As I’ve studied other religions, I’ve become increasingly aware of how much my Mormon upbringing has and will always affect my values and personality in a way that most other Christians haven’t experienced in their specific denominations, so I agree with you that it’s fair to argue that we are an ethno-religious group.

Thanks for the video. I appreciated the history. A few corrections. The whole video was on The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but you have FLDS members on the cover picture. Furthermore, missionaries were sent to many different people early on. One of the first missions was to Native Americans. However they had most of their success with fellow American and Western Europeans and so focused their efforts on them. Following WWII, with improved travel and language learning, the Church finally started to be more successful with non-European people. The Church had so much success in England early on that for over a decade there were more members in England than America. This changed after most of them emigrated to the US. Good work. Keep it up.

I enjoy your channel very much. You are very good, but your sound quality across your catalog of work is in need of study and attenuation. I notice panning where you probably did not mean to have any -dialogue, in this manner, set to the center as mono is a must -I also notice you have dynamic difference between clips of your voice - some will be quiet and then suddenly loud! Depending on your editing tools this can be rectified through normalization, compressors, limiters. Sometimes you have clipping audio - good to watch out for that too. I only bring this up because arguably more than half of your product is your voice narrating your research, presenting to us all. You have great photos and maps, graphs etc, and your editing there is great. I think simply by bouncing out your recorded audio into a summed mono file, and keeping an eye on the leveling, your videos would rise to a whole new level. All the best, be well, Culain

Good presentation, just a few notes. Since the LDS founded Nauvoo, Joseph Smith was the person who came up with the name, it isn't so much that he took control, then founded it. Also, early missions to Hawaii, New Zealand, and other pacific islands were happening at the same time as those to northern Europe. The first Native American LDS Bishop was ordained in the 1860s, the first Mauri Bishop was in 1870s, and Tonga in the 1890s. So those groups are far older than described.

While I don't subscribe to their beliefs, my respect for the LDS church definitely grew after our conversation. He was very honest and didn't hide anything. Even though I never prompted him or asked him about it, he openly told me that, like any religion, there are those who converted to the Mormon faith who do not follow its doctrines. He said that, like any other community, Provo's Mormon community has its share of drug users, alcoholics, and criminals. Maybe other branches of religions do this as well, but I've yet to run into one where a spokesperson was this straightforward and honest.

Christian Holmstedt The LDS church does not use the Nicene creed as the fundamental statement of their beliefs. Almost all other denominations calling themselves “Christian” do, so the LDS church, and I believe also the Jehova’s Witnesses, are the main exceptions. I would phrase that as being “non-Nicene”, not necessarily “anti-Nicene”. The question is: what definition do we use for “Christian”? Make it sufficiently loose and you may have to include Muslims because they have certain beliefs about Jesus as well, but they do not consider him divine, because God is indivisible (Tawhid). Why any of this is relevant for vetting a presidential candidate is beyond me.

Thank you Masaman! It is honestly quite rare to find such a positive report about Latter Day Saints from non-Latter Day Saints. I can tell you though that the early Latter Day Saints were actually far more peaceful, polite, and generous than us modern ones are. In fact, a lot of us today aren't all that good at it. A big part of Joseph Smith's work was to make a society that would extraordinarily help poor newcomers settle in their gathering place among other generous things... and he did, like no other civilization I know of. Their were countless attempts by mobs AND even the government to illegally get rid of the Latter Day Saints. Time and time again, property and even homes were stolen or destroyed, there were many lives lost due to the mobs, and multiple times the government had forced them out of their communities with nothing in return, which they worked so hard to build. The early Latter Day Saints had done nothing wrong, yet everyone around them was against them. The most incredible thing is that instead of attacking back like most people would do at this point, they moved on with their lives and tried their best to forgive and love their enemies. There are so many records that Latter Day Saints kept that prove these things. And after 10+ years of studying many both pro and anti Latter Day Saint reports, I haven't come across one story against anything Ive said here. Some may claim that early Latter Day Saints were evil, but they have nothing to prove it. Please also note that polygamy didn't come into the story until the Nauvoo, IL period. If Polygamy is what brought you to the conclusion that early Latter Day Saints were bad, please look into it further. I'd rather you believe that the polygamy period was a temporary drop in righteousness, rather than they were always selfish people until they gave that rule up. Whether you choose to believe these things were from God like I do or not, I would like you to do some more research here. You can watch "Joseph Smith: Prophet of the Restoration for a more accurate story. Thanks again, it is always wonderful to see a non-member who cares about us enough to make any positive mentioned of us online.

In my view, LDS doctrine is closer to the predominant philosophy shared by both Catholicism and most sects of Hinduism (and distinct from the 'faith' foundation of Protestant Christianity). This key point is that actions are more important than beliefs. It's not what you profess, it's what you do. Despite the controversial history and to me unusual theology of the 'Mormons' I respect them. I am Buddhist BTW.

Nefi Arenas Salazar: Mucho gusto amigo.

This is the most correct and honest explanation of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints I have heard on KZread. The term Mormon was a negative title given by critics many years ago. Mormons did not mind the title and kept it, but Mormon was never the name of the church. If we are the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, of course we are Christian. As Christians, we want to behave as Christ taught for our entire lives. I hope I have, but I am not perfect. I love children and want to teach them to the best of my ability. Thank you for your essays on KZread.

Mormons have an even higher divorce rate then the national average because so many get married before they are ready. Many marry before they even have their first real job at the age of 20 - 23. We have billboards advertising divorce lawyers because it’s such a lucrative business here. I think this wasn’t always the case but it most certainly is now.

I do have to say though, I am a Christian. All Mormons are, hence why the official name of the church is the Church of Jesus Christ. We believe Jesus Christ is the Savior of the world. In fact, the most fundamental belief stressed in the LDS church is faith in the Lord, Jesus Christ. I do struggle with the mentality that that there are people who believe they have the power to dismiss the Christianity of others as insufficient or inaccurate just because there are a few differences from the norm. However, I agree with Masaman that it is best when one forms their own opinion so don't just take my word for it.

Gaspar Barão II Having spoken with several Muslims, I got the impression that Muslims revere Jesus Christ as a great teacher and a prophet. However, they do not view him as a Messiah, nor do they believe that he has any claim to divinity at all. Of course, I would accept correction from believers of Islam on that point, but that was the understanding that was conveyed to me. On the other hand, the Church of Jesus Christ believes in the divinity and godhood of Jesus Christ and also assert that he is the Creator and Savior of the world. Also, I view it as very obtuse to dismiss a faith or religion as weak just because they have a different view of Jesus Christ than you. I disagree with Islam, for instance, on many points. But, having seen the character of several of its believers, I can tell you that it is anything but a weak faith. ... And that's just one example.

While I still officially am classified as “Mormon” since my dad doesn’t want me rescinding my membership until I’m 18 in a month, I “spiritually” left the Church when I was 12 or 13, and stopped attending at 16. I didn’t like their rules, called the “Commandments.” My free speech was suppressed because I couldn’t swear, women couldn’t dress however they wanted because they needed to be “modest,” and a bunch of other stuff. But what I perhaps hate the most is that the religion itself isn’t actually that restrictive, but is so easy to fall to misinterpretation. For example, Mormons actually can drink caffeinated beverages, just “no hot drinks” which obviously isn’t clear. It’s so stupid.

I am a Mormon if by Mormon you mean member of The Church of Jesus Christ of latter day Saints and to participate in the poll will be hard for me, because it is foggy to me what the definition of a Christian is. If it's simply someone who believes Jesus Christ is the Savior of the world and we can only be saved by Him then yes. Or that He's suffered for the sins of the world, then yes. That He's deity then again yes. The very Son of God yes. These I think would fit a good definition in my opinion. However if it is that you believe in the Trinity that there's 3 in one and one in 3 then no. If it's that just because Jesus suffered for the sins of the world you just have to say you believe and after that you can go on a killing spree and still be saved I again say no. If it's that there is no hope for the good honest hard working man or woman in China only because they have never heard of Jesus then no. If it's accepting the Niacene Creed that was voted on but not scripture other than The Bible then no. We know The Book Of Mormon is true! It has taught me that Jesus loves all humanity and truly lives all humanity and there is true repentance that brings true forgiveness through Jesus Christ. If being a Christian means that I think God is incapable of speaking to is today as He did in the days of The Bible and revealing more of His word, more scripture then no.

I was so confused because I’m an inactive Mormon (someone who grew up Mormon but doesn’t go to church or practice the faith regularly). I was just like “what, I don’t remember subscribing to another anti LDS channel” 😂 either way I was excited to watch this video. From what I understand the Book of Mormon was plagiarized off of some bibliography from some native people. The allegation is that smith just added a biblical twist to it. Anyways, if you know anything about that please make a video of that as well! As a native myself, I would appreciate it. I know that stuff is very hard to find though.

You could honestly stick a chapter of the BOM anywhere in the Bible and you wouldn’t really be able to tell the difference in the two. If the Book of Mormon took inspiration from anything it was likely the Bible in my opinion

The Book that was plagiarized (in a lot of places) and put into the Book of Mormon is "View of the Hebrews." Church Historian B.H. Roberts did a huge study on this and it's the reason he stopped believing in Mormonism. Joseph Smith also plagiarized from other books, including the 1769 edition of the King James Bible. ---The Printing errors in that edition actually appear in the Book of Mormon. Smith also copied into the Book of Mormon what he thought were the words of the Prophet Isaiah in the Old Testament. He thought that Isaiah had lived and died before his Prophet in the Book of Mormon quoted him. However, recent scholarship shows that those portions of the Book of Isaiah had not even been written yet (they were not ancient writings after all) but they had been written in his 1769 Bible edition. So he messed up there --- he left lots of clues showing how he plagiarized. You can find discussions of all this evidence over at the channel "Mormon Discussions" or "Mormon Stories" and "MythVision" There are some really wild, and actually TRUE stories that should really be made into a mini-series. Joseph Smith had himself crowned King and he had a Council of Fifty men to help him take over the U.S. Govt. His Private Army at the time was bigger than the U.S. Army.

My grandma was a Mormon. My dad, her son, thought it was a cult. Growing up though, I never saw any specific Mormon thing she did. She just made sure we prayed during dinner and before bed. She didn't go to church, because she lived in Northeast Oklahoma and there was no LDS church there. I'm sure if there was, we would have gone. But my dad raised us Baptist. Currently I am no longer affiliated with any church. But even though I don't consider myself Christian anymore, I feel like my values are strongly Christian based.

I've known some Mormon missionaries who came out to the reservation. In my experience they've always been polite if not weird, but really their religion is just as foreign to me as other forms of Protestant Christianity or Catholicism. The one thing they have going for them is they don't have that history of centuries of colonial abuse against us like their Catholic and Protestant counterparts do.

No, but they certainly have an extraordinarily outlandish set of beliefs about the origins of the Indigenous peoples of the Americas. Did you, for example, know that your ancestors were really Jews whose skins were darkened for their sins? That’s their belief and why they call you Lamanites.

@@maiidegeese5052 What do you mean "red skin thing"? The Book of Mormon is flat out says "dark skin bad, light skin good". Is that what you are referring to? I know a couple Navajos who think they are "Lamanite" in spite of all genetic and linguistic studies proving otherwise. For example the Navajo and Apache are Athabaskan which originated out of Alaska/Siberia. I don't know about the Hopi but I doubt there is any historical connection to them and the middle east were someone to investigate it. As for the history of the Dine and the Mormon church, the Mormon church's youth placement program I don't think was a good thing. My friend told me his mom got placed in Provo Utah and basically became an unpaid domestic servant for her hosting family.

Missions were established all across India and the rest of Asia and were closed because of inter cultural difficulties this was all in the later half of the 1800s, Aboriginal Australians were accepted into the priesthood. Africa was the only prohibited continent because of the mormons african race policy.

This was a pretty good video. I only saw a few marginal errors (caffeine restriction, for example). As a latter-day saint, obviously I would say that we are christian. We are not trinitarians in the sense proscribed by other sects of christianity. But the fundamental salvific role that Christ plays in our lives is the same. He died for our sins and it is only by His name are we saved and have communion with God. Beyond that, our demographic is really changing and will continue to change. On my mom’s side I come from pioneer stock. But i’m also half nigerian and was raised with a Mexican-american step-father. My husband is also Peruvian and LDS as well. I did assume i would marry LDS. But that’s heavily tied to the value i place in my faith and how i want to raise my children. This has little effect on who i was friends with growing up. Or who i would befriend today.
