Hey! Love your videos! There's one tiny bit I might add here, concerning 2:08 part: In Erin M. Evans' The Adversary, second book of The Sundering series, it's stated that Harpers (or, at least, the Waterdeep cell) stopped using pins in favor of magically concealed tattoos that only the owner knew the secret phrase to reveal.

Yeah, but nobody cares about the sundering stuff. Forgotten Realms was basically trashed wholesale after 3.5, and has never recovered.

Haha Przemek, I only came to the comments of this video to make the exact same point!
I'm running an evil campaign and the PC's just emerged from the Shadowfell and funded the rebuilding of a town to draw in unsavory characters while our Draconic bloodline human sorceress amasses her Kobold army. Having the Harpers slowly start trickling in would be cool as well as maybe some Cult of the Dragon members. I'd love to get that faction's video so I can begin to build a rivalry. Fingers crossed it comes soon!!
Thank you for the video. It's has given me the inspiration or at least a starting point for the backstory of one of my backup characters.

They sound like such a nice group of people compared to the cult of the dragon which my current character has some involvment in.
I would of liked to have seen this video explore the darker side of the Harpers, touch more on the fact that the Harpers seek to preserve balance between civilizations. And I would surmise that their aim is the "greater good" rather than just "good". There is a huge difference between the two, because they are not opposed to taking down someone who isn't evil. Not all Harpers are beacons of light. Maybe I've just read lore where the Harpers aren't exactly the peaches and roses described in this video so my view is a be jaded.

I am confused. Here the Harpers are all about hindering evil and protecting good. So Neutral Good. But elsewhere they say the Harpers are Neutral, maintaining the balance between good and evil. Which is it?
I always found it funny how similar the harpers symbol looks a lot like the Guinness logo
Great job once again! Really excited to learn more about the factions since they are certainly a huge part of where my knowledge gap is for FR outside of what I had read in the Sword Coast Adventurer's guide!
Great timing! Just started playing 5e and I have a Bard! Given the small information given, wasn't sure which one to join. Keep up the great work. Watch all of your vids.
I'm pretty psyched you are doing these now, I just started my research on this so I really got lucky.

Great Video. I was hoping that you could do the rest of the factions next please. I have posted this to my local AL facebook group and will use it to explain faction choice. Its a great resource! Thankyou!
Great topic! Looking forward to more faction vids
Thank you Jorphdan. This is awesome.
Thanks for another great piece of lore!
Awesome video. Start off with the best, of course.
A group of players where each one belongs to a different faction would be interesting.
These have been a great breakdown
Really looking forward to more
My group cooperate with Harpers few times. I realy like them😁I hope u make few videos about evil organizations like Shadow Thiefs Guild. And I really love idea about this new series.

I recently made a character I'm really proud of, Bryn Von Eveline, known as Jessian of the Autumn Snowfall under the Harpers and across the Savage Frontier. A human bard. I'm having trouble deciding if it would be okay for him to have a big harper symbol on his cape. I understand that the harpers are a secretive organization, but everyone knows that they exist, right? Plus he has a secret identity. But then again, it would be kind of a literal target on his back. I just think it would look really cool. I think I might put something else on his cape, but what do you think?
Thanks for the info.
Hell yeah! Faction lore! Does this mean you'll cover the other factions as well? :D (Please say yes)
I just joined the Harper's in adventure league!
Ive been thinking of playing a AL Harper💯👍🏼😎
Cult of the Dragon next? Thx for content, Roll High
YAY, NEW VIDEO...Only 5 minutes?
'they are fun' :) true, nice
Cool vid! Might want to credit your pictures though before someone takes your video down because of them...
You know for the most part I think you're right, but I believe elminster is the de-facto leader at the moment. At least if I remember correctly from the Wizards of the Coast website.
cool :D just wanted to suggest two subjects to talk about. Faction wise why not do the cult of dragon as well, it was something very different than what it is now. Second how come you did not do a video on Cormyr? :D best regards, keep doing awesome work :D
Have you read the original Harper series of books? I think you would get a lot of good information from them.
Do you plan to do a video about the Warforged of the forgotten realms?
Do the Zhenatirym
Is jarlaxle then considered as one such person of terror?
Avecyn angel of hope
Can you maybe cover individual cities?
Who drew the art at 2:55? Because the hair is on point
The Harpers remind me of the Order of the White Lotus from Avatar, the Last Airbender.
YAY! FACTIONS! Can you cover Eldreth Veluuthra?

+1 for the Eldreth Veluuthra. One of my most interesting characters was a member of that group. A lot of complex roleplaying potential there.
Are you going to do the god kissed and the other groups throughout Forgotten Realms
sounds like my kind of faction
Any faction or lore thing in dnd devoted to or dealing with electricity and it's use? I know there are lightning sorcerers and storm paladins.
The Harpers are a force of . . . busy-bodies. Mwahahahahahahahahaha!
What you said about factions is false. Monstrous races must adhere to set factions, for some odd reason. Could literally have a lawful evil tiefling oath of the redemption paladin with a background as a uthgardt tribe member and still be a harper, even if it doesn't make sense in the least. But monstrous characters? That crosses a line I guess...

How do they keep in contact if they don't have organised leaders
@wolves600
4 жыл бұрын
they do have a council of elected leaders called the High Harpers
I made a unique Rogue(her primary job is newspaper reporter, why have I never heard of newspapers in D+D?), she would have leaped into joining the Harpers, but I could not make most of the sessions and left the game. Shame, damn shame.
Now I'm interested in the game, question; which edition should a newbie play? Or the 5th one is an update of all of them?

Jorphdan Thx Jor(PH)Dan
Or how about the multi-dimensional merchants that live in the city in the astral sea Uonin or something like that they are a race unto themselves though as well as the city serves as a hub for several different factions of particular note the Epic faction known as the god kissed whose numbers are demigods and Paragons anyone who has a spark of divinity and is of a good alignment
I remember in D&D 5e one of the main things the Harpers believe in is equality, yet in adventures league certain races (Goblinoids, Lizardfolk, Triton, Orcs, Kobolds, & Yuan-ti (Most of them are Monsters)) aren't allowed to join the harpers. At first I found it Hypocritical and bad, but as time progress I find my self liking it. As it gives birth to the Hypocritical Harper, showing how even the most moral groups can still be evil. The only flaw is that evil aliments can't join the Harpers which I find ruins it. I want to play a genocidal Harper who preaches equality but, wants to genocide monster races.

Some harpers (Starting with Khelben "Blackstaff" Aurunsun) also found this hypocritical and formed a new organisation, called The Moonstars, with basically same principles but allowance of monster races (they've got some vampires there iirc). They're not an AL faction tho.

A good start would be the Forgotten Realms Wiki! If you'll find info on that one too scattered, though, you can go to the basics: 1. 2e supplement "Cloak and Dagger" 2. Google "Portals of the Moonstars by Dale Donovan" 3. Check out Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide and update accordingly to latest years (hint: Lareal Silverhand, the Open Lord of Waterdeep, is also one of the founders of The Moonstars)

@Jorphdan
6 жыл бұрын
I didn't cover the non-human deities. Hopefully something to cover in the future!
I really hope you're going to cover more than the 4 "5e" factions, because the Forgotten Realms has a wealth of interesting factions and organizations that all deserve to be covered. You seemed to be following some short and silly 5e list for the deities, skipping a metric ton of cool deities (such as my favourite, Siamorphe), and I hope you don't do the same with the factions. The Shadow Thieves, the Shadow Circle/Druids, the Iron Throne (of Baldur's Gate fame!), the Cult of the Dragon, the Red Wizards of Thay, and many more. I think you did a great job of covering the Harpers from a pretty edition-agnostic point of view, so I've got high hopes for the rest - a lot of people just cover the bastardized 5e stuff, but you're actually doing a great job on basically everything you produce, even though it's obvious that you come from a point of view of 5e. Top-notch research and great summaries without assumptions. Keep up the great job.

I am very 5e heavy, and in my defense that's what is popular right now. Thanks for your comment, I do try to pull as much information as I can from earlier editions. There has been a wealth of people wanting more information on factions, so yes right now my intention is to continue and cover as many factions as I find interesting. The list I followed for my deities was from the Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide, but yes there are more deities out there. I think people want a break from them at the moment (I know I do) but I'll continue with that at a later date. Thanks for the great comment.
Why does Yeenoghu wear the Harpers symbol in 5e artwork?
@Jorphdan

Not sure! Gnolls take what armor they can from their victims and attempt to wear it. Perhaps Yeenoghu destroyed a young Harper?

The Harpers don't do good, the Harpers maintain the status quo. There is a very distinct difference.
You want to do something no one has done? What is a Pool of Radiance? seriously, google it. very little info out there, just info about the video games.
The Harpers are very, very similar in many respects to Anonymous.
First Comment!!!!
ph sounds like 'f'
I dont like the Harpers, its because of a campaign where we worked for them and never managed to come into contact with them without rising suspicion or being as subtle as a sneaking rogue in full plate.
Baldur's Gate 2 made me hate this faction. I know they're not an evil faction, etc...But i can't stop using every action of my characters to screw them over in campaigns where my DM puts them. Even when we're on the same side i use them as pawns or disposable allies, some years ago it actually became a running joke on the table.
@Luckmann
6 жыл бұрын
Word. Baldur's Gate & especially Baldur's Gate II does a great job of making you hate them, mostly because of Jaheira, even though the faction in itself is very under-used. I grew to actually like them a lot more based on their official fluff in pre-4e editions, though; they're actually a great faction, and there's a lot of potential in it, and I've been toying with the idea of a campaign where everyone is a member. But BG2 definitely botched it, and if that's your introduction to the faction (as it was for me, was back when) it is understandable that you'd be annoyed at their very mention.
@ambrosiogiovanni6952
6 жыл бұрын
You're so right. I think the writers tried to make them look cool by being the "man behind the curtain" in some quests, but it just annoyed some players who started to came up with tactics to slaughter them and keep Jaheira on the party. Anyway... About the idea of the campaign where everyone is a member. How about a group of Harpers that have "screwed up" in some way are sent on a mission, the characters mostly don't know each other before the start of the adventure, and you put them on some kind of crazy mission to redeem themselves.
@LightStreak567
6 жыл бұрын
Luckmann I know what you mean, but the Harpers Jaheira deals with in Baldur's Gate 2 are NOT true Harpers. They are the type that don't believe that freedom is a multiversal right. Harpers who sieze power, even if it isn't for evil purposes, is considered a traitor to the Harpers.
