Duncan Ferguson! a mind him headbutting the boy, was it that he got the 2 months in barlinnie for or was it an accumulation of things?? Canna mind, it was '94 but aye he was a big lad and could handle himself on and off the field. Think he's still working at Everton, possibly even with the youths. He was obviously a young boy when he headbutted the boy and came with a £4 million price tag. A lot of pressure for a young lad. Would loved him to have stayed at Ibrox but after that incident the prejudice would have been ridiculous. Wish him all the best

Big Dunc is steaming and Bullard just looks at the camera and makes the “what the hell if this guy on” face. Also two intruders broke into his house and he battered them both to the point where they pressed charges against him.

Sure big Dunc was one hell of a tough guy. There's a clip on him being rude with Jaap Stam when trying to get the ball, and even if the beast Stam have more physical power, you can see he respected Ferguson (otherwise he would've gone mad at him, as he did with others). Anyway, I wish there were clips of Billy Whitehurst around.

Everyone loves to hear a story about house breakers getting their due, but Duncan Ferguson managing to dish that out on two separate occasions on Merseyside of all places was absolutely story gold! Best celtic player of all time, and not only his skill but how durable he was. he kept going after getting kicked about from rangers players back when the refs were even more corrupt, the thugs of atletico madrid of 1974 and the thugs of racing club in the club world championship in 1967! And many more but he still went past players like they were not there

A big notable mention is Coventry's record outfield appearance maker, George Curtis aka The Iron Man, from the late 50's throughout the 60's. There was a story of how two doncaster fans tried to fight him, one was laid out cold and the other was thrown over a car, another of how some fans waited for him after a game, just to see him emerge and think 'f$$k that'. Also there's a great pic of him on a stretcher, broken leg, but sat upright as they carry him off. During his time as gaffer Brian Kilcline started dating his daughter, and was apparently shit scared of him.

People are comparing 'hard tacklers' with 'hard cases'. Roy Keane, Vinnie Jones and Paul Ince are hard tackling - but that is where their aggressiveness lay: within the game only. They are too civilised and do not apply their aggression away from the pitch. Hard cases such as Billy Whitehurst, Mick Hartford and Duncan Ferguson are true bruisers who would obliterate the aforementioned players above with minimal effort. As much as I like Keane and Jones, they are all verbal and pantomime - it is an act. Whitehurst and Ferguson, however, are the real deal and would pummel you into the ground on-and-off the field and not think twice about losing their freedom.

Liverpool had so many hard men but no one mentions Jan Malby. He had some screw loose. I remember 1986 cup final Everton players just stayed away from him and they had some hard payers at that era. He was also in prison for 8 months I think, for drink driving and speeding away from police. Later found car parked in his driveway after a long failed chase by police.
