Who Are The Berbers Of North Africa

In June 2019, an Algeria banned protestors from waving the Amazigh flag. Stating it was an assault on Algeria’s Arab identity. Why? Because the Amazigh are the indigenous people that have occupied North Africa since...well pretty much forever.
Fuelled by couscous these famous merchant nomads once linked the Mediterranean World with Sub-Saharan Africa. Fought against Roman, Arab, and French empires and now battle for recognition in their own countries. They call themselves Amazigh; we know them as the Berbers of North Africa.

I'm from the Northeast of Brazil, and couscous is an essential food here, but the main differences, I believe, is that ours is made with cornmeal and we write it "cuscuz". Also the portuguese were the ones who brought it from North Africa to Brazil. We've been eating couscous for a few centuries and it became a staple food in my region, since it's a cheap, tasty and filling meal for people living on the countryside to get through the hardships of the day, specially considering that we also live on a region with an arid climate. Thank you, Amazigh people of North Africa, for giving us such an awesome food!

Modern Berbers are still similar to Copper Age and Bronze Age Berbers, obviously with some differences acquired later due to relatively minor admixture with African and Eurasian migrants, but they are in no way Phoenicians descendents.

And thanks to your people the Tifinagh hasn't been lost. In Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia the arabization current has tried for long periods to erase our heritage, for a long time and in many regions it has succeeded. Fortunately nowadays we are starting to reclaim our identity and our heritage.

@@cuzimmoody6470 That is because they are Arabized and not Arabs, idk about Morocco and other regions but in Algeria the French worked hard to erase the Algerian identity to cease the resistance, so to make the local believe that Algeria is part of France they banned Arabic from schools along with Tamazight, they banned Islamic teachings and such while instilling the French language and values,... In order to restore the Algerian values and identity, scholars worked hard in teaching Islam, other sciences and Arabic again to the new generation to lead resistance against the French, and that what happen, after the independence unfortunately France already instilled their pawns before leaving, and those who lead the revolution became in the open and one by one they were killed, and after few presidents Boumedien came into power in illegal way, the Amazigh speaking people stood against him but soon he shut them out by making fake concerns and working on separating the Algerians into "Arabs" and Amazigh by creating non-existent racism, and treating Amazigh speaking people as a minority and not real Algerians, he made a lot of major changes whether they are good or bad but he created modern Algeria with all of its corruption, till this day some consider him a hero, and others consider him a traitor,..... in short whether an Algerian speaks Arabic or Amazigh as a first language and whether they consider themselves Arab or not they all share the same DNA of at least 80-90% Amazigh, Native North African.

@Junaid Islam The dominating viewpoint among Amazigh militants is the one of a secular society which tolerates all faiths as well as their absence. However, it does not require too much efforts to realize that Arabism and Islamism are both sides of a same coin. This means that one cannot eradicate the Arabian virus without eradicating the Islamic one. By the way, the Arabian language was invented at the same time as the Quran. The word "Quran" was derived from the word "Syrian", and the language of the Quran is a mixture between Syriac, Aramaic and Hebrew languages, thus giving rise to what shall be called later the (classical) Arabic language.

Amazing video, as always. I have an amazihr/Berber friend and I love that this gave me a deeper understanding and appreciation for his culture than I had had. Would you be able to do the ryukyu people of Okinawa, Japan/AKA the ryukkyu islands? I am a Japanese-Korean American, with my Japanese side being Okinawa. Since they are also considered indigenous people, I was wondering if that could fall within the realm of this mini series you are doing. That would sure make my heart warm to learn more about my own people in your beautifully simplistic animation style, and (personally IMO), charming and very listenable Irish accent❤️🙏🔥 much love from the USA
