Who am I? The Teachings of Sri Ramana Maharshi

In February 2021 I was interviewed by Anthony Chene, a French film maker. He asked his questions via Zoom from France. My responses were filmed in my apartment in Perth, Australia. Anthony posted a thirty-four minute version of the interview and gave me permission to upload a longer version that would include most of the material we covered. Anthony's version is here:

This is one of the most beautiful things I have ever heard you say David: "The mere act of waking up makes you realize that your dream characters didn't have any validity and that they weren't really suffering and that you attributed suffering to them when you had the perspective of being a fellow character in the dream."

It was probably new to the people who watched it on Anthony's channel. Many of his videos, especially the most watched ones, are about near-death experiences. I agreed to talk to Anthony becasue he appeared to have a large audience who were sympathetic to spiritual matters, but who had probably never come across Bhagavan or his teachings before.

And from that moment on that’s when I started getting panic attacks because since then that’s when I lost myself and I’ve been empty ever since!! I’m 53 yrs old now and since that day I’ve been thinking I’m losing my mind!! I would recite my parents names in my head and my cousins birth dates just to reassure myself that I didn’t lose my mind. How can I find myself again?? I don’t understand how to ‘awaken’ as they say. My mental health has really gotten worse. Please help me if you know where I’m coming from…😨🥺

Hi there🙏❤️ What I am saying is what I am saying ;) nothing else. Self inquiry is pretty much advanced. You need a mind capable of supporting it. How do I understand Atma Viccara( Self Inquiry) is as follows: Although there are different approaches my favorite is: Self inquiry : holding the question who or what is aware of any thought/phenomena?,..................... ................................................... , and rejecting any answer from the mind.(Until realization of allways present background of awareness become more clear) Is a very direct way to realize Atman( The Self). But usually when the mind contracts or reacts strongly to whatever happens in your life( Samsara) you lose awareness of Consciousness and get caught again in Thoughts/ego based reality. Flip floping between Aware of awareness versus getting caught in dreaming(ego based thoughts) is... half backed entlightenment. Glimpses of Reality. When awareness is aware of awareness 24h seven days a week Identification as an Ego ( "I" " me"= person/jiva) cease. Realization of Self is permanent= Moksha

Ironically, I lived a life that centered on the feelings of others. Instead of expressing my feelings frankly, I thought I had to live a happy life that would require suppressing my feelings to avoid making problems. At the same time, I firmly believed that my inner anxiety or nervousness should not be revealed. I tried to think positively or forced a smile on my face, hiding my unease and pretending not to know. Some feelings discomforted me, which I knew I should not be feeling, yet whenever those feelings arose, I would deny myself and suffer. I thought this was the right way, but reality told me the contrary. I became more vulnerable. I started to use the "Intended mindfulness playlist' and got much better. It really works 🙂🙂🙂

I am thrilled to listen to this updated interview with David Godman. Among his answers to questions, his fine-tuning and sharing in greater depth the method of Self-inquiry inspires, encourages, and confirms my own practice. Thank you, Mr. Chene and Mr. Godman!

Thank you for your dedication. I listen to these talks as l did my favourite stories as a child. It blows me away to think of a realised person in a cave being of greater benefit than, say, a social-worker!! ❤

He chose to exist in his body by not doing. This was the telos of his choice. Choice, I would say, is the ultimate responsibility. The work of Victor Frankle emphasized this point in Man’s Search for Meaning. Choice might seem to be an illusion in connection to the body. In this world they both objectively exist. Very profound message. Thank you!

When one looks at the events ,ideas or whatever that has been the catalysing factor causing spiritual transformation for me this teaching will be. Thank you fir quenching my thirst for the truth at least for now if not forever 🙏🏾💐♥️Magnificent. Explaing in understandable language concepts that are difficult to explain. Enjoyed your commentary Davidji! I am so fortunate that I came across your channel today and subscribed right away. I am in the middle of reading I AM THAT and your commentary on Sri Ramana Maharshi is very similar to Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj. I watched your other videos and enjoyed hearing about your journey to the east. Cant wait to read your books next. This subject, that can be hard to follow for many, but was made so easy to digest by your direct and straight forward commentary. This is exactly why three other Guru's choose you to write for them. Last week I fractured my foot that forced me to stay home during this long weekend (in USA) so I starting to read I AM THAT and looked for the same on KZread and found your channel. I guess there was a bright side to fracturing my foot!!!
