Who Am I? | The Philosophy of Alan Watts

Who am I? Am I the mind? Am I the body that contains the mind? Am I a descendant of an alien race that, long ago, set foot on Earth? Am I created by God?
The English philosopher, writer, and speaker Alan Watts believed that the most important question a human could ask is this: “who am I?” During his long career as an interpreter of Eastern philosophies like Zen Buddhism and Taoism, he tried to solve the riddles of human existence.
Because it seems difficult for us to see ‘who we are’ and ‘who we aren’t’, which Watts compared to the inability to bite our own teeth, he uses similes and metaphors to bring his points across.
In his lectures, he emphasizes that we are much more intertwined with the universe around us than we think and that the separateness between us and the outer world that our minds perceive is, in fact, an illusion.
So, we could ask: “what is this illusion? And if I’m living in an illusion, then, who am I?”
This video contains reflections on the thoughts and philosophy of Alan Watts in regards to who we really are, and who we are not.

@Fernando Deveze This is why I find whenever people have arguments and you can't pinpoint the disagreement. It's actually just because they interpret a word or concept differently. It's super frustrating if you can't figure this out.

@Fernando Deveze It's not that you're talking about something erelevant, it's that you've found the true reason behind the argument. This is such a bittersweet video for me. My ex girlfriend broke our relationship and all our future plans because she took inspiration on alan watts.. She wanted to live a life as an open spirit. Being Independent and non monogamous, meeting new people every day, and if the vibe is great, she would a sexual connection with them.. This has caused me so much pain because we felt deeply connected. Soul mates if you will. Its been only a month since it happened and i still struggle with the loss, brought me deeper into depression. She wanted to remain friends i couldn't remain her friend because it would just hurt me too much seeing a future without her by my side.. Maybe its my perspective on life and monogamy that is wrong, or its hers, or both.. I would love other peoples opinions about this if you really don't mind answering a fellow internet stranger. Thank you for the video. I have a lot to learn about life and our emotions Maybe one day i will understand the bigger picture.

People will always do things they want. It wasn't Alan Watts who told her to take those exact actions. She took his words and interpreted it in a way that suits her needs. That's the dogma of the new 'spirituality'. People just need an exuse to things they want.

People only act in ways that they are able to. Ultimately though, if she doesn't want what you want, then you shouldn't sell yourself short and compromise on your views just to fit into someone else's mold. It might be painful and you may want to seek comfort, but take this time to reflect on what you define a relationship as to begin with. I think people need to feel safe in a relationship so reflect on that. Monogamy may feel safe for some people where an open relationship may feel safe for others. What do you want? Don't rush to an answer too quickly. Take your time and try not to obsess over your negative emotions. They're natural because you can't help but feel the way you do. Take your mind off things when you can and just keep going.

This video really resonated with me because of an experience I had a couple of weeks ago. My mom was doing putting nail polish in my nails while she was grabbing my hands, while she was doing that I was just there appreciating the moment. While I was appreciating the moment for a slight second I felt this sensation of whatever I am or who I am was not my body but something else. I dont know how to describe the feeling or put it into words but it was a very quick moment and it has changed how I see many things now. Curious if anybody here has ever experienced something like that. Good day everyone!

Something similar happened to me once! I work in a lab and I was in the middle of a procedure I had performed many times before and suddenly had a sensation of 'these hands are not me'. Describing the feeling is kinda tricky, but it was as though, for a brief moment, I was able to step back and see this part of my body as not 'me', but as part of something much larger. It was a little jarring but also kind of beautiful :)

That is called being in the present, you are not thinking about your problems in the past or the future, you are just living the present moment, when you are able to disconnect from the past and the future you can get that sensation, there's a book called "the power of now" which talks mostly about that, if you are interested

Tank, experience is the greatest teacher. And here's some insight into your experience: Alan Watts was a metaphysical genius. He figured it all out except for several major points, which weren't revealed until around the time of his death by the Source of All: The Mind that is "God." God is the Mind that is ALL, and we are Thought within that Mind, given the ability to think WITH that Mind. This is what LOVE is: the communion of Thought in the Mind that is God. And as for The Meaning of Life, this world's greatest secret, it is this: We fell into limitation when we lost our desire for Truth. Therefore, we are experiencing a dream, a virtual-reality realm of limitation that is teaching us to RETURN to our natural desire for Truth. "And in your desire lies its accomplishment." When your desire for Truth become totally unprejudiced and absolute you will return to your natural state of LIMITLESS Being. Yes, THIS is salvation. And this is the entire purpose of the Cycle of Necessity, which is also known as reincarnation. I explain all of this in great detail in my book "THE HOLY GRAIL IS FOUND."

I explain all of this in great detail in my book "THE HOLY GRAIL IS FOUND." after a few seconds of watching this video i realised it reminded me of your video's, so i paused the video and scrolled down to see who it was made by, and was delighted to see it was made by you. I love you brother. It's the care you see! I doubt it would be possible to make such fantastic video's if you didn't care, if you didn't love. And that's why all of the beautiful people in the world love you my friend. Once they meet you and watch your video's they will see their favourite thing in life, which is love. You make this world a better place my friend. Thank you.

Alan Watts was a metaphysical genius. You are so lucky you had a friend introduce you to Alan Watts, that is honestly a blessing and it’s great to be thankful for it. Alan Watts and his philosophy, which is derived from Eastern Philosophy, is absolutely amazing and helps shift your mindset and perspective on not only yourself, but life/existence itself. He has brought much positivity into my life he has made me realize that happiness comes from within, and I am the true creator of my reality, as it is up to me how I feel from within no matter the life events that happen or people I interact with. I highly recommend channels like TheSpiritualLibrary, True Meaning, Elysium, Decoding Spirituality, and Not For The Masses; they all have full length lectures and short bite sized videos that are always nice to play at any time of the day. Cheers!

I lile listening to Alan Watts. He has certainly helped me with my journey. I like the new ideas coming forth that intelligence evolves to receive more energy or life force so we can comprehend the nature of the material world in a more profound way. So we can ask these questions like who am I? Where did I come from? Why am I here? and so on. It seems that the great minds and thinkers seem to agree on many of these points and I must say that I am leaning that way that we are life force energy, which holds useful information for our next experiences. I do vedic scripture readings and these are facinating and seem to be talking about the world today. The Kali Yuga is what we are in and this is the easiest time to connect to yourself and try to come to terms with these questions. Thanks for sharing. Another freat video and I am pleased to see you are getting sponsors. Good for you. :)
