Live More by Doing Less | The Philosophy of Slow Living

A growing group of people believes that we’re better off slowing down. This slower approach to life is known as ‘slow living.’ As a counter-movement, ‘slow living’ opposes the fast-paced life that aims for many experiences in a short time, as living at high speed means we’re often living hastily, chaotically, superficially, and with a lack of appreciation of the moment.

A lot of people don't feel comfortable with the idea of slow living because they see it as being lazy which they'll feel guilty for and their peers will reinforce that.

It's because corporations and oligarchs only benefit from a fast-paced, hyper-consumerist, tired, unsatisfied, unhappy populace. So they do everything they can to maintain the status quo and gaslight us into thinking a slow life is wrong.

As an autistic person I absolutely relate to that, most of my life whether it be education or just dealing with adult responsibilities my 100% is half of whatever the standard is for everyone else. So when I slowed down and started taking care of my mental health and limited how much I do in a day even if people weren’t saying it I constantly get this gut feeling of “you’re lazy and not doing enough”

As a child, I used to live as it should be. I enjoyed pretty much everything without knowing. Now as an adult I'm having a crisis of finding that magic again. Idk if it is just me but I think as adult, there's unwritten pressure that we put ourselves in and that steals the joy of our living. As a child to young adulthood, I used to enjoy listening to a dripping water from a faucet in a silent and sunny afternoon. I used to enjoy in a hammock watching the blue clouds moving with the breeze of the air and the sound of the dancing green trees. As of now, I cannot sit still and enjoy my little moments like it used to.

Well said and I can relate! Although it’s not easy, you can still stop, take a moment to reflect and lay down in the grass and watch the clouds move across the blue skies. As adults, life becomes pretty mundane and we take it for granted. But you must consciously decide to pump the brakes and relax. Even if it’s for 10 seconds or 10 minutes! 🧘🏻‍♂️ One love!

@@annupriya7875 I didn't mention this before but I have a 5 year old son and that really helped me slow down and see things through his eyes. The world is such a huge and magical place to him! We go to parks and are outdoors almost everyday after he gets out of school. In my late teens to mid 20s I didn't care about holidays anymore. I "grew out" of holidays and spending quality time with family. But now that I have my son, I want him to experience the holidays like I did as a child. Especially Halloween & Christmas. He reminds me of how it was to a kid! Love him so much!!

Had similar thoughts. It’s like at some point our developing as adults makes us lose natural knowledge. Meditating for long periods has often given me a feeling I described as ’I felt as free of worry etc like I felt at age 10 or or 14’ thinking less experiencing more having to do less.

My father was born in 1916, now deceased. He and grandpa were sugar cane farmers in Cuba. They worked sunrise to sunset out in the field and caring for livestock. No electricity and no plumbing; using well water. They had plenty of time to rest, restore and for reflection. In the evening they met up with friends to play dominos, playing music and enjoying community. We ate organic food and lived simply. So different for me being raised in Miami. Praying for everyone here seeking to explore slow living ❤ 🙏

Six years ago I bought a small piece of land and started planting around 400 trees. I also have vegetables, fruits, fish, geese for food and have cats as my friends. From the beginning of 2023 I got a job offer for six months. Only three months passed now but I realized how much I have missed my slow life where I talk to my cats and apologize to my geese the morning I get up late and make them wait for breakfast. Often they make loud noise when they are hungry. I walk through my tiny forest, listen to the birds and greet the bees who are always too busy to say hello back. When rainy season comes, it's the time to look forward to the beauty of the lotus blooming, especially the pink ones. The fireflies are flying around and sometimes manage to come into my mosquito's net. After working outdoor under the bright sun the whole day happy hour is taking a shower with rain water. It's so refreshing!!!

I agree with Thoreau, but it is worth mentioning that his mother did much of his laundry and meal-making for him while he was doing this Walden Pond experiment. That doesn't invalidate his philosophy, but it does mean, to me, that if we are to promote it, we need to be concerned with wider socioeconomic issues that impact all of us and marginalized people especially so that all of us may be able to live our lives fully, slowly, and meaningfully.

I retired 21 years at 45 and have been on the slow living path. I love it. But I don't think it's something a person can learn or decide to follow that path. I certainly had no idea what I was doing. And for sure there's no way I could describe my life that anyone else would ever believe. I've tried when friends asked "How are you doing it?" Meaning not working. The only acceptable answer would be "I have a ton of cash!" but that's not true...but they don't accept the actual answer. For example I haven't been to any kind of restaurant in about 10 years yet I claim to be happier cooking my own food. That's something other Americans cannot accept in any way. They don't believe I don't eat out and assume I mean I don't eat out often. They definitely don't believe anyone could ever be happier cooking instead of eating out. Past 4 years I've been a hermit. I like it. I know, you don't believe a hermit could be happy. I assume becoming a hermit is the natural course for slow living.

wow! a couple years back i had this lucid dream that kind of asked me, to what degree would i like my life simplified and stripped to its basic elements for greatest fulfilment; and to this day i am unable to fully answer it even to myself coz whenever i SERIOUSLY contemplate it, societal construct and conditioning of what is ESSENTIAL leaks even as i try to plug it in my best effort. i grow frustrated and give up. your example showed me the parallel in my life - when my mom has downtime/leisure, she's on yt vids and stuff and feels a great FOMO, that she's missing out on a lot by not watching it all. same time when i have leisure time, the greatest contentment comes from simply basking in the mellow winter sun, technology forgotten. the elements are supremely fulfilling. and yes, cooking is a pleasure. i love the process as much as the dish.

I spent years before the pandemic craving a slower, more contemplative life. Now I am closer to that than ever after practicing mindfulness, focusing on healing from burnout, depression & anxiety after loosing my job & my dad in the same year (pre-2020) AND thanks to the immense changes (& opportunities) that the global pandemic created!! I was sooooo grateful when the world shutdown, despite the tragic circumstances!! I had longed for the world to “just stop” so I could “catch up.” Now I know there is no point in running around and that there is no where to run to! I am here. I am now. I am doing what today requires first and then preparing for whatever comes next. I stop & smell the roses - literally. I pay attention to the breeze in my hair & the sun on my skin. I remind myself that a noisy, messy household is the joy of this life right now; someday it will be all gone and the echoes of the laughter & arguments just a memory of “the good old days” seen from the distance of my future empty nester self. ❤😊

People want modern homes, food, cars, and health care, that takes a lot of work. You can always work for yourself if you don't want to help make someone else rich. Warning, though, that's even harder work.

I am a gen Z person, and I have this style of living, and also minimalist, which makes me isolated from people from my generation. I always do a little amount of things repeatedly and digest them fully. Like, I go to only 1 cafe stores in 4 years without even changing place, I use only 1 item, one couple of shoes, one hat, 1 phone, 1 t shirt color, only change after I get bored but it usually takes months to years for me.

Years ago when I was in college, my cousin & her friend came to the city where I was for summer holidays, one day we decided to visit a famous historical place with ancient building, both of them is super excited they were bubbling with joy, I thought they were really excited about the place so I'm happy along, even with the super hot sun (being in tropical country) they both insisted on wearing their 'beautiful clothes' & spending hours on dressing up & do make up, by mid morning almost noon the temperature already very high but again we take public bus, I'm still going along😅 with idea that they're really excited to experience. Long story short despite some unpleasant things along the way, it was fine for me no big deal. We rushed to the place after bought tickets (it's not cheap but not expensive either) I've visited before so after enter the garden area even though there are lots of tourists it was quiet & peaceful with some corner there's calm traditional music is being played. Also I don't like going out on hot days but at that time being in the garden I feel everything slow down & enjoying it, but I still bring the 2 new people to the main attraction area, my mind already prepared being a guide & ready to tell them the story, but in the end we just rushed there taking pictures here & there - both update on the social media, it's just several minutes in front but both of them already lost interest & doesn't want to continue looking inside or around, they said "it was just like that & it's all similar", so we rushed again to shopping area outside & food area too cooling down bcz they don't want to holding anything heavy except the camera not even hat, ☂️, drinks etc only me bring it. But they lost interest soon .. again! So just like that we're rushing back, after back at home, they're complained about the hot weather & too lazy to cook/walking 100s meter to eat out, so we order online delivery for lunch, after that while eating both continue spending hours looking through all the pictures- edit some for social media etc, the expensive' & delicious food is nothing anymore. 🤐 At that time I said both of you are crazy girls, my cousin just laughing & said this is reality nowdays being in fast paced society, after that I don't care about them anymore when they're interested in new attractive place even though I'm interested I decided to not go & just help them with everything else then leave them to go on their own as long as they sent safe message 😶😅 I was just teen then still enjoying life, my adult life doesn't really start yet, I thought being an adult is really unpleasant. My cousin spending money 🛫 far away for the supposed relaxing holidays, spending again here & there during holidays but doesn't want/even bother to look at the place & enjoying it, spending money for everything instant & quick. In the end of the day, only 4 or 5 pictures remain from that holidays - posted online but not happy about it either, and then back to work again rushing to make money... 💆 What are we rushing for, like can we slow down on some things, aren't all the technologies meant for make our life easier - saving lives etc? We rushed on every things which makes almost every aspects of our life getting easier but our mental health is decline.

I arrived at this realisation in my late ‘60s and am now an active participant in slow living. I’ve prioritised living in the slow lane allowing me time to think, to appreciate the small things in life and not feel the need to take part in the race of life. I now have as much time as I want to do satisfying and enriching activities often from the comfort of my bed. I think lots of people think that I’m simply lazy not realising that I am actively living my best life. Get off the treadmill folks it frees up energy for critical thought and prioritising what is important to you.

As i got older, i noticed that i cared less about taking the pictures and more about the experience of just being there, enjoying what i loved. I believe saving memories is important for remembering but, no picture will ever replicate the feeling of the appreciation you gain from living in that one moment in time that you never get back, ever. the pictures were not perfect and they look old now.... but, the feeling i get in my heart when i think back to those days as a memory is immortally perfect, as if it were yesterday. i love your videos man, thank you for bringing insightfulness to the meanings of life for the few of us who truly understand it. After a series of unfortunate events that occurred in 2018 regarding business and relationships, I sold much of my stuff, packed up and moved across the country to distance myself from detrimental thoughts and memories. I began meditation and only worked part-time. I was living in a beautiful part of the country and spent much time hiking and swimming and visiting the coast whenever I had the chance. I recall that the words of Thoreau about living deliberately would often come to me during this time. I had been a man who had been married 3 times, owned businesses and homes in my past. And I allowed myself to become a man who is aware of the smallest birds singing in the high tree tops as I walk under them and notice the fish and the corals in the sea whenever I am near (and sometimes when I am not). I have lived more in the last five years, than I did in the previous twenty. My hope is that, for anyone who seeks it, they can create the peace and solace in life that I have found.

I finally found a video to this topic. We live in a time & culture where it is virtuous not to have time and to hurry. "Having time" or even "too much time" is a sign of laziness and non contributing to the pack. I live almost my whole life in a slower pace by default and never even thought about it until recently in the last years - Meanwhile i am 57 and feel more and more isolated in a crazy world of people running, chasing and trying to catch up with their lives. Living in a city with over a million habitants it`s even crazier - I deliberately maintain my pace and observe all those people ... i see fear.. alot of anxiety and frustration in their eyes . I often ask myself if they ever live or do they just operate? With gaining age & experience i tend to get more aware and mindful and love every step i take on a staircase - Avoid escalators and avoid lifts. This already began in my childhood as i loved to watch the clouds of milk disolving in my tea cup and all other little attentions to details. I have organized my whole life to this now, and manage my time that don´t have the need to rush - bedtime and waking up hours - Of course this only works when you don`t have kids but i would like to know, if there are any others who can relate to my isolated perception of things in a time lapsed world.

After our parents retired, & us the little siblings grew up, she's started to slow down & enjoy herself, even after later she's married having 1 child, she's not rushing anymore, several times already she's being recommended and asked to be promoted even being the leader but she declined all. Year changed but she's persistent. Now her focus is life balance enough money, the family but more on herself, she's working on government agency but she doesn't want to advance too much/too quick no matter how much the money or the status bcz with that there's more responsibility, time, & her own life. I'm really happy for her. Life is good but if everything is rushed no matter how much money we have it's not enjoyable anymore, so there are time we run, there are time we walk fast pace, there are time we walk slowly & there are time we rest.

This comes down to self mastery. This means, being free. In having freedom, you aren't pressured to conform to the life of what society has programmed the rest of the drones. You aren't climbing the ladder, corporate, fame, or lifestyle. You are you're own master, you are never in a hurry, being afraid to "upset" someone because you're late, like a slave. This means you are present in the moment, with zero worries for the outcome, and merely enjoying the process itself, and in turn, being great at it.

Thank you for this! Nice to get a little education on something I’ve been working in for long time 💙 I feel like this is an important topic in todays world. I hope more folks can learn about this so we can make choices about what is best personally and not just feeling the fast paced expectations as part of living now.

I believe living slow is making out time to do what you love frequently. Working hard is a must especially when you don't have enough money to meet your needs but don't forget to live in the process. Doing what you love is the pleasure I think was being referred to in the video

as a reader, i remember the times when the materials i could avail were few and far in between and ironically enough, the pleasure i got from consuming scarcely was more penetrating than what our current situation provides. it only solidifies the fact that scarcity creates more value and meaning than hedonism. it creates a want for innovation and thus progress. for instance, the things i bought with more intent and given much thought, those impact on me is long lasting. i could stare and admire them for far too long. living life mindfully is a practice, a habit which cultivates the senses for deeper absorption of experiences and other various stimuli. living slow and generating more pauses and spaces in between develops the mind for thinking and observation. you see more, feel more and think independently mord

a timely post good sir, ive been trying to hasten up the process of acquiring a new job, dissapointments/rejection made me feel worthless accentuated by the comparison of my peers who have seem to have figured their lives all together and i am left alone in discontentment and disarray. ive slowly again realizing the fact that we all are each in our own pace as you have said already in most/if not a few of your videos. i will try to be more accepting of these slow and steady states as i go through life. please do remind us every now and then good sir , you have my gratitude as always :)

Every time I spend a week rushing and doing a lot I end up sick the following week. Having too much to do damages immune systems so now my current mention is doing a lot less literally having more down time to actually just chill and do what I love slowly.

There is much truth to this, thank you! In my youth I got caught up in the human rat race, living and working in NYC as a fashion illustrator and taking crowded subways to and from work everyday 24 /7 but I made sure I slowed down on the weekends by hanging out at the great art museums around me and going to gorgeous Central Park to connect with nature! Then I raised three kids while having my own small home based business and an art business later on. Now in my elder years I've embraced slow living and live near the sea! Can it be as simple as being a city mouse versus a country mouse? I often wonder in today's even faster paced lifestyle if people do take the time to smell the sweet smell of roses or to smell the salt in the air from the sea while "Earthing" and "grounding" in the sand or green grass in the Spring and Summer?? One of the sweetest things I've experienced is falling asleep for an afternoon nap while listening to the soft gentleness of a summer rain shower! Delicious!
