I’m gonna take a stab in the dark and say that old friends and relatives are hitting Betty up for money. And she being type person she is is probably handing it out for every sob story she’s being told. This is a relatively poor area and the fact that people are giving them more attention now probably has Betty feeling wanted for once in her life. This is just speculation and only my opinion. That’s ridiculous!! I have a family of 5, live in southern Wyoming and my husband made around the same amount that the family took. We have a hell of a lot more to show for our 100,000 we made than they do. Foolish spending is what it is.

@@Xavier1... It's was my experience working with people much like this family in the Appalachian mountains, it's all about the right now. One of the families I worked with a local church decided to give them some help and it seemed that the more they helped the poorer the family got. It finally got to the point that I had to ask the church to limit their help to food and clothing donations because the family was spending nearly all the money on cigarettes and lottery tickets. The organization I worked for had people that would go in and help clean house for them. Those employees brought me 2 big garbage bags full of lottery tickets that had been bought in a month time. There was well north of $10,000 scratch offs in those bags. It was like they where chasing the rush of having a lot of money. That a feeling they had never known till the church got involved.

This money is coming from people who genuinely want to do good for them - and then you have a situation like this that completely torpedoes people's faith in humanity and changes the perspective of a family facing hard times who need help to a family that is simply taking advantage of people's good faith and will - even to the extent of lying and manipulating to get even more than they already have. 100k in just one year?! Yet they still live in the same dilapidated shack surrounded by garbage? That’s a shame. The one video I saw, there was a huge ATV and Larry pulled up in a big red truck that looked brand new and some of those trucks can go for 50k+ and a high end brand new ATV can go for 30k. Sad that some folks would go out of their way to create sensationalism to discredit someone who legitably was helping another. You have done so much for the Whittaker family. If anything, Tyler has made a total fool of himself and not only tried to ruin you, but also ruin the Whittakers.

EXACTLY, re: "...isn't expensive"! Mark did a couple of videos on the social problems of the area (remember the guy on the side of the road with the motorcycle?), in particular the rampant crack, *meth, and benzos - use? Remember the videos of taking them to eat fast food and the (huge) shopping at Walmart? Everybody "and their brother" recognized them! There are always people taking advantage -- I wouldn't be surprised if either of the populations I just referred-to didn't see the Whittakers as a potential "next fix" or a money pot! For that reason (and that they couldn't conceptualize such ammounts), there should have been some system of checks + balances, like a money mgr. Somebody has been draining that money ($3,000, $4,000, $4,000, $3,000,...)!

Something else that most people don't realize is the fact that every one of them receives a SSI check. No I don't know exactly what they get a month but let's do bare minimum at $800... That's $3,200 a month just for Betty, Lorraine, Ray and Timmy!! That doesn't count food stamps, they probably get around $1500 a month just for food! They're not as hard up as people think.

I could never imagine Mark being a ‘scammer’..it’s so disheartening that people exploit kindness and compassion because they can’t see anything else but needing drama and self centeredness I totally understand and I am glad your drawing a line in the sand and creating boundaries to protect yourself

If I were Mark I'd take the remaining money and use it to take Ray to the doctor and have his knee treated. The guy is in severe pain and despite him trying to communicate that to any and everyone noone has helped him with it. Any remaining funds should be allocated to helping Ray, Timmy and/or Lorraine or enriching their lives. While I feel for Betty, she has basically sacrificed her entire life caring for them, other members of the family clearly persuade her to give them the funds leaving the most vulnerable Whitakers with basically none of it.

Mark has so much experience with addicts and mentally ill, yet I cannot wrap my head around why he would create a go-fund-me, that was set up to just hand cash to the Whittakers. A family that CLEARLY does not have the mental skill or ability to manage money or their lives. Yet he starts handing them thousands of dollars? The Whittakers, Betty, Larry could have easily been killed over this money. Its clear as day Betty has been manipulated to use Mark as a piggy bank for her families drug habits. If Mark properly set up a foundation to have this money used ONLY on the Whittakers necessities(like medical care, housing, food, etc,), none of this would be happening. Its just shocking to me Mark was handing Betty all of this money.

The recent video of Mark showing up to the property unannounced to see if Larry was alive when his death was faked to get more money broke my heart seeing Ray and Timmy. They're at the mercy of everyone else. They were so excited to see Mark and obviously love the time he spends interacting with them. It's so unfair they're forced to go without because of the greed of others. They're also the one's most exploited by scumbags like Tyler when Mark genuinely cares and tries to protect them. They deserve the best care which all the money that was given could've paid for. Occupational therapy, psychiatry, medical care, etc. and vehicle/fuel costs could've easily been taken care of. If that Tyler dude genuinely cared he would've taken the steps make sure Timmy and Ray were cared for. Seeing people suffer is hard enough but to see people suffer when there's means to make sure they don't have to is heartbreaking.

I live in Appalachia too, and it's hard for people like the Whitakers to spend that kind of money. I live about a half hour away, but my son lives in Bluefield WVa. They really coulda had a nice home with acreage in that part of WV's real estate prices

Well some problems are more complex than just throwing money at them. There's are factors that were created over generations. They need social workers not youtubers with big wallets. They also have the right to live how they want. Just because an outsider deems it is wrong doesn't mean it's correct. That's all they've known their whole lives. Disadvantaged people should be looked at as someone who needs fixing.

As a journalist, I commend the work you've done and continue doing, Mark. You've humanized so many people by allowing them and paying them to tell their stories. You've helped many with your efforts but we can't save everybody. I'm so sorry this has been frustrating and difficult for you - you're a savoir. Thank you.

Heart breaking really.... Makes you feel like the person stopping to help someone in distress on the side of the road just to get stun and your car stolen, really helps people be generous and selfless... where are we going really in this world is unbelievable. Keep it up Mark ! I love your content and the way you make your interviews ! The fact so many different people are able to talk freely while you interview them shows of your abilities to make them feel safe and without judgment. She absolutely knows who Tyler is and what she said in the interview with him. Her motivation was to see if he too would set up a gofundme and she could double dip from donors. They have some genetic bottlenecking going on, but she definitely knows what she is doing. Don’t beat yourself up Mark, we love you and are proud of you and appreciate the beautiful example of show us all in how to be better, more compassionate and merciful in the world.

None of this is the truth. Betty NEVER said she didn’t know what was going on with the money. She said she didn’t know what was going on with the house- and maybe Mark never updated her. And these people can barely read or write so you know they don’t realize how much money they are getting- I think they are being extorted by other family members. It’s sad that Mark is blaming Betty. I grew up in West Virginia. Moved to California, and became a law enforcement officer there. I've watched SWU and the Whitaker's story from the beginning. You were compassionate and tried to help them. You did the right thing by them, and it didn't quite work out. So very many of us appreciate your efforts. We know the truth. Kudos my friend.

I completely trust your work and am so sorry you have had to learn this lesson in this way. Money is not the answer to the Whittakers' and many others' problems. The good you've done can never be taken away. Continue on your journey of love and compassion without the monetary piece. Bless you.

If Betty received SSI and over $150,000.00 deposited into her bank account over two years, she may have SSI benefits stopped, or have to pay back SSI received during months in which she had more than $2,000.00 in checking or savings.

It feels bad to believe Betty would not care, Mark said "nobody ever thanked him" here. I do to really believe this. But if Betty, who seems to be the brightest among them remembers to call Mark for money she should remember that he send it, she should not just tell this dude she does not know where it goes, but I think he gears conversations in the way he asks leading questions, he had this already painted out in his mind. Absolutely. I was thinking the same thing. The money should have been held by a trusted third party unrelated to all the people involved and be administered responsibly so it would not be blown as soon as they got it. I guess unless there was a contract drawn up before the Go Fund Me was made, it would be pretty hard to do, since people like this Tyler fellow would be pointing fingers saying that the Whittaker's were not getting their money that was promised.

Larry once said he needed you to pay for his truck to get fixed & after you said you would, he responded with “Well I would hope so!”… as entitled as he could be. The Walmart shipping trips, the fair, the hair cuts, not one thank you. At the end when you called Betty, she knew she lied to Tyler. It’s called GREED. What the hell are they spending $130,000 on?!? They all get social security disability, Medicare, on top of your generosity.

All of which they are supposed to be reporting those gifts to. You can’t just collect that kind of money and not report to disability etc. I know I have a disabled son with autism. They want to know everything I have right down to if my 2009 vehicle is still registered and on the road lol. They count every penny of assets. He should def stop at this point. this reminds me of when i was 7 and jimmy carter was president. we lived in a duplex that shared a porch with the unit next door. they had a little girl not yet 18 months old. they taught her that her diaper was a pocketbook and they would sneak up behind her and put wet leaves down the front of her diaper and tell her jimmy carter did it. she would scream STOP JIMMY CARTER and rip her diaper off then they would laugh hysterically. they did it until she was exhausted from screaming. then they taught her to cuss. they told her that as long as she danced jimmy carter would not come and get her. she danced on that front porch all the time. they told her if she would cuss jimmy carter from the porch he would not come and get her. she spent so much time holding onto the bars of the porch railing like she was in jail and cussing jimmy carter as loudly as she could. the neighbors all hated her. the year they told her jimmy carter not santa was bringing the presents she went to bed crying and saying she did not want anything. it got to where if you just said his name she would start screaming and run hide in the bushes. it was a long 4 years for her.

It does feel terrible. I have seriously helped out some people who I considered close friends - only to never hear from them again. Not even with the numbers talked about in this video either. I'm talking like covering someone's rent for a month or helping out with groceries here and there, then never hearing from them again. Not just random people - close friends of mine.

He helped exploit these people with the help of Larry and BJ. The rest of the family are disabled. They are inbred. Does no one get that. Thy should have gotten more and who cares. Exactly. Instead of getting mad at Tylor, when that old lady said in the interview was appalling, like seriously. Like she doesn't know where the money is coming from. But then again, they have have lite kid brains. So you can't expect budgeting skills nor self control.
