@@simontmiller So glad you asked, I love to talk about how wordsmithing works. (By the way, genre isn't college level vocabulary, it's high school level. I don't have a college degree.) The genre is Parody, specifically the subset of parody using caricature like in they do in The Office, Parks and Recreation, and The Good Place, and most Trey Kennedy and Jean Shorts videos, as recent examples. Caricature is exaggerating a specific characteristic (in my comment, that would be the person who BOTH spells their child's name uniquely AND takes offense that other people misspell it.) Caricature is done to stir up a set associations most of the audience has experienced before as subtext (AKA unspoken information) that: 1. this person is highly trend driven, a characteristic of Mormon subculture which isn't exactly known for its diversity, and is paradoxically a failed attempt at uniqueness within that highly conformist subculture (paradoxically is high school level vocabulary too) 2. this type of person wants their children in the spotlight, even in situations where it shouldn't be necessary, by intentionally causing recurring confusion around the child's name 3. this person blame shifts the problem from themselves as the creator of the ongoing problem to innocent people who defaulted to standard spellings because that's how common sense works. My "everything you need to know about them" comment is in the context of another comment saying out loud some subtext (as in, "You know they get offended when people misspell their kid's name." ) Trey Kennedy mostly uses caricature parody in his videos (Boomer, Millennials, Middle Schoolers, of Mormon Moms in Utah who spell their kids' names Kree8tyvleigh in this case.) If Trey and I doing that bothers you, maybe his videos aren't really for you. I mean, you can't complain that I'm doing when you tuned into to watch him do it.

German here, it's still this way. But it usually applies to names that would make the kid a laughingstock in life, would be humiliating or trying names that don't exist. I actually remember when this became a thing when we were in high school people talking about adding x & y to names to be “different”. So far the name that I have yet to hear one worse than was a boy named Sayden (probably butchered the spelling). Now this kid wandered away from his parents more than any I had ever seen while working, resulting in the parents having to SHOUT his name across the entire store and I kid you not every time they did it literally sounded like they were shouting SATAN. Needless to say that is now on the very top of my list on what not to name a child.

As someone who doesn’t spell their name in a complicated way (Kari), but has a name with lots of ways to spell it (Cari, Carrie, Kerry, etc), these crazy spellings make me NUTS. My parents didn’t even do it on purpose they actually picked the spelling they did because it was so short. I now have 5 kids with names that Will basically never get mispronounced or spelled wrong and I am so happy 😂

I work in my local university’s food court and the current students are mid 2000s babies so I’m just starting to hear the “unique” wave of names. A few of them are Brecken, Alectra (yes she has to spell her name every time she orders), Airecka (Erica), Aeryn (Erin), but my favorite is probably one poor kid named Tostadas.

My aunt and cousins will all spell it Nataley, Nataleigh, Natiliey, even Natuleigh, because they don’t believe it’s just “Natalie”. The world is so weird.
