    I had one teacher that was totally fine with us going to a school play for "extra" credit in place of an assignment. Another teacher let us right 2 page reports on a magazine or news article as "make-up" work for missed assignments. Looking back, I don't think they wanted to work either. And I know some of my teachers were completely stoned the entire time.

    To be fair, you can do 0 + 2 = 2. It's just that you don't actually need the two, you only need the zero to be higher in order to get 4 = 4, which is better than 2.

    You have access to the copy machine? Ha! We didn't when I was teaching. Not that it was that long ago, but they were too cheap to allow the teachers to use the machine. That was for office staff only. Yet, they expected us to have all kinds of copies and such for the students. It was either a mimeograph (if even that), our home copies using our own supplies that we paid for, or nothing at all. Add that to my very, very long list of reasons why I finally quit.

    These are awesome! Here's some of mine: 1. When my students ask me how to do a problem during a test, I tell them that I'm the mathematically illiterate identical twin or say something like, "What's that weird symbol mean?" Anything to send the message that this is the time to assess learning, not reteach stuff they didn't listen to the last 10 times I taught it and they wasted those opportunities. I only clarify what the question is and check if there's an error on the test. 2. When they ask about extra credit, I say in my most deadpan voice that there's a short list of things I could accept. Like a cure for cancer, a complete solution for world hunger, or proving Goldbach's conjecture. 3. If they ask what made me want to become a teacher, I answer, "To get rich, silly!"

    I tell my students the truth. I always inform them that they can be excused anytime to speak to their counselor, the principal, their assistant principal over their grade level or my administrator over my department. I say bring your parents at any time if you don't like what I said or to report me. If anytime I am called into a parent/administration meeting concerning a child I tell them the truth... what I said to the kids... I mean I love my job but it's a means to an end.

    Totally agree with the extra credit thing. When students ask if they are my favorite I normally just tell them I don't answer that because no matter what I say, some of the students I like will feel bad. Truthfully though I usually have over half the class ranked by how much I like them. lol :P I could totally list at least the top 10 in order if I wanted to for almost every class.

    I really loved the "extra credit" bit, and the "code red" honesty. Here is the truth that I want to REALLY see a teacher have the guts to say: "Yeah these letters and numbers on your report card do not matter...no one will EVER give you a job because they are higher than someone else's, and in less that 10 years you wont even remember most of this curriculum."

    That first reason for coffee…existential doom…yes! I quit teaching, and it’s sad but it’s so uninspiring. I wanted to be a true educator and 70% of kids, parents and teachers/admin just want a babysitter. I was working 6am to 5 pm and my kids loved me. I saw what they needed and I gave them breaks and opportunity to run (instead of sitting 8+ hours) and adjusted all of my assignments to be fun and engaging and I was going to grad school part time. The admin/other teachers were rude and told me to stop caring so much. 😶🙄.

    I'm not gonna lie, I lost it at the "extra credit" line. I can't tell you how many students ask me for extra credit and I just look at them and go "how about we start with your late work first"

    So my school has started hybrid for so half the school can go back and rotate every week. So when I was at lunch with the people in my class (my teacher was not in the room), the question came up on just how INSANELY LITTLE teachers get paid. We did some research and found out that the average public school teacher gets paid $60,000 annually, (which is not a lot!) and private school teachers get paid half that amount. It’s absolutely insane! Teachers are one of, if not the most hard working people on the planet and they get paid among the least. Without teachers we wouldn’t have the government or well paying jobs period. Because educators make children the successful adults they are today. Then we did a little more research and learned our school makes roughly $18 million a year, and under the assumption our school has maybe, just maybe a hundred teachers to pay, the numbers just don’t add up. Even with all the supplies they have to pay for, it still doesn’t add up! Our teachers are vastly underpaid considering all they do for our country. So on behalf of all students out there I just want to say thank you to all the educators out there who make our lives better. You may not be paid nearly enough but I just want you all to know how appreciated you are and even though we may not always show it, how much all us students respect and appreciate all that you do. Thank you, thank you, thank you to all the teachers out there!

    Imagine saying 60000 isn’t a lot yikes

  • @Lforaday3

    @Lforaday3

    2 жыл бұрын

    60000 is not a lot because by the time taxes, insurance, benefits etc are taken out you are left with a good 20000 less. Then in those places that pay 60000, you are looking at rents between 1500 - 2000 for a one bedroom. And, do I need to add school loan repayments on top of other basic living expenses Then school supplies... So no, 60000 is not a lot for what we do.....

  • @debbib6656

    And teachers do not make 60000 in many places. That's an average. Some places they make less and some places they make more.
