White Guy Shocks Entire African Family By Speaking Nigerian Languages

People always seem to have extremely positive reactions to me as a white guy speaking African languages, and I love connecting with people in this way, so I’ve been spending the last three months studying Yoruba and Igbo, both Nigerian languages, and in this video I visit a Nigerian neighborhood in New Jersey to test out my language skills.     What blows my mind is how fast he’s able to learn these languages. How does he do it? Is it just some superpower you’re born with? It really inspires me to learn other languages so I can connect with people from other cultures.

    Its quite easy, just learn the words and forget about grammar..... people will automaticly understand you no matter if it was correct or not and will help you.... people get too stuck up about learning EVERYTHING of saidlanguage... and end up giving up before giving it a try..... hard part is getting someone to practice with....

    It's always the best feeling ever when people get excited because someone else is speaking their language. It's the best feeling because you enjoy it as much as they do. Even just watching this video makes you smile the whole time Haha

    @@nuckingfuts7688 It's never too late to start. You heard him say he started 3 months ago. Imagine if you had started 3 months ago. Either start now or be three months onto the future thinking about how you would have been three months on your way to fluency in another language if you had started three months ago. Just do it it doesn't hurt and if you don't like it there's nothing stopping you from stopping. My advice: Enjoy the process haha!

    There’s a channel called Bald and Bankrupt where this guy just travels the world and records it all. He’s a British guy that speaks fluent Russian so a lot of the channel is him in Eastern Europe but he’s explored Africa a bit and has some great videos recording it all.

Both common forms of greetings, when Islam reached Africa it heavily influenced their language and culture. Yoruba language has been so much influenced by Arabic through various linguistic borrowings that Yoruba migration is said to come from Mecca, Saudi Arabia. Internal proofs of Yoruba’s early contact with Arabic and Islamic institutions are in the literature of Ifa poetry. Want more evidence? Or you want to call people liars without doing research?

    Also as someone who is speaking 4 languages (2 fluent, one conversational, the last still learning) you notice that a lot of language has a lot of similarities, and learning more makes it easier. Give it a try after your second language, the third, fourth, etc becomes easier.

    African people are truly friendly and you can easily make good friends with them. Especially the Nigerian. I live in Seoul and the Nigerian here are so nice, they don't hesitate to help you. And for them hearing someone speaking Yoruba, they will be super excited and happy to see that people are learning the language with interest😊

    Laoshu was such a nice guy. I remember when I was learning some Slavic languages and came across his channel when he only had a few thousand subs. Asked him what his techniques were and he was really nice in responding to me. I bought his learning system and it was really such a clever and fun approach to learning languages. His style of video was so unique and addictive too. So sad.

    He has such an amazing personality and i particularly love his vulnerability... Unlike a certain KZreadr called Sabbatical who happens to be a cheap American knockoff trying to copy Xiaomanyc's script. Sabbatical is so rude and condescending to black Africans & Nigerians... He only focuses on poverty in Africa and he only visits slums and ghettos in African countries... Oh, & he blocks people who disagrees with him or those who complain about his negative portrayal of Africa & black people. Xiaomanyc is such a breath of fresh air.

    @@SL-pg4dh I can maintain a conversation like him, but I think I have way better pronunciation because I have been around Yoruba people for years now. I understand almost everything people are saying around me and even if there is words I don’t understand I will connect it somehow and understand the meaning. When it comes to older generations here, I find it more difficult to communicate because their Yoruba is “deeper”. I’m staying in Lagos, I have lived in different parts of it and I’m currently in Ikorodu (one village close to it).

    Unfortunately, Nigerians will love you until you become their leader or representative, then they'll hate you. Nigerians tend to blame all their problems, failures and sorrows on their leaders... They have a strange relationship with authority figures.

    I just love how beautiful interations between human beings can be, when there is no political or religious axe to grind, or assumptive prejudice in sight. Just total respect for each other, which brings a tear to my eye. The interations restore my faith in humanity. Huge..huge, respect!

    @@S3din Way to miss the point. The U.S has no concrete “culture”, but is instead a combination of others, which is why the way of life is commonly referred to as a melting pot/salad. People who come to the U.S shouldn’t assimilate, but instead integrate their own culture.

    People are happy cause you are showing their culture respect by taking the time to learn the language. Not only to be able to mingle with them, but learning the language of the land you're in/or plan to visit shows you plan to try to integrate, and not force them to try to understand YOU. It shows your open to learning and accepting other's

    Yes. When my family moved to Switzerland they learned German and integrated with their way of life. I was born there and grew up speaking high Germans and also Swiss German. And due to the way we confirmed to their rules, for example the ‘quiet hour’ at lunch, no washing on Sundays etc and just generally their lifestyle, now living back in England it really grinds me gears when people move here and don’t even try to conform in any way, you do see this a lot in the Muslim community. Ofcourse not EVERYONE is like that. But they form their own communities not speaking to the English at allZ

    I’m half Nigerian and can only just about understand some Igbo. The fact he learnt this and can speak it at all is legit incredible. Such a hard language to pick up. I’m telling you, he’s the REAL deal. I’ve learnt french, Spanish, German in the past and these are far easier to understand. Keep it up man, love this content

    ...so is Yoruba, @@_WayofLife_ - further, all of the languages in southern Nigeria are deeply tonal. There are (easily) *at least* 10 distinct languages in the region - languages, not dialects.

    Nigerians are so kind! This was awesome, my grandfather was stationed in Nigeria with the US Navy about 30 years ago, he never picked up the language but would send back pictures and bring back things all of the time. I would love to visit sometime. I need to learn some of their language.

    Two things- 1) I am insanely envious (lol) as how quickly you pick up other languages. You truly have a gift. Second- I love how appreciative native speakers are when they hear you speak. While I'm not fluent in anything but English, learning a few key phrases and customs when traveling overseas, is just so appreciated by natives.

    You need to learn a script of the most common questions/answers, it's the same technique Laoshu50500 used (May he rest in peace). If you notice what people ask and say, it's generally quite similar. Where did you learn from, why do you speak it? etc
