    Good vid Andy, comprehensive but not over complex, the video shows exactly how to fish a charter when wrecking, which if you have never done it before is a steep learning curve. Wish I'd had your video before taking at least 2 plus days out to self-learn what you have shown in just one video. Good stuff!! Will show all our lads coming aboard the video so they have best chance to bag some fish 🤞 Now all we need is weather like in your video 😉

    in over 30yrs of jigging ive never put any bait on, we have a nylon leader tied straight to the rig and at the pirk on the bottom we would do a double granny, when you pull for a break when wrecked it breaks at the granny, so then you get the droppers back and just put on a new pirk, we always use the toilet roll holder or broom handle to pull for break

    Thanks for the video Andy haven’t fished out of Whitby in over 20+ years i was hoping to get back into it but wasn’t sure how to fish it, used to just use Pirks are these not fished anymore ?

  • @whitbywreckandreeffishing

    @whitbywreckandreeffishing

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi Gary. Very few people use Pirks nowadays, although they still work well. I think the inhibiting factor is the cost. A 1lb Chrome bar Pirk is about £5 to buy now in the tackle shops. It can be an expensive day if you lose a few of them.

  • @UKvet246
    @UKvet246 Жыл бұрын

    If the most expensive part of the terminal tackle is the lead is there any merit in using a lighter breaking strain hook length.

    Thanks for another good video. Total newbie to boat fishing so might be a dumb question, but is there any pointers as to knowing when your lead hits the wreck and knowing when to lift the rod so you don't get snagged or is it just experience you get with more fishing ? Also any advice on setting your drag ? P.S. you have cost me a fortune in tackle I have now bought but think it will be worth it, although I have struggled to find a supplier of the 4/0 swivel snap links you mentioned so will 3/0 be OK ? Many thanks for any help.

    Thanks Robert. I'm glad you found the video useful. When you're drifting the wrecks, it's all about controlling the tackle and feeling your way through. It does take concentration. As soon as I feel grating or banging, I lift the gear up. Depending on how fast the drift is, you will need to lift it less when the tide is slack. When the tide and wind are running, you really have to keep your wits about you. It's a fine line between hopping your gear over the wreck, or as I see quite commonly, lads who just drag it along and then get stuck most drifts. I use a lever drag reel and prefer to have it set a touch slacker, knowing that I can nudge it forwards a touch if I hook into a better size fish. Decent quality 2/0 or 3/0 Crane Swivels are fine. I've used the Veals Tackle ones in those sizes and they have been fine. Many Thanks Andy

    Hi mate great video, do you fish with lighter leader in order to stop braid loss?

  • @whitbywreckandreeffishing

    @whitbywreckandreeffishing

    3 ай бұрын

    Thanks for the kind words. I don’t use any leader at all. In the event of becoming snagged up, if you use a breaker correctly (plenty of wraps of braid around it) the braid will break at the weakest point which is the knot at the end where the crane swivel is attached. That way you don’t lose any braid. Regards Andy

    Hi I fished years ago with Stuart Johnson on his boat seatreck we used pirks (led filled chrome tubes) with a treble hook back then to catch cod, is that still a recognised method of fishing?

  • @whitbywreckandreeffishing

    @whitbywreckandreeffishing

    Hi John. Yes, it’s still a method that is used by some anglers who’ve been round the block a few times. It’s still an effective method for Cod, but quite expensive to buy from a tackle shop, to then lose them in a wreck. Everyone who I’ve seen using them, makes their own. Regards, Andy

    We target mainly Cod, Ling and Pollock from Whitby. We also get Pouting, Whiting, Gurnards, Wrasse, Wolf Fish and Mackerel in the summer. We had both Cod and Ling to 20lb last year. Average size differs throughout the year. August-October usually gives a better average size, especially the Ling.
