Whistle Mountain Review - A Glorious Mess of Euro Goodness

Whistle Mountain, from Bezier Games, is a mash up of a ton of stuff. Polyomino, tableau building, cardplay, worker placement....and then a million different ways to break the game. Starting powers, in game gears with abilities, card play and an evolving board full of dozens of machines that will give you a headache with the amount of pathways of turning this into that in a beautiful mess of a game.

Scoring System
5 - Great game. Period. It's in my collection. Obviously.
4 - Really solid game but for reasons X or Y, I'm just not willing to give it my top score. Almost always a game I'm adding to my collection.
3 - A solid game. May or may not enter/leave my collection depending on a number of factors such as other similar games, personal interest, people I play with etc. Sometimes can reflect a game's allure dropping over time.
2 - I'm either not the target audience, or too many issues with it.
1 - An arguably bad game.

I tried to buy this game during the gamnerdz sale, but it sold out before I could check out. It does look fun so I may buy it sometime in the future. And you just brought it back into my thoughts and added to my desire to have this game (was kind of take it or leave it feeling previously), so I may buy it sooner rather than later. Great review!

We love this game, so much fun... and that’s why we play. Luke Lauri is knocking them out of the park. His Cryo is fantastic too.

Shavua Tov. Thanks for another great review. We have played this game several times and really enjoy it. I do feel that it scales quite well, but is better with more than 2 players. It seems a little too open with two.

I can hear that. I've enjoyed it at 2 and 3 but agree that 3 was better.

Would You house rule somehow to eliminate your only nitpick about point difference in machines? For example If difference is higher than 3 points, you could grab a extra resource, etc?

I wouldn't for this game. I try to only house rule when it really affects my opinion.

Great example with the 5 Tribes comment. Oh dear, 2 of my core group are slow players no matter what. I'm thinking 3 hours for our first try!

that accessibility to the ability "tiles" remind me a bit of LIttle town, except the fact that, in little town, players have to pay to use your tiles ! wich, at 3 players makes that little game a deeper tactical experience. Therefore, I'm really curious about the Whistle Mountain ! coz i like worker placement, and polyominos, it looks like so... "WTF is this game ?" a messy sandbox as you say ! So my question, linked to that messy mess... Is the game balanced ? Is there's a better players count to play this game ? Is it ok at 2, better or too long at 3/4 ? Cheers

Something I was surprised by was Whistle Mountain’s potential to be kind of cutthroat. We had a couple games where one player would lay down scaffolding in the hopes of putting a big machine there next time they rested and then every time other players would jump in and steal that spot for themselves and then that player’s machine ended up never getting built.

It’s true, but at least building scaffolding gives good points
