I have had two canon printers both of which I was glad to see go away. Both were troublesome to use. Always a reason they could not print. I just threw out my $400 three year old eco tank canon as the pads were full and the printer cannot be fixed. I will never buy another canon product ever. Junk!

Just bought an Epson EcoTank (2803) and it cannot handle cardstock consistently even with the Thick Paper option selected in the extended settings. It inconsistently grabs the paper and sometimes the printing goes off of the page because it didn't pull the paper in far enough. We already had a G3200 which has never had an issue pulling in the cardstock. I'll be returning this Epson and recommend the Canon Megatank models.

Ink dries up before it is all used. Do you think this type of printer we could only fill when we need to print, not letting ink set for months not being used? Any information would greatly be appreciated.

I currently have an hp office jet 5200 all-in-one printer. I try to use remanufactured cartridges. Now I'm thinking of switching to an Ecotank printer. I checked out the hp instant ink subscription plan and since I use the HP Smart App it has statistics on how many pages I print monthly. I print about an average of 79 pages per month. HP Instant Ink will support 100 pages of either black and white or color printing for $4.99 a month or 300 pages for 9.99 a month. I'm wondering if I should just get the instant ink subscription or an ecotank printer. I found an ecotank 4800 printer for a great price.

Ink tank or refillable tank printers are great for high volume. For home use (where the volumes are under 20 pages or a dozen 4x6 photos per month) is the investment really worth the initial cost? I moved recently and need to replace 2 printers.... a general multi function and a wide bed photo printer. It would be "nice to have" a refillable tank (6 color) multifunction however, the initial cost would be outrageous for the amount of printing I would do, and the ink would outlast the life of the printer. The Epson ET‑8550 is $ 700 dollars while the cartridge XP-970 is $ 299. If I replace the full set of inks 2x per year that is $380 per year. It will take 2 years to brake even. I know tech keeps moving forward and who knows what printers will be like 2 or 3 years from know. If the Ink tank ET-8550 (or equivalent) were $200 less then I'd buy it now. Can't see why it costs so much except that Epson has to recoup the lost potential revenue from cartridge sales.

What I wish you would cover is the "ink absorber pad" problem in all of these printers. I have the 6020 Canon and had a previous Canon Megatank. I'm okay SO FAR on the 6020 Canon but I had to throw out the previous Canon Megatank because the ink absorber pad was full and even though you can add new pad material Canon will not give the user the reset code. I believe that is similar with the other two you reviewed. Love the 6020. I put card stock in the back and plain paper in the cassette. Does a great job but I fear that someday that ink absorber pad will be full and it will stop me for using this excellent printer. Why can't the manufacturers fix that sell the user an easy to insert pad and give the user the reset code?

My Canon printer locked up with a 5B00 code last week. Apparently, there's an unressetable print counter in the hardware. Canon support offered me a 10% discount on a new one, but I'd just spent $50 on unusable cartridges and I'm bitter, so no dice. I ordered an Epson EcoTank, but right now it's bobbing offshore on a container ship somewhere, but I hope the local Best Buy will be getting their delivery sometime soon..

If you are a big business owner and print everyday and want to dispose your printer every 2-3 years then buy epson because in many cases their printheads will show up signs of problems during those years or around after 7,000 to 15,000 pages of prints and it is very hard to acquire brand new print head. Epson will not sell printheads in the market, the way to only have brand new parts replacement is to send it to epson service center. Those you see in the online shop selling epson printhead are almost all used or 2nd hand and a lot have bad reviews. But if you are a small business office or a home user then buy canon pixma because the printhead replaceability is easier and most of the time available in online market brand new, making your printer last longer. They are also ink tank printer. Picture quality is also better with canon.

would be nice to have a review about all these pads that need to replaced. All of these tanks from Epson/Canon or HP needs their pads replaced in some way or another and its not the issue to replace them, the issue is you cannot reset the code on most of them and the printer becomes useless. Its a direct hit to the customer to throw away printer that can still be used. so yes you are saving on ink but in the end throwing away an expensive printer due to pads or using some sketchy software's to reset the new installed pads.

  • @alfblack2

    @alfblack2

indeed. that is why i will never buy an epson printer ever. Currently shopping for new printer. Discovered that canon printers will also have this error. *BUT* you don't need some sketchy software to reset it. Its a few key combinations to get printer to maintenance mode and reset the waste counter (search on youtube). Something that should be a included in the manual and not hidden to users. Well newer series Gx040 have the capability to buy these pads (maintenance cart). So canon seems to be improving its ways.

Thanks for this info on the three printers. I'm printing a lot of very high color usage pages for making journals. I've got two hp printers at the moment and am using their instant ink program which is considerably cheaper than buying individual cartridges off Amazon. I just learned about these printers with the large tank/bottled inks though and they seem to be a real money saver where ink goes. The other issue that I wanted to look into a new printer for however was to find one that has a direct path printer so that somewhat heavier papers can be used. I see that the Canon has the back loading capability. I was told by HP customer service that none of the HP printers have that option any longer, but it looks like the Smart Tank 551 pulls the paper from the back of the printer and straight out the front, so I'm confused. If any of these have a reliable direct path printing option that you have had experience with I would love to know about it. Thanks so much.

I watched your print review of the Canon and its print was faded. Is that still the issue? Does the Epson printers still have to go through that drawn out wake up process? That drives me crazy. I hit print on my HP and it starts printing without all that pre print process. Also does the Canon work like HP or Epson in that process? Thanks for the info.

One review mentioned that a scanning firmware update was needed and then this unit could do that. Hi, for double sided printing and low printing costs for homeschooling I would recommend the Epson ET 3850. You can get even cheaper ink by using remanufactured ink. @@mainefamilyadventures8507 buying remanufactured ink just like this dude suggested will void your 2 year epson warranty so keep that in mind. I've messed up both an old epson photo printer and most recently a Canon 5600 series Pixma (lasted 3 months) using knockoff ink

I have had HP desktops for years and loved them but the price of the ink has gotten totally crazy for me. Then my HPdesktop broke after many long years of service. things had changed so much since I bought that one, I need advice. I was afraid of changing from HP but your vidios have opened my mind and helpd me a great deal with my decision. Thanks.

What do you mean about the manufacture recommended monthly Volume of pages? What do you mean the manufacture knows if I go over the recommended volume of pages? Do you mean they know there will be problems because of the nature of the printer or that the manufacturers are creepers and they keep track of how much I print and will cause my printer problems if I happen to go over that amount? Thank you so much for your video and your help.

Its like an Espresso machine for the home kitchen, no one would buy one of those to try and start a coffee shop, it would not hold up, likewise, don't buy one of these to try and use with a book printing shop or in a commercial setting.

Here's a question that I never see asked/answered. What's the best printer(longevity of ink) under circumstances where you don't print much? I've found that ink cartridge printers seem to "dry up" after a few months. Pretty much a waste of money when you print mostly shipping labels and the occasional random thing here or there.

Hey, so the best printers for longgevity would be the Hp envy models. The only problem is they dont have as good quality or features as other types of printers. I may be able to respond in video format in the next month or so. Thanks for the question!

Just purchased a Epson mega tank. Loved the printer. Disappointed with the color. Colors were not as vivid. Colors were more on the pastel side. Does getting a better and more vivid color quality depend on which epson tank you buy?
