Which photo sells on Shutterstock? PART TWO: Comparing successful & unsuccessful stock photos
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Which photos are more likely to sell on stock photography platforms? How can you earn more money? In this video, which is PART TWO of a video I posted recently, I compare photos that I uploaded on Shutterstock - stock photos that are constantly being downloaded vs. photos that don't sell at all. This side-by-side comparison examines similar photos that perform completely differently. The key? Finding a unique niche and dominating it.
I hope this helps you understand what is more likely to make you money on Shutterstock versus the type of content that is too saturated to perform well and get downloaded.

Beautiful images as usual. This may sound odd at first but I'm surprised you got away with that photo which features "The Washington Post" text filling the frame. I did read on one of the stock agencies a few years ago (can't remember which one) that for editorial images, you can't have logos or brand names etc filling up a significant portion of the frame / can't have them appearing too large. So Ive always avoided that in my editorial photos.
@NicoleGlass
5 жыл бұрын
Some stock agencies don’t allow that (like adobe), but Shutterstock does. I’ve actually seen a few SS accounts where people literally just photograph and upload storefront logos. It’s okay as long as you upload them as editorial images :)
Another great video! Could you make video about your monthly income (from stock photography and video)?
However useful all these 'Shutterstock videos' are, they're also making me slightly worried that (to some extent at least), the whole stock photography market is a biiiit geared towards USA... or at the very least, capitol cities - but the only way to find out if it works from the countryside of a small country, is to try I guess =)
Awesome as always! Can you go into detail about setting up an FTP client for video uploads? Which FTP works best? Cheers

Kindly mention the category from which the photo belongs meaning that either its commercial or editorial. Thanks
Hi, Thank you for sharing your experience, very inspiring stuff. I just started contributing to few stock photography sites. I'm interested to know which of the photos you present in your videos are commercial licenced and which are editorial licenced. Some are obvious but some are not so much for me at least. For example the straw photo.
@NicoleGlass
5 жыл бұрын
It is definitely a mix. The straws in particular are editorial because they are Starbucks branded. I would recommend that you go to shutterstock.com and type in some keywords and see how other people upload the photos. You can tell if they're editorial or commercial based on the way they write the captions.
I love your content and your channel. Great job! I have a couple of questions which might be video suggestions. First how did you get the rights to shoot the Washington Post logo inside the The Washington Post building? Maybe you could do a video on how to get signed releases or how to approach the right people for releases? Second could you do another video on the other sites you sell stock images to, and rank them according to how you like interacting with them and your return on investment? Do you ever pay to upload photos for sale? Thanks again for all of your hard work producing shooting and editing.

I understand editorial content vs commercial content. My question should have been better stated how did you not get kicked out of the lobby when you started taking the photo? I still would like to see a video on getting releases.
@NicoleGlass

Hey Leo, the Washington Post actually hosted a meetup for photographers that I attended... so picture taking was encouraged. And that was uploaded as an editorial, not commercial, image. As for your other questions, I’ll keep them in mind for future videos 😊

This is going to be kind of an abstract question... I have a program that allows me to use 3d assets from a game. I can use 3d models and effects to create an environment. (I take screen shots from those environments and edit them to make them look realistic). Would it still be possible to post those on Shutterstock or not?
@NicoleGlass
4 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure that you would not be allowed to do that. You have to be the creator of all parts of the image. But I'm not 100% sure because I have not researched this topic in particular. I would recommend that you ask that question in the Shutterstock Forum.
Another great video Nicole, was wondering since I am a newbie to stock photography. The photo of the lady with the wine glass, do you need a model release for a photo like that since you can't see a face and make out who she or even he is. And do find you sell more Editorial photos Vs other kinds?
@NicoleGlass
5 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike, I did not have a model release for that photo. I definitely sell more editorial photos, but more than 80 percent of my content is editorial. So that would simply make sense. KZreadr Zdenka Darula has 12,000 photos that are primarily all commercial, and of course she sells primarily commercial images.

have you ever deal with model or property release? can you share your experience? Maybe even made a video when you ask your model or property owner to sign the release.

I've mentioned it before, but I use the app "Easy Release" (costs $10 last I checked) and just have them sign the release on my phone. It e-mails a PDF to both me and them, and then I simply upload that PDF to stock platforms.
Hi Nicole...When an image is competing with 5,000,000 others of same keyword search, such as ghost town, are search results returned in order of most recent to oldest? If so, is it possible to resubmit what is essentially the same photo but tweaked in edit, such as a slight color grading change? This could keep the same personal library current. I don't see this as 'cheating', as this is a business, and the consumer may not have time to go through 5,000,000 photos for my best image taken 3 years ago buried on page 83 of the returned search results. Please reply

Hi Nicole! For your ghost tour photo in St Augustine, since the ghost tour was ticketed, did that matter? Or were you still able to post as an editorial photo?

Hi Nicole! Great and very informative videos. :) Only 1 quick question at the moment. If you upload a photo to Shutterstock as an "editorial" piece, am I correct to assume that the photo will only show up under the "Editorial" category as opposed to "all images" on the first screen.

Nicole, if Washington Post wants that photo for commercial use what would have to happen? Do they need to grant you a property release and then you can list it as commercial? I've been thinking about it in the context of new power tools being put to good use and selling shots like that to brand owners.
@NicoleGlass
5 жыл бұрын
If you sell the photo to the Post itself, then I doubt you need a release form because they own the property. That would be kind of silly and superfluous. If you sell it to someone else then of course you'd need a release form.
Good video... again :) It would be interesting to know if you are planning what to photograph, or if you just photograph "everything" you see? I know you have to do some planning, but how do you do the planning? Do you get an idea and then search Shutterstock to see if your idea are oversaturated? Hope I gave you an idea for a forthcoming video :) By the way... it's fun to see that your channel are growing quite fast :)
@NicoleGlass
5 жыл бұрын
It's a mix of both. For example, I met some friends at the cherry blossoms in Washington, D.C. yesterday. Of course, I took photos of the blossoms (which are saturated) for myself and I took photos with friends. But while I was there, I also snapped a few photos of the tourists and the crowds, which I will certainly upload to SS. So I usually have a general idea of what will potentially do well, but I usually don't go out of my way to take the photos - I take them when I am out and doing something already. Thanks for the video suggestion:)
