    I have a question about editorial videos, do you leave the sound in the video, or detach it and upload with out sound? My current videos that I uploaded are without sound, as per the request of the agency (waterfalls and flowing rivers mainly), thanks for all the tips and videos, its changing my perspective on stock photography.

  • @NicoleGlass

    @NicoleGlass

    5 жыл бұрын

    Great question. Shutterstock usually prefers when the sound is removed, but in the case of editorial clips, they also recommend leaving the sound when the sound is necessary to tell the story of what is happening. In all of the video clips of protests, I left the sound in there because it was necessary to document what was happening. They were chanting something and the sound was simply part of it. But for cityscapes or landscapes, I remove the sound.

    I have uploaded videos to Shutterstock. I got up to 62, then quit for awhile. They're 1080p HD. 5 of those have sold once for an average of $23.70. Now, as of 2019, I have a GoPro Hero 6 that shoots 4K as well as time-lapse and slow-motion, so I'm more aggressively creating video clips. I'm now up to 81 clips and I plan to submit at least 25 more per week.

    What DSLR are you currently shooting with and how invested are you in the lenses? I think if we know that it'd be pretty easy to give you a few reasonable suggestions that would be financially wise. Typically, M43 and APS-C will be more value for money in a lot of ways, but there are some exceptions. Also, super shallow depth of field isn't as important for video. However, if you find yourself shooting a lot of night time content, something like a 5DmkIV or Sony A7SII/A7III might be a good idea. If you're doing a lot of moving, Canon, new Fuji cameras, and Sony's 3rd generation A7 cameras seem to be best with auto focus. Anyway, there's a lot to unpack there! Check out Potato Jet here on KZread. He has great video-centric content.

    Also, depending on how much you've been getting into video work already, it may be best just to dig in with what you have and learn the ropes. You can do a lot with 1080, especially if your camera can shoot in varied framerates like 24p and 60p for slow motion shots. Editing can also make a world of difference as you learn and improve with your software, at least it has for me.

    Thank you for your informative and inspirational videos about Shutterstock! I really like that they are shorter and that each one is concentrated around one topic and not lumped together in one long video :) Although, after having seen some of your videos I have come up with a question; what are your thoughts on uploading photos or videos of people who hasn't approved ones uploading of the media to i.e. Shutterstock (and especially since one's earning money from the media and their face)? I could never upload a photo or video showing a person's face without them accepting it. In my opinion it would be both immoral but probably more importantly, they might be under protected identity or otherwise not wanting to be floating around in the world without them knowing it.

  • @NicoleGlass

    Hey Emma, you can use your judgement based on the situation. In the US, street photography is legal. In Europe, the laws are stricter and you cannot share photos of people without their consent. The way I see it is this: if someone is out holding up signs at a protest or performing in a street festival, they usually want the publicity. If you're secretly taking a picture of a teenage girl sitting on a park bench, I would not upload that. Use your discretion.

    Usually when I'm shooting something, I am not shooting solely for stock. So it really varies depending on what I'm making the videos for. But usually I'm at 4k 24fps, unless I'm doing a slow-mo. I usually remove the audio unless it is an editorial clip where audio is important (like someone chanting something).

    Very interesting video :) I'm new to Shutterstock, but I have been with a other agency for 4-5 years. There I have about 2600 images and 120 videos (mostly nature/landscape). My biggest single video sale came last month. Then I got 357 USD for a drone video. Have had several sales for 0,2 USD, but the average for my videos are about 32 USD (39 sales in total). I think it's more fun with images, but I will try to shoot more videos in the future :) By the way... do you use your phone some times when shooting videos?

  • @NicoleGlass

    @NicoleGlass

    That is quite good! Did you earn the 357 off of Shutterstock or the other agency? And to answer your question: I don't usually use my phone (an iPhone 7) but I posted a video on Monday about using your phone for stock photography. As part of an experiment, I will be using my phone to upload content and in a few weeks I'll compare the performance of phone photos with my camera photos. I am also genuinely curious how they perform in comparison to each other.

    Very informative video Nicole. FYI, I have over 7,000 clips on Shutterstock, Pond5, Adobe, VideoBlocks and Shutterstock is a thorn in my side. I regularly get sales from them for $1.70! Half of all my sales in December were at 1.70. Hard to make money that way and even harder to keep the attitude up to shoot more stock. I am strongly considering joining the Pond5 Exclusive. Any thoughts?

  • @NicoleGlass

    @NicoleGlass

    5 жыл бұрын

    Oh my god... you seriously get $1.70 for video sales? That's unbelievable. I didn't know that was possible honestly. So would you say that Pond5 is the platform that pays most fairly? Like I said, I've never seen any of my videos on SS sell for under $15... but I'd be pretty upset if high quality vids were being downloaded for $1.70. If Pond5 is where you see the majority of your earnings, then definitely consider becoming exclusive. But only you would know if that's worth it, based on how your sales on the other platforms are. By the way, are you making a full time living from this?

  • @RobertPeakDesign

    @RobertPeakDesign

    5 жыл бұрын

    Hi @@NicoleGlass, I'm not making a full time living...yet. It is hard to say what my sales are with Pond5. Two years ago I joined BlackBox which takes my clips and puts them on the 4 agencies. Two weeks ago I became really frustrated with all the 1.70 sales and decided to start uploading to Pond5 myself. I'm at about 400 clips so far, no sales directly from them, yet. With their new exclusive arrangement, I'm not really sure what I am going to do. Based on what John Neff at the Crafted Shutter reported for his December sales, I'm thinking that P5 may be a good way to go. Putting the stock on all the agencies does seem like a race to the bottom, which I really don't want to happen or be a part of. Most of my 1.70 clips are all in a single collection that I have on all 4 agencies, but I do know that those sales are coming through ShutterStock. Long story short, I'm not sure what I am going to do yet. I am still uploading to Pond5 til I figure out which way to go. One of the main reasons that I went to Pond5 directly, instead of going through BlackBox is that because of all of the junk that flows through BlackBox, I felt the agencies were skipping over really good content of mine. I ended up doing a little test and recutting some stuff that Pond5 skipped over that I had posted through BlackBox. After cutting some new clips and posting directly to Pond5, not only were they online within 24 hours, but they accepted ALL the clips. Even ShutterStock and Adobe are taking forever to get BlackBox stock online. Clips that I did a year and a half ago are just now going live on SS and Adobe.

  • @NicoleGlass

    @NicoleGlass

    5 жыл бұрын

    Hey Robert, wow, thank you for that insight. I've been hesitant about BlackBox from the start and you're definitely making me question it even more. It's certainly a lot more work to upload everything yourself, but the payout is a little bit greater. I'm surprised how long it took to get your content to go live. Truly unbelievable.

  • @NicoleGlass

    Good question. I've talked about this in a few videos but basically: the licensing depends on the laws of your country. Shutterstock will not ask you for your drone pilot's license.
