Money-making NEWS photos on Shutterstock // 4 editorial stock photos that sold

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

How can you ensure that your microstock photos get discovered on Shutterstock and other stock photography platforms? It's not always easy to anticipate what will get you downloads. For one, you need to ensure that the photos you upload are unique, not in a category that’s overly saturated, and that they could be of value to someone. In this video I talk about four of my editorial image sets on Shutterstock that were downloaded by the news media in large quantities - and why these photos were so successful at one point or another. Maybe this video will give you some ideas or inspiration!
These four image sets include:
1) Photos of a Massage Envy entrance
2) Photos of The Wharf in Washington, D.C.
3) Photos of a vigil and protest held outside of the NRA building on the fifth anniversary of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting
4) Photos of overflowing garbage cans on the National Mall

Hi Nicole. I'm a new subcdr and into my second year doing stock where across the more common sites Shutterstock is the best payer so far. Two of the strangest images sold was one of roadside dumping/waste and snow on top of a council refuse bin. Done a wee bit of architectural stuff as well Scottish castles and stately homes more out of learning new skills but they have sold as well. Due to political climate in UK just now I'm thinking of trying to cover that as well. great vlog and have learned lots many thanks and keep up the good work.

After this I looked at your portfolio on Shutterstock and really was surprised. Most of your photos in Top are editorial. It gives me good idea what to shoot if would be suitable case. It is a pity that I live in a not-so-large city, and now I have been at home for 3 weeks at home on self-isolation, but even so I try to shoot something for stocks during normal remote work. Thank you! And Health to you and to your family!

Very informative and helpful videos indeed. I'm interested in your background in journalism as I have previously done some freelance writing with a number of my articles online and became interested in photography last year, having done some real estate photo shoots, free for portfolio and several paid shoots. Only became interested in stock photography a couple of weeks ago and yet to begin submitting photos to SS. So your editorial / journalism angle on stock photography is particularly interesting and helpful. Just learning the 'how to' at this stage. Thanks for your videos.

great video, on many workshops I am seeing the word "news hacking" popping up, which kind of like hurricane chasers or ambulance chasers, they jump on the latest breaking news item and work specifically on it, then they post it every where getting views and interviews as they are quickly become "the expert" so this is something that can be exploited very much.

If only i had a penny for every time shutterstock reviewers rejected my editorial photos and told me that my images had no commercial value, i would have a truck load of pennies. However listening to your point of view, it's becoming apparent to me that photographers are at the mercy of the reviewers mood at the time of upload. Although i agree with you that shutterstock photo sales are more frequent and consistent.

  • @NicoleGlass

    @NicoleGlass

All storefronts are considered editorial. In those instances there's not too much of a story (I suppose in some cases there could be), but just keep uploading those as regular editorial images and you should not have any problems. Check out this page: www.shutterstock.com/blog/submitting-editorial-content-part-1-illustrative-editorial "Photographs of brand names or logos on buildings, storefronts, or on cars can be accepted as documentary editorial with a proper editorial caption."

Do you have any trouble getting model releases for your photos?

  • @Ryan.Chapman

Hi I am new to stock photography and a new subscriber to your channel. I was under the impression that any picture with a brand or a logo would be rejected as stock photography. Also, I had been told that any photo with a "recognizable" person needs a model release, but how do you get that with a large group of people. I am guessing I was misinformed. I just saw the recommendation to watch your other video about commercial vs. editorial photos which I did not in now was different. I will be watching those and maybe it will answer some questions. I look forward to watching more of your videos.

Hi Ryan, yes the video I referenced (Commercial vs. Editorial Photos) talks about all of that! I've probably gotten this exact same question 200+ times on this channel which is why I made that. Hope that helps. And thanks for stopping by :)

I live in Orange County, CA. Not a lot happening here-or that’s how it feels. I’m dialed into the political news, but it sounds like I need to get more dialed into the local news, too. I’m new to stock photography; I’ve only started a couple of months ago. So far, I’ve sold three stock images on Shutterstock, but none on Alamy, iStock or Adobe. So far, Shutterstock seems to be the way to go, although I’ve only earned $.75 so far. Besides shooting editorial photos, how do we determine which stock photos are not oversaturated? Sure, we all know pictures of dogs and cats are overdone, but what other types of photos have been done to death? It’s hard to know what to try to concentrate on. What’s a good way to determine what is needed in stock images (excluding editorial, which you’ve covered here)? Also, what’s your opinion of briefs? I was going to participate in one, but then I read how many other photographers were against them. Apparently, after you upload your shots, you’re forbidden to ever use them even if your photos are never used. I find that to be a good reason not to participate in a brief. Additionally, photographers say that if your photos are chosen, you get paid a pittance compared to what a photographer should be paid, especially when the ad campaign is on a national level.
