It's so easy to go down a plugin rabbit hole where I end up spending more time researching plugins than using them. I've been disciplining myself to stick with the plugins I currently have and really get to know them. Another thing that might work for someone is to set a plugin budget and work within it. That way you can have the fun of shopping around and trying stuff, but not get too carried away.

If you're an FL User I recommend getting a better compressor or saturation plugin, only if you know what you're doing with them though

Nice to hear the topic being discussed. I don’t hear these kinds of recommendation often. And this is very helpful thank you.

For Ableton 10, I recommend getting good third-party compressor and limiter plugins as a place to start, such as the TDR Kotelnikov compressor and Loudmax limiter, which are both free. For a free saturator, I recommend Softube's Saturator Knob.

Amp Sims are the only plugins I truly believe you can't go cheap on. Other plugins, even FabFilter, you can achieve with others, you just might have to stack plugins. But IRs are just something I won't go cheap on. Neural DSP is killing it in every regard.

I agree that stock plugins are fine when it comes to EQ and compression, but I don't agree that you only use a dynamic EQ for very specific things. I'm a big fan of Tokyo Dawn Nova and have used it both as my stock EQ and stock dynamic EQ for years. It has profoundly influenced my workflow so I certainly would consider it to be one of the 3 or 4 plugins I use most. The free version is fantastic (by now I've upgraded to the paid version - now that is a luxury which you don't really need). I know you should first learn to use a normal EQ and compressor before you can understand what a dynamic EQ does. But once you do - can't live without it.

Your recommandation are good but, I have some points that you should add : - first analog emulations and saturation plugins are very related : what defines analog emulations is a non-linear behaviour that mimics analog gear and that mostly involves saturation. Also Saturation plugins can often acts as compressors or EQ... so your speech might be a bit confusing for beginners. How I understand it, is that you should try to keep it simple, and invest in one plugin that adds saturation and stick to it. This advice can also work for experienced producers. - reverb is fundamental but other effects can also be fundamentals depending on what genre of music you are into. Also, using free convolutation reverb plugins (in your stock plugins, or like convolution XT) can be a free but efficient way to add beautiful reverb in a mix. Nowadays it is easy to find good quality impulse responses that brilliantly great character to your mix.

Can't stress enough how good 3rd party saturation plugins like saturn sound compared to stock plugins! Also, Fabfilter stuff is top notch, and i cant live without Pro-Q3 at this point. if you are looking forward to upgrading your EQ, I can't recommend Pro-Q3 enough. for reverbs / delays *Valhalla* makes some of the best stuff out there, and its just 50$ for each plugin! (even cheaper in sales)

I'd say if your recording, try to get your signal as clean as possible. I invested in decent acoustic panels. I also invested in a quiet running CPU and case fans for my PC. That really cut down the low-end mud of my recording. Also, tweak the BIOS to get your PC running as quietly as possible.

Well, I'd agree but then he basically contradicted himself and proceeded to recommend upgrading everything except the EQ and compressor! I don't think any major DAW has a crap EQ or compressor, but oh well... Upgrade saturation? Reverb? Sorry, that is ridiculous. I don't know any top-tier engineer who can't get pro results from his DAW's stock plugins - saturation and reverb included. Too many wannabe producers who don't know their way around basic FX settings, yet are convinced they need the Fabfilter Complete Bundle if they're going to be successful at making dope beatz!
