    I just bought one of these off a guy on Craigslist the other day. Highest spec (2.7ghz) w/anti glare hi res screen. $350. I popped in a 860 Evo SSD that I had, and upgraded the RAM to 16gb (that I pulled from my Mac Mini before I sold it). Took out the dvd drive and put in a caddy to hold the original 1tb HDD. I’ll tell you what... this machine is a keeper. I immediately sold my late 2013 Retina 13”. Don’t need it anymore. Made back the money I spent on this, AND pocketed another $200. Just ran Geekbench on this 2012, scored 13,500 multi core. That’s almost up there with mid 2015 15” retina. It even outputs 4K via Mini DisplayPort. The only downside is the screen. It’s not terrible, but the retina screens are so much better. For this powerful (and cheap) of a machine, it’s totally serviceable. Good call, Luke!

    Exactly what I wanted to see. I got the mid 2009 Macbook Pro for around $2500 at the time, 2.66GHz. I downloaded contract breaking amounts of data, ran virtual machines and even ported high end games during it's lifetime. I have to cool it with a pad because the fans barely work and I broke the speakers by tweaking them, but it's still going strong. It still only has 4Gb of RAM bro! I even do light video editing... I just use a lot of external drives. I'm in the middle of refurbishing it and I feel like I'm getting a better deal than the 2019 model. If I can get a good 2012 model for decent trade I'll look into it. Thanks.

    Yes, it seems he overlooked the Mid 2012 Retina. The price has come down on it in recent years, and in my opinion the Retina display is still a big deal. Though I doubt Steve knew it as any more than an attempt to bring the Retina display to the Mac.

    But can only upgrade 1 ssd and can not upgrade the 8gb models to 16gb and have no internal DVD or blue ray option Port selection is good though, and the retina have tb2 instead of tb1 and usb3, instead of usb2, and are about a half pound lighter unless you remove your optical drive, and replace it with a second ssd. on non retina models. So i think the non retina models are the best.

    The perfect Macbook Pro would be the 2012 unibody with modern hardware and retina display, maintaining the upgradability with 2 NVMe slots and using the leftover space for a bigger battery. Actually the 15" MacBook Pro from 2015 with the 2.8GHz i7 CPU (i7-4980HQ) is the most powerful MacBook EVER. It's even more powerful than the newest 2017 3.1 i7 (i7-7920HQ) MacBook Pro. It's kinda unbelievable that a 2 year old MacBook is still the most powerful one. It also has all the ports and a way better cooling system than the newest ones, so it throttles less. If you don't believe me - just check the numbers. Google the CPU number with passmark after that and you will see that the 2015 MacBook is more powerful.

  • @lukemiani

    Alexander Karaatanasov I have to disagree that it’s the most powerful MacBook ever. The graphics card alone rules it out on that basis as it’s nowhere near the radeon pro 460/560. Also the fans run very loud. Trust me, I’ve owned both a 2016 touch bar 15” and the 2015 you mentioned, the newer ones are simply more powerful and quieter

  • @Ayeris23

    @Ayeris23

    6 жыл бұрын

    Great points, but due to the newer model's size, cooling is a joke. The performance isn't even getting up to what it should be because it can often throttle down to the performance of the older generation models, making matters much worse. Quiet doesn't equal performance. I would take a louder more powerful MacBook Pro with a larger, longer lasting battery any day over the tin can known as the 2016 and 17 MacBook Pro.

  • @lukemiani

    @lukemiani

    6 жыл бұрын

    Gonna have to disagree with that as well I'm afraid. I have found the cooling on the 2016-17 models to be quite excellent really. For example, I have been running Cryptocurrency mining programs on the CPU and GPU for 4 days straight and the computer has not overheated at all, it is running very stable and not throttling in the slightest. Granted if you block vents, or dust builds up the computer can get hot, but on the whole I have had no problems with throttling whatsoever. I reckon the cooling improvements are due to the much larger side vents, the thinner hinge which allows more air to pass, and the very large diameter fans

  • @Ayeris23

    @Ayeris23

    6 жыл бұрын

    You must have it in a cool area, or it's simply not working it as hard as possible. Keep in mind that mining relies solely on the GPU with the CPU barely doing anything. The point where the machines start to really show their cooling issues is when you are hammering the CPU and GPU, but mostly the CPU. Quinn of Snazzy Labs did a fantastic job elaborating and demonstrating this on his 7700K iMac and his loaded 2016 15" MacBook Pro. kzread.info/dash/bejne/aIiLxLqPZdvLiag.html

I originally bought a late 2011 MBP new as my first real laptop (several years after a bad experience with a Dell PC laptop which was promptly returned), but had the GPU failure in late 2014. I was going to go on a long vacation/trip for over a month so I needed a laptop, so out of desperation I bought a Mid-2012 via a local Craigslist buy for $700. The seller said it had 8GB RAM installed, but when I opened it up later, it had two RAM chips installed, with one not seated properly! After re-seating it, I suddenly had 16GB RAM! SCORE! After returning from my long vacation, I had my original 2011 repaired for free via Apple recall and sold it for around $700 (making my money back). This Mid-2012 Unibody has been serving me faithfully for over 4 years! I recently upgraded the 500GB HD with a 1TB Samsung SSD and finally upgraded the OS from Mavericks to Mojave. I'm flyin' with this thing now! The Mid-2012 is also the last MBP with an optical drive and Firewire (which is somewhat important to me as I use my MBP to record and perform music, and my audio interface uses Firewire). Totally hate the fact that the new MBPs are so lacking...Glad to find out I'm using the best MBP ever!

    I agree the non retina 2011 to 2013 with a GPU and CPU thermal repast and cleaning are great and upgradeable can have 2 ssds or one and a DVD or blue ray player battery and memory are replaceable. And the quad cores are even fast today. With hacks you can add a egpu and the latest is they are solid goid looking and not to heavy. I wonder if their are ram chips that will allow 32gb now?

    Yep, I had the last non retina 15 inch Macbook Pro and it was great; after that one I got a 2013 Retina 15 inch MacBook Pro, I really love this one, the Quadcore i7 are more than capable nowadays. Unfortunately as you said, this one cannot be upgraded as the former. I must say that the retina display is just gorgeous, (the non retina´s one was great also) and even I don't use it at full resolution most of the time, I really like the 1680x1050 resolution. The only issue I don't like on the retina MBP is that it gets too hot under mid multimedia load (I´m not sure if is the GPU or CPU the one overheating), however it performs really nice. Both computers are great for everyday work, web development, software development, windows or linux virtualization, video editing, you name it. MBPs are really stable and reliable. I really like this machines. Nice video Luke!

    I bought a refurbished (new battery + display) 2015 MBP with dPGU for 1200$. In December 2019, yes! Because it is the last reliable PRO macbook. Everything from 2016-2018 is just trash. Faulty keyboard and flex cable, poor battery Whr, pathetic I/O selection, no Magsafe, no SD-port, speaker and T2 problems, trackpad too big (palm rejection meh), touchbar mostly useless, the surface gets scratches much faster, overall too expensive, and they even killed the glowing apple logo... just pathetic. Majority of reviews and users agree.

    Some of these 15 inch mid-2012 (like the one I have) were customizable with a 1680x1050 resolution screen. I love the resolution on my macbook, virtually indistinguishable (for me) from 1080p and less taxing on the hardware than a retina display. Although on booting and windows while gaming I have to run most intensive games at 1280x800 resolution, but I still get 30-40 FPS on the highest detail settings, and 50-60 FPS on lowest settings.

    I'm getting my new-old MBP 2015 15" tomorrow; 2.8GHz/16GB/256GB (I'll be putting a larger SSD in it). Production date was just this last year a few months before they stopped making them (so no dGPU) and I actually still have some of the original 1-year warranty, and only 13 recycles on the battery, boxed and everything that came with it for a really great price. This will be my new everyday machine with some compromising;-), not the most compact but enough so, not the best screen or speakers (compared to the newest models), but still really good, wish it had thunderbolt 3, but hay its got all those other ports... and a really great keyboard and proper size force-touch trackpad ;-) The APPLE glow on top, magsafe, that beautiful outer case finish and fit, this is one very cool computer. Coming from my all-time favorite, the late 2011 quad-core MBP 17", which unfortunately died... again... for the third time... and now is not supported... so... I still had my mid-2010 17" dual-core and so will still be using that as my back-up, and its nice for general use and media with the big anti-glare screen, not 'retina' but still pretty nice with it best-at-the-time 166 dpi. With options like we have with vintage MBPs, and all the problems of the resent incarnations, I guess we are lucky.

    I recently purchased a newer laptop, but I still prefer using my Mid-2012 MacBook Pro. I simply switched out the hard drive for an SSD a couple of years ago and it runs flawlessly. It handles web browsing, Microsoft Office applications, and even Photoshop just fine. The best part? It has tons of ports. I agree that screen has a lot of glare, so hopefully I can fix that soon. Either way, six years and my laptop is still running strong!.. I wish that Apple would put these ports and the chiclet keyboard on their newer models.

    Good video but eliminating MBP’s because without high end graphics cards ignores 90% of the user base. It’s way more about Word, Excel, and Powerpoint. Large screens are good for the office but unusable on planes- even in business and sometimes first class. Less weight in your computer bag is very desirable. I have a 2012 13” MBP. 1TB SSD, new battery and screen. For $700 in rebuild, I see no reason to drop $3K this year or next on the newest model.

My mid-2012 i7 13” non retina is the most reliable. The 2009 15 and 17 inch have the tantalum capacitor failure. I only realised after buying a dead one. Has been solid ever since!

    Unfortunately they never made a 2013 17 inch. 2011 was the last year the 17 inch was made. Sorry. I've had both the mid-2010 and late-2011 [last] 17 inch MBPs. My 2011 had 2 logic board replacements becasue of dGPU failures, and one more a month after the 'vintage' label was put on it and APPLE no longer supported it or would replace the defective GPU/logicboard. Went back to my semi-retired 2010 dual-core and its still going fine. Not the post powerful MBP, but fine for general use and nice for media with its larger anti-glare screen. Going for a new (2018) production MBP 15" 2015 now for a daily work machine.

    Keyboard also matters because it is not a desktop, so you will have to live with the keyboard it comes with. For me the sound card really matters, but it's never bad in MacBooks, it's just... usually better in older MacBooks. The display... I do not mind 720P, I do care about viewing angles! The performance... who needs performance on a MacBook? MacBooks are meant to be simple, so it's mostly for basic tasks. What matters is an SSD and enough RAM for smooth multitasking. Then ports matter... and finally, UPGRADABILITY AND REPAIRABILITY. The late 2009 polycarbonate MacBook is my daily driver. I put 4GB of RAM, patched to Big Sur, and everything is supported, including the graphics except minor issues like iMovie not working. I only miss USB 3, but anyway it's for basic tasks. Sound card's really good, and the trackpad is possibly one of the best trackpads ever made. It was replaced recently, so it also feels like new.

    I have a MBP 2012 with upgraded two 500GB ssd and over stocked 16GB ram. I have the hard drives dedicated to Catilina and Linux Mint 18.3. The Intel graphics are not the best for some games, but I can do what I need to do with the computer. 2012 was the last year for DVD drive so one can insert a second ssd only in 2012 and below but 2012 has internet recovery and is go to go all the way up to Catilina so far. rEFInd bootloader installed in Mac makes a kick ass laptop dualboot. You need to hide some of the Icon-bootloaders in rEFInd to only have a Mac and linux icon to boot and I can not get bootcamp to install with a working rEFInd bootloader. That means I left Windows behind and I am able to get around so far without it.

    The 2016 and 2017 MacBook Pros are the best ever! They are well worth the money. I've been enjoying my 15" since 11/2016 and have had no issues with the keyboard or anything. I'll upgrade when 6-core i7s and 32GB LPDDR4 RAM is available. Hopefully they'll go with nVidia for the discrete GPUs by then. The best MBPs have always been the 15" models. Now that the 15" models weigh just 4 lbs. there is really no reason to buy a 13" unless you're financial situation doesn't allow it.
