Which Knot is the Tightest?

These 3 knots offer varying degrees of security. The clove hitch has it's uses, but should usually not be weight-bearing. The Constrictor knot is very secure, but in certain limited circumstances may jiggle loose. The Boa knot is the most secure of the 3, but can be difficult to tie. Which one is your favorite?

Thoroughly enjoyed your video. Been tying knots all my life. Some of them wrong. So at 71 yo I am doing them right. Learning them correctly this time. The constrictor knot and the double constrictor was a creation of the famous painter, author and yachtsman, Clifford W. Ashley. Not a lot of mariners are that familiar with them but if you have to jury rig your sailboat after a dismantling, or if your tiller handle brakes you can use Ashley’s creation to get you back home. It would be well to mention that they do not lose one bit of tension once drawn tight and would probably need cutting to remove. I’ve had to use them before in an emergency.

A boa is just a doubled constrictor, no different to a doubled Turks head for instance. You could also show a tripled, a slipped (really useful), and a false doubled constrictor. I’ll send photos if you need.

the boa looks like a double constrictor (3 turns) but the boa is more like a double figure 8 hitch. (4 turns)

I have knotted the Double Constrictor knot from Ashley (which book is very old) and the Boa knot, as in the video. I think, there is no difference between the two knots. Yust a new name for an old knot.

I'm glad to have stumbled across this video! just beginning to learn about tying more than my shoe laces! I've been working through a book called "THE ULTIMATE BOOK OF EVERYDAY KNOTS" written by Geoffrey Budworthy. He samples what you call a "Boa Knot" in his book, but he refers to it as a "Double Figure Eight Hitch" and gives some information on it's creation, he states in his book about this knot "Owen K. Nuttal, a member of the International Guild of Knot Tyers, encountered this knot on his way to discovering the snuggle hitch, but, it seems to me, that it makes a better binding know." Thanks for the video!

Your video asked a question I wondered if you had some way of testing which knot is the tightest but you don't , there is a more secure way of tying the clove hitch and that is by tying on overhand knot but instead of pulling an end through pull a loop instead then go around your object with the loop then pass it out between two cords ,it makes a clove hitch with the loops crossed it is far moor secure than the other way of tying it

"And then slip it over your object" seems like it defeats the point of learning a hitch. :( Sure, there are times when you have an open end on the object, but it's probably best to learn the knot for the cases when you don't, right?

I would absolutely recommend learning to tie these knots with the rope end as well! The boa knot would be pretty difficult to tie this way, but the other two are fairly simple. For this video, ease of tying was the focus, since that will usually determine whether the average person will remember how to tie it when they need it. On the constrictor knot in particular, the Animated Knots website gives 7 different ways to tie it, most of them using the rope end.

a constrictor can be tied around an object without access to the end of say a pole.. tie a clove ; assuming your first turn is on the right ; cross or bar to the right over that original turn ; tuck under original turn ; done ; constrictor.. 2 turns double constrictor just has a sevond bar parallel to the first one.. 3 turns in all the third one is very similar to a double figure 8 hitch which can be tied as a clove hitch with two extra turns and tuck unders. as strong as your boa knot.. i use it to secure an allen key to the recip saw... tie clove hitch.. cross right over the original turn.. go around one turn ; tuvk under ; cross left back over the original turn ; start the next turn between the original and second turn ; come around and tuck under 2 left crosses & 1 right cross ; done ; dress it up ; pull tight ; does not loosen up

Nice video. The simple comparison is easy to understand. In this genre of tying, I mainly use the Constrictor knot. It has the great advantage of being sufficiently reliable and easy to tighten. It is also a simple knot that is easy to teach to children. If the Constrictor knot is not strong enough, a Double Constrictor knot is recommended. It will be very strong, so it is unlikely that this will not be enough. Bore knot have a slightly imperfect structure, so they cannot be tied / tightened smoothly. But, it is difficult to move in the untie direction too, so it is secure in that sense. It's not suitable for everyday use, but it seems to be useful in special situations. Clove hitch is so weak that they cannot be used unless the rope or spar conditions (friction, diameter, etc.) are good, so I rarely use them. However, it is not weak if it is tied to the rope itself (it is often used as part of the structure, such as a Buntline hitch). Note that these knots are only used in the middle of the rope, not for tying the end of the rope (pulling from one side). Beware of murder instructors who don't know this and teach things like tying the ends of lifelines with a Clove hitch. Knots that are pulled from one side are "not" symmetrical in structure (eg Ground-line hitch, Snuggle hitch, etc.).

Always more than one way to tie any knot, just depends on your given application. A figure of 8 on the bight is quicker and easier to tie than a figure of eight follow through, but you would apply them in different circumstances. Being shown how to form the knot and placement on an anchor/dowel (as shown) and also tied threaded around an anchor/dowel would be of interest.
