Equitorial Guinea, Canary Islands, Morocco and others in Africa all have native speakers of Spanish. North America's first European language was Spanish, dating back to the early 1500's. All the way up from Alaska down to Tierra del Fuego.

In our family we have members from orissa and bengal .thru love marriages....not even one woman knows hindi ..leave alone reading and writing. Northeast not to talk at all. Bhojpuri is spoken only in up bihar and jarkhand. Not in bengal orissa NE.

I converse with South Indian doctors in Hindi which they understand and reply in English. I met a Bengali couple living in Lucknow who could speak Bengali but could not read and write.

Cool. Mandarin is the most spoken language but English is the most widely spoken language if you include secondary language that can be spoken and understood to a degree. That is probably the point of the video I’m guessing.

English only comes out on top if you include second language speakers. First language speakers - 1. Mandarin, 2. Spanish, 3. English

Yes Hindi & Urdu can be interchanged when speaking, but when writing they have 2 different scripts! However, words used are almost same; yet, Hindi is mainly derived from Sanskrit while Urdu mainly comes from Farsi/Arbic!!!

Even in Thailand, which has 9 million ethnic Chinese, you can't speak to them in Chinese because they speak Thai. And those who can speak their mother tongue, they speak Teochew. Chinese Mandarin and Chinese Teochew are like German and French

Let me take the opportunity to feel proud as an Indian as 4 (Bengali, Hindi, Urdu, English) of the 12 languages listed here are widely spoken in my country. My mother tounge is BANGLA. Sanskrit, is another language which is known to be mother of many European languages, particularly German language, was evolved in the ancient India. Most of the ancient manuscripts of the Indian pre-dated history were found to be written in Sanskrit In addition, there is one more language called TAMIL, which is spoken in the Indian state of Tamilnadu and also in many parts of the world, such as in Singapore and other south-east Asian countries. It is not the number of native or second language speakers that one should feel proud of once a language is free from danger of extinction, it is the quality of culture of the speakers which one shiuld feel proud of. On that criteria English remains undisputed front runner one should really be proud of speaking With more and more language speakers of Hindi, Bengali, Urdu & Arabic the culture and quality of members have taken a beating. Similar stories of Portuguese from Portugal and that from Brasil and Angola. Not sure of Spanish and French but thats likely to follow suit.

What are the languages with the most vocabularies entries (words)? I guess Korean and Japanese.

Google says 450 million people around the world speak French. I thought Spanish would be number 3. Somehow, Spanish wasn't on the list.

Come on! This is misleading. Knowing a language and speaking it are two different things. In Africa probably English is spoken by only about 10% of the populations of former British colonies. Mostly the educated elites. But the masses still speak local indigenous languages. Indeed the most spoken language in Nigeria is not English but Hausa (50m native speakers + 50m as a lingua franca). In East Africa it is Swahili. In South Africa, Zulu. Even the elites speak it badly. To say that an official language is necessarily a "most spoken" language is as absurd as saying in 1150 Norman French was the most spoken language in England. Or that Latin was the most spoken language in Europe in 1720.

@winstonpoole9906 Not true. Look at these former UK colonies: In India 11%; Bangladesh 12%; & South Africa 31%. Outside the Commonwealth: Mexico 13%; Agentina 7%; Brazil 5%; Russia 5%; China 1%. Most of the Chinese engineers building infrastructure around the world hardly speak English; only the project managers do. I learned German in school, but can hardly speak it. Same here.

The population of China is 1.45 billion and they all speak Mandarin. Though about 5% of the Chinese population also speak their own traditional language, they use Mandarin as a common language when speaking to people outside their ethnic groups. In addition, more than 300 million people outside of China also speak Mandarin and this number is growing very rapidly due to the increasing influence of China in the World. All in all, I would say that about 1.8 billion people speak Mandarin, which makes it the most spoken language in the World.

@@PhilTrivia They all speak Mandarin, without exception, though around 5% of the 1.45 billion also speak their ethnic languages. The Chinese are smarter than the Americans who cannot learn another language beside their own bastardized English.

Mandarin is not spoken by whole of China,and to the present population scenario Hindi will not be first or second but speaking people make be more than given figure of 60 crores,as,population jump is very much high in northern state of India,so it the figure could be 70 croresof people or even more than that who can speak Hindi.

And the millions of Spanish speakers in the U.S.? It has been spoken in what is now the U.S. SINCE 1541!

How will Chinese, Hindi and Spanish overtake English? Yes, you can use Spanish also in Mexico, Argentina and several South American countries, however, if you speak Chinese (Mandarin) in Hong Kong, the locals may understand you, but you won't understand them because their common language is Cantonese.

Sorry, the second most spoken native language in the world is Spanish.

Mandarin is the official language in Taiwan and Singapore. It would be over 1.12 billion as stated.

In south India less than 2 % people understand Hindi. Also it is new language with less than 180 years history. It was derived from various local languages. Hindi is still a raw language with difficult structures. Hindi grammar was created by Christian Missionaries.

You keep your valuation with you. Nobody cares, 😐. I still affirm that Hindi is of recent origin and has got a funny structure. It finds sex of materials like bench, desk, table etc. and changes the gender of these items when expressed with a synonym. What a foolish and funny language.

In the US and in Brasil there are in also German speaking areas e.g. the Amish people or the Texas Germans. In Brasil there is a whole town.

a language widely spoken should mean a language spoken in as many different parts of the world as possible.the number of native speakers using that language as vernacular should not be used to gauge a language as widely spoken.
