Dear ma’am , my child has been watching TV since he was 10 months old to 2.5 years old, almost a full day up to sleep. Is it the result today that he still has not developed language, ( he is verbal, can count, knows all colors, animals & follows simple instructions ) now he is exactly four years old. he is always engaged with us and very interested in children & people. very good eye contact, good social smiles, responds to name calls & no restrictive behaviors. For nearly 10 months now we have been sending him to the intervention center, we fully engaged with him, but still, we think this is due to the excessive screen time. we did an assessment when he was 2.9 years old & the score was 12 at high risk in M-chat. but recently I Checked with M-chat ( now he is 4 years old) and the score is 1 and it is low risk for ASD. pls, give your comments & advice

Questions: 1. My 23 month old points with his finger, but only relaxes the rest of his fingers (so that they aren’t next to his pointer) instead of bawling the rest of them up into a fist. I felt like this was typical of a toddler with emerging fine motor skills, but now I’m second-guessing myself? 2. He seems to understand 1-2 step directions and will start to go do what I asked, but then it seems he gets easily distracted by other books or toys or something else that he sees in the room goes over and checks those things out instead of completing the task. Both me and my husband are ADHD. Should I bring that possibility up to our pediatrician? Or is getting easily distracted, typical toddler behavior? 3. Teacher at school are a little worried because he only says about a handful of words at school. But at home hr has about 50 to 55 words that he has said consistently and spontaneously by himself, plus another 10-15 that he’ll copy from us. But I’m a little worried bc he seems to struggle putting two words together. When we model 2 to 3 word sentences for him, he’ll either say the first or last word, which I know can be indicative of echoalia, but he also has copied a two word sentence a handful of times. What can we do to work around this and get him saying simple sentences on a more regular basis?

It sounds like there may be some concerns. Whether it is autism or a bit of a speech delay, I cannot say but I can say my online courses are for kids with and without a diagnosis and i'd highly suggest taking it and begin helping him to gain more skills as we do want a solid point and the ability to follow directions and by 2 we want to be combining words and able to meet the cdc act early milestones for 2. He communicates his needs with me either through single words or signs. He will say hi and bye to people at the grocery store. He plays with kids of all ages. He makes good eye contact, and likes to point to things in books and look at us to make sure we’re “reading” with him. He passed the 22 month ASQ just fine. But since he’s 23 months, I thought we would get a head start on milestones for the 24 months ASQ. Speech is the only thing I’m feeling iffy about just because he doesn’t put the two words together yet and then only repeats the second word of the two word phrase we said. And he’s able to follow directions when he’s focused and there’s no other distractors in the general vicinity.

@@marybarbera Oh, he’s also said 2 word sentences a handful of times, but not consistently and it’s not common.

Hi. My son has tantrums, had no patience, doesnt turn when his name is called, spins around sometimes, likes spinning objects before & like to observe something that spins, hand flaps if he is happy or excited. Doesn’t turn around when name is being called. Picky eater. Doesn’t point something that he wants but instead he gets it and when he doesn’t get it he throws a tantrum or he cries. But when i talk and he finds it funny he looks at me. Cannot follow simple instructions yet. Only says abc or 1-10 but cannot have a conversation yet. He calls me by yelling not by “mama” but sometimes he called me amii. He is so clingy. When we are in the bed lying down and he wants to be carry he goes on top of me to carry him. If i dont get up he will throw a fit Were just preparing to meet dev ped but i am very anxious and we dont have savings yet to attend assesment. Do you think he has autism? He is 22 months and boy

It sounds like he has some potential signs of autism, but it's hard for me to say without having met him. I would check out the CDC developmental milestones checklist for his age group and bring your concerns to the developmental pediatrician. I also have resources available for you to help boost his language skills: MaryBarbera.com/links-yt
