    Canadian from Oz here putting a like and sub for you, your content is great. I think people need to think about what they're looking for in a set-up as well. I have an R10 in my garden and I hit into a net connected to an iPad. I bought Awesome Golf over upgrading the included e6 license, but I quite liked e6. It's just that I'm out in the garden hitting balls having fun and want a certain experience. If you're looking for fitting level feedback, well, the R10 is a poor choice. So is the Mevo+ potentially. But it's down to what you want to measure, what your budget is, and what use case you're looking to solve. I'm happy with the R10 giving me pretty accurate distance and shape data, but I know it's not going to properly reflect everything. I'm also not a scratch golfer. If I had unlimited funds I'd have a GCQuad and a dedicated PC / indoor enclosure. I don't. But this let's me hit more balls than I would otherwise, and at the end of the day hitting more balls = better golf. e; oh yeah, Garmin and Titelist have unofficially said there's a software update coming for the R10 for RCT support. I still probably won't bother, but that might interest some folks. also, mate, return the RCT balls and buy a box of gloves. That one is done.

    Great stuff Dave, I noticed this video is 4 months ago, just purchased some RCT balls as the R10 has been updated to use them. I bought the R 10 because I can afford it, and for the average golfer, which is probably 90% of us the extra for the memo is not worth it, I’m using mine with the Spornia net and the money saved on the R10 I will put it towards my indoor setup. The beauty of simulators is the fact we’re hitting balls every day, there’s no driving range near me and even if there were, all those buckets of balls cost. Finally there is a guy who has taken his R10 and set it up in a $50k simulator and compared the same shot side by side and with the exact same shots his R10 was within 2 yds most of the time. There’s a huge market for home simulators and as technology improves the numbers will get even More accurate . The cost for more accurate launch monitors will drop as more of us adopt them as a great way to add to our enjoyment of the sport. Garmin knows this and will improve even further. Cheers

    Nice comparison. I think metal dots work on both now and although you'd need two separate iPad's in this case to do a side-by-side-same-ball comparison, it can be done now, right? It'd be interesting to do a v2 of this video with that type of comparison.

    In order to really do a "shot by shot comparison" you could go to the range or in your indoor sim with your setup on the ipad with the R10 and the full set up (different ipad, different wifi / bluetooth connection) and the metal dots of someone having a Mevo+ (it does come with the metal dots when you buy it). The idea of the average comparison isn't bad but to get a significant result you'll need two things you've not done: a lot more shots (including the "badly hit ones" is a must), say 15 or 20 per launch monitor, and alternate shots between the two, say two 7iron with the mevo, followed immediately by two 7iron on the g10, and so on, so that you don't have getting warmed up effects and getting tired effects. On top of that, ideally it should be on a "blank screen" so that the visuals of one or the other software don't influence you (I find that I unconsciously hit faster swings when the visual is "the target is far" than when the visual is "the target is close"... it's something golf architects do play on, tricking you into "seeing" a hole as short or long). Overall, flawed as it is, that test shows that the G10 with awesome golf isn't that far off the Mevo+, particularly on shorter clubs. Would be interesting to see if the gap continues to widen with 3 wood and driver or if the 4 iron is just an exception of some sort!

  • @davidmaxfieldgolf

    Even if I used 2 iPads and 2 connections I still can’t hit 1 ball. The Garmin doesn’t read the RCT a ball or the metal dot which is required by Mevo for the accurate results. I used my phone and my iPad in the very first test with the same ball and same shot but the only way that works is with a normal ball which doesn’t produce the accurate spin rates of the Mevo+ I think all in all, for ease of use and value for money the Mevo+ actually has some catching up to do. If they want to charge $1500 more AUD for their unit then. I don’t really see the extra value personally

    Thank you for the video although I do wish you would do your research first and then post videos. The RCT ball is not officially recognized by the M+ (yet). The increased signal can and does throw the M+ off sometimes. Flightscope has said they are still working on getting the M+ to recognize the unique signal from the RCT ball. Metal dots do come with the unit and is still the only official way to enhance the radar signal in short indoor mode. The R10 is clearly a good device at a good price point. You appear to be a good ball striker and center the ball up most times. The Garmin algorithm works well with your swing giving good calculated spin data based on your launch angles and ball speeds although your 4 iron carry number results are a clear example of where measured spin makes a difference. IMO the Garmin R10 has narrowed the gap significantly with the M+ since it came out. The M+ still has its advantages including measuring spin indoors, more accurate path and club face data, better software for visualizing your swing data, and better chipping and putting due to the the dual camera & radar tracking. Are those things worth the extra money? Subjective but there is clearly added value there.

  • @davidmaxfieldgolf

    @davidmaxfieldgolf

    Жыл бұрын

    I don’t disagree. And you’re right I could do a lot more research on the balls before I post the videos but part of the discovery is also fun to go on the journey with people that way. It keeps it raw and unpolished and helps me remove arriving at conclusions before I’ve filmed the videos. I’m always happy for people to correct things in the comments so we can all benefit from everyone’s knowledge. I mentioned it at the end but the Mevo+ could potentially justify its value in my opinion to the pro or aspiring tour player with those 1% details that they’re looking for. Just for the average amateur and home user I don’t think there’s an extra $1500 worth there over the R10. 😁

    rct balls are not recognized by flight scope, use the recommended dots with 12 ft of ball flight and then you might get 1 miss read within a100 balls. you can adjust the sleep time on the mevo so your not waking it up all the time. If you want more consistent accurate data the mevo hands down. you also have the online play... GSpro is the big game changer here.

    Problem with the 12 foot of ball flight then 8 foot behind the unit is that most garages aren’t that long. I thought that’s why they have a short indoor mode? I have 8 foot each way roughly. And yeah I knew there would be a way to adjust the sleep time. With GSpro, it’s good, but they don’t have a max version or iPad version (to my knowledge) so as I run a max environment I couldn’t use that even if I wanted to. It’s a great unit don’t get me wrong but value for money and ease of use as a home unit I think the R10 takes it for me. On the range though I’ve used the Mevo+ and it’s better. (about 3/4 having good spin reads) Earlier this year, even the CEO of Flightscope said the results with RCT ball is as good as it gets with the Mevo+. Don't think he mentioned if they tweaked the algorithm speciifcally for it. but if they did/can, would be nice if they release an update for FS Golf to support it...) Mevo+ is in a different league to the R10 unit in terms of accuracy. Indoors, and especially at the range as it actually tracks the ball up to about 150 yards away. (Flightscope said it tracks to the peak of the ball flight but didn't mention up to what club) BTW, if your garage allows, you should change to 7 feet mevo to ball and 9 feel ball to screen. I do agree that there are significant benefits to the unit on the range but for the average home user of both products I can’t really see the extra value in the dollars. Yes it directly measures spin but the spin numbers with the r10 even though they’re calculated through and algorithm are the same anyway and just as accurate. @@davidmaxfieldgolf Yeah. Price difference is huge that's for sure. I've also recommended the R10 to few of my friends for that very reason. However, I would like to correct you on your spin accuracy assumption if I may. If you google "Accuracy of Approach R10 Radar", you'll see the Garmin support page with details information on what it measures and does not. R10 measures 4 things. Club head speed, Ball speed, Launch angle, and Launch direction. The spin rate is not measured at all for ball flight less than 20m. So there is zero spin accuracy indoors. Also, it's not measured for ball flight slower than 90mph. Thus not useful for shorter hitters or shorter irons even out in the open range. Also, R10's angle of attack is way off compared to the measured values of the Mevo+. So personally I wouldn't be able to rely on R10's numbers to improve or gauge my swing & shot shape. R10 is however (like most radar units) very accurate for club head speed and ball speed so would be good for speed training. BTW, for your ball-to-screen distance, definitely use the metallic dot stickers on your ball for the Mevo+ (and have the dot facing forward for each shot) as it would be much more accurate / consistent than the RCT ball. Definitely give that a try!

    I have the R10 and the only problem for me is it doesn't do well at all with long irons or woods. For me when I hit a bad shot the R10 seems to maximize it. Example would be a thin shot on the course may run out to 125 plus yards where the R10 would be maybe 40. This isn't a direct negative on the R10 but I use it with GSPro which is a great sim software. But the startup sometimes takes 10 plus minutes to get everything to connect up. The main problem is the API back door which links the R10 through the E6connect. It gets very frustrating starting stopping reloading until it finally connects up. If Garmin would officially support GSPro I it think make a world of difference. I was thinking of moving to the Mevo Plus but after your review I don't think it's worth it. Sorry about the long post but I've had the R10 since it was released and the new updates have helped with the short distance problems.

I have moved my net beyond three meters from the RCT ball and over two meters back to the device. I have a shot scope and have a good idea of how far my mishits run. But, we have dry hard fairways most of the time here in North Carolina so you can get quite a bit of roll. I was hitting pretty straight balls too, so you can't explain it away with a weak slice. I'm going to try my Yupiteru alongside and hope there's no interference. Also plan to tee my three wood much higher to see if I can get more ball flight. 3:20 unless something has changed, Flight Scope does not approve an RCT ball and only the metal dot. This being said, none of the data can be considered accurate. Please do this with the metal dot for an accurate review. You need follow what is recommended by flight Scope, there is a reason the RCT balls are not recommended. Also, the Garmin R10 does NOT read the actual spin when the ball travels less than 20 meters or flies less than 90 mph (from Garmin). That being said, my take on it is that I think the R10 is a good product for the price, but those of you that want a launch monitor that is very comparable to a Trackman for a lot less expensive, go with the Mevo+.

    I thought Mevo + could read normal balls on the range. If so then a range comparison would be a way to actually compare results from the same shot. • @davidmaxfieldgolf

    @davidmaxfieldgolf

    Why not just use the mevo on normal not range mode. The range ball mode is used to try and extrapolate to what a normal ball would do. If you used the non range mode then you would get a reading for what the ball is actually doing identical to the R10. Sure the numbers would not be the same as on the course but at least we would see how the spin algorithm of the R10 competes with the now actuate Mevo. Just a thought

    I appreciate the effort you put into this review, but ... I don't believe that the comparison ought to be physically between the two units. First, if you get a bad number it should be included as it represents what an owner of the device would see. Second, if you are attempting to quantitatively check accuracy it is my belief you need a standard such as a Trackman or Foresight (either GC4 or GC3) then present a table you create post data gathering to assign accuracy and reliability numbers to. Finally, my point of view is that the applied dots and/or RCT balls should not be used, certainly not without a standard to compare them against. My argument against the dots / RCT balls are that you wouldn't want to have to apply them at the range (and who would do that?) and the cost.

  • @davidmaxfieldgolf

    @davidmaxfieldgolf

    Жыл бұрын

    I hear where you’re coming from and in many cases you’re right. It’s just not possible to do that unfortunately. I go to have a trackman or quad here so I can’t use those numbers as a baseline. It was more to compare the units against each other and validate the accuracy of one another. The reason why I delete the shots of the italic spin rates is because Mevo is honest enough to use those and say that it hasn’t read the data correctly. So I wanted to put the very best results I could get from Mevo+ up against the Garmin. So with the best it could offer there was minimal difference between the 2 units other than why could be considered as a strike difference.
