@It's my way or the Highway 1968 well, you dont have to perfect it to use it against an average joe... With just 3 months of judo you can dominate anyone who doesnt have grappling experience if you train hard enough(at least 3 times a week with a teacher and sparing at least 5 times a week)

@Keda dont be so sure... Bjj may suck against multiple oponents... But there are certain throws in judo that can be aimed at specific targets... If you follow the basic strategy of get one of them between you and the other... You can throw that bastard into the other bastard and make them both fall(ive used it before, i dont know judo but ive learned a few throws from a friend who knows "police self defense" amd ive used them in fights in this way... Throw one into another and run like a bitch... Its the fastest way to end a fight... As soon as you did your technique there are 2 guys on the floor

That’s the stupid thing about some BJJ people. As a BJJ practitioner, I would never lie on the ground and welcome people with my chalice lol. I would instead try striking and use BJJ if they insist to go to the ground. I would also never directly go into a Judo slam unless I know the timing as I could get punched or kneed it elbowed or even kicked in the face.

I obtained a 3rd kyu in judo maybe, 10 yrs ago? I took up judo because under common law, we would still be charged for hitting a mugger in self defense. I have used Judo, and to prove it, I still have the police incident report, issuing that I acted under ordinance pertaining to use of force. Because I have used Judo, I’ve proof of the consequences of my reactions, and I still have injuries from the art, I’d say that BJJ is safer to train in. Train in what you want to train in. Really who cares if one is better than the other. I don’t. When you train, implement strikes into gripping. As you grab, strike with your palm on impact. If your attempting a scarf hold throw, strike with your forearm upon entry. You can head butt, shoulder butt, elbow and hand strike, whilst performing throws. Everything can be used in a fight. Maintain 6ft between you and whoever is in front of you, and when they move, you cause as much impact from within 5ft as possible.

@@quasar4601 The way I see it, as long as it makes someone happy to train any martial art, then the style doesn't matter. If someone is willing to broaden their horizons, they deserve respect, even if they train but don't compete. I never competed in a tournament due to chronic pain, back pain specifically, so I'm not able to practice how I used to. I've gotten to the point where I focus almost entirely on my grappling (Which I take from different sources along with my most well-practiced throws from Judo and some Combat Hapkido.) because the back pain has limited my ability to strike. (Hard to believe I only just turned 26 isn't it? lol) I just realized that my original comment probably made me sound like an elitist, which I can honestly say that I'm not. I say Judo has the edge for several reasons: it teaches you to fight in a natural posture, you develop a great takedown game and don’t go to the ground unless it’s on your terms, it emphasizes a super heavy top game and to immediately hunt for submissions, groundwork is very aggressive and urgent similar to a real fight.

Yeah the cement would hurt worse probably. Being knocked out either way wins you the fight. But I don't think you can count on a single blow or throw to win. To much can go wrong and it probably will in a fight. I think you need to know some striking (boxing or kickboxing in some form), clinching and throwing (boxing - wrestling - judo) and a ground game like Catch and Catch - Judo- BBJ. You need a self- defense based attack and defense. I think Krav Maga would work well against the average person you would fight on the street. it is more about getting away. However, no one style is going to totally protect you. I think MMA, although a sport and not a self-defense system, shows you that you need bits of many different styles. What is best I think depends on the person and his abilities and time he has to devote to it. I think if you piss off any black belt or equivalent in any martial art that has elements included in MMA or Krav Maga you are in a very serious problem that will hurt. Boxing - kickboxing - wrestling -BBJ- Catch Wrestling - High school wrestling - Judo - are all bad ass if the opponent does not know how to defense against that style. You need a good self defense style stand up fighting style that can include clinches and throws as well as an emergency ground game. If you are a boxer and a good one your are still in trouble if are on your back and a guy is on top of you.

But I have a JJ bias and in my school we sometimes put on gloves and did strikes with takedowns and throwing and no gi and every match started on our feet. You can't always stop a wrestler from taking you down. You need to learn to strike, throw and grapple. You might actually not be able to take your opponent down. Judo by far! With all the falling training you are also very prepared for all kind of accidents. Having done Judo for about ten years, all my falling reflexes saved me from a couple of concussions, when I fell, slipped or got thrown of my bike. Also it is extremely effective against all kinds of school bullies or simple school fights. Being able to bring your oponent to the ground in a couple of seconds sends a great warning against other possible agressors. I remember using it twice in my school when I was young and after that nobody bothered me again.

as a BB in judo and BJJ, i always recommend kids to start in judo. It is more difficult to learn to throw your opponent than learning to submit individual. It also develops a base where your center of gravity is unmovable regardless of your height and weight. It also develops a fundamental basis for newaza (ground game) equivalent to a blue belt once you reach BB in judo. when you're an old man like myself, you won't have the energy to develop judo skills to your optimal. Old judokas continue to practice with newaza.

Like you said, it starts standing, and you want to remain standing. This judo is difficult to find today because of the focus on making it a sport. BJJ basically took all their things from kosen judo and made the entries fit the dynamic of BJJ more, but essentially all the moves are from kosen judo.

Still haven't decided so I probably will take some classes at both to see which one gels with me. Either way, as a big advocate of TMA, I acknolwedge almost ALL schools don't develop techniques that work well against a non compliant adversary which is kind of important with respect to practical application of these waza.

bigWOWO is absolutely right on with his comment. I thought the video was a very solid, albeit low resolution, articulation of the merits of Sport Judo and BJJ. However, as you rightly point out - classical Kodokan Judo (pre WW2) was a very complete system of self-defense in addition to its other goals. The martial arts of "Ju" are based on the entire premise of no size limits, the smaller overcoming the larger through proper technique and use of energy. Additionally, it is very clear in the reading of all of Kano's old writings (Mind Over Muslce is on Amazon) that he strongly advocates the practice of atemi (striking). He makes it clear that randori (free training / sparring) is always done in a manner that is mindful of posture and positioning with respect to potential incoming strikes (even if not included in practice). Kano clearly states that to not do so takes Judo away from combat effectiveness and makes it simply a game. Good video and comment. Thanks!

Great topic! I would just argue that in a street fight or self defense situation you would normally not want to be on the ground, and, although you want to know what to do in the case you are taken to the ground (especially if there is more than one aggressor), this almost willingness to be on the ground is a great disadvantage of BJJ in terms of self defense. I believe it is important to be able to deal with striking, but I think a Judo practitioner would have a strong enough base to take a punch or two and, since these self defense "street fights" usually end up with people grappling, I tend to see Judo as a more effective system for self defense.

foxybrown2 well he doesn't carry it around because he made a huge effort to cover that, and all his other disgraces up, and paint himself as this frail old man who invented all these techniques and improved all these others because judo people just used strength. Because Jigoro Kano, Japanese man at 5"4 or whatever his height was, lifting buff old westerns was just using brute strength. I remember watching a video fo Jron Gracie explain how Helio 'improved' the cross choke. He said 'judo guys used to just use strength ad flail their arms out wide' and if you don't properly understsnd then you might watcha. Judo video and see them do that, but that's a different choke. In jiu jitsu people only do the reverse cross vhoke, not many do the half cross choke, and in the half cross choke you do flail your arms out sometimes depending on what kind of variation you're doing. But they don't tell you any of that. They dln't tell you how Helio ran away from Kimura and told everybody he was cambodian so he wouldn't fight him. Instead we all hear the epic story of frail old Helio who 'CHALLENGED' the 'greatest jujutsuka ever' just to test his skill and he had 'no intention of winning', we don't hear about the coward who tried to lick on Kimura's subordinates who were lowered ranked. We don't hear the story of how Helio got thrown around the mats lots in his fight with Kato, and we definitely don't hear about how Kato was actually beating Helio on the ground too and Helio just lucked out on a cross choke (which had they been on normal judo mats helio wouldn't have had the energy to do, and if done oj the streets he'd be dead) and how Kimura had to stop the fight before helio seriously damaged Kato's brain with e. We hear the story of how helio survived and defeated 'a judoka who is believed to be more skilled than Kimura' and how it was helio who stopped the fight realising kato was unconscious. We hear the story of the brazilians who took everyone on, not the story of the brazilians who got thrown around by the japanese so they decided instead of practicing their standup to instead just fight on WWE style canvas; nor the story of the brazilians who got leg locked by the ruassians and instead of deciding not to just sit on their arse and put their feet up, to just ban leg locks. We hear about the guys who defeated everyone who came their way; not of the guys who hand picked their opponents had had special rules. We hear about the guys who defeated the top wrestlers; not the guys who tried to avoid them but when unable to run decided to dictste what clothing each competitor could wear. There are lots more stories that we donmt hear about because BJj black belts learned their histlry from these people, and these people have now forgotten the real histlry themselves, and people like Joe Rogan don't know any of this stuff cos he's busy smoking dope trying to decide whether or not piss is stored in the balls and if the moon landing really happened. And it's even more amazing when you consider that a lot of these people cross train, and Rogan knows Judo Gene Labell personally, and yet doesn't see through the gracie lie that 'we invented everything' 'wait but this was in judo' 'oh no it was actually in old jujutsu, but we made it better' 'how' 'we just did, deal with it or we'll smash your brains out with a rod'

Many years ago there was a tournament in Japan to decide what the Police and military would be trained in. Judo and Boxing were chosen, and are still used today. Very thoughtful discussion. In my experience, it’s not either/or, it’s “and,” i.e. we should learn judo and BJJ (and karate, and boxing, and...etc.). IMHO, everyone should learn judo basics if, for no other reason, you learn how to fall safely, which is the best life skill I ever learned...never, ever got hurt in any fall (so far in 63 yrs!), whether flying off my motocross bike, skating, or just slipping on a snow-covered sidewalk. No head smacks, no arms broken, no tailbone fractures...falling is never scary, never painful because I’m not afraid to fall...and I know how automatically (muscle memory). Your point about judo throws’ force is spot on. A strong O-Soto-Gari would leave any opponent with a fractured skull and cracked sternum...there wouldn’t be any “ground game” to play. Plus, as you noted, judo grappling includes very strong choke/joint lock techniques, so no problem finishing on the ground. Your point about BJJ striking is valid...judo has no striking (hence my reco to study at least two disciplines). The only thing I wish you had touched on was the overall pacifist, peace-first philosophy of any martial art. The great instructors (and you seem in that class) always preach non-violence, to use your training only as a last resort, to talk/walk/run away first if you can, because fighting is really not smart and almost always unnecessary. Be prepared to defend, yes - but only if given no other option. Never, ever initiate an attack, never seek confrontation, never abuse your skills. In high school, I was the US Jr. Olympics silver medalist in the heavyweight division. No one ever even pretended they wanted to challenge me, but not because I was “too tough” (there’s always someone tougher!), but rather because I was humble, and kind, and never hurt anyone. I think the martial arts imbues students with a strong sense of confidence (based on abilities), which in turn produces good people, with a solid moral compass, and an inherent belief in fairness that precludes any desire to show off or otherwise “prove” how well one can fight. So while it’s interesting to debate which art is “better,” I think they are all excellent and encourage everyone to learn one. Or two😊

another thing people forget about judo. You don’t have to throw someone to damage them. Run them into a car or table / pull their head into a wall when you sweep their leg / move them side to side so their friends can’t get a good punch in etc. you can set up throws this way. People are way less likely to think about defence when they just had their ribs or head hit something heavy. And adding strikes when in a good position comes easy once you got grappling.

@@mariotanti4818 Hi Mario, I hope you're well? My comment referred to leg grabs such as double leg, single leg, firemans carry and many more as apposed to leg locks. The reason for highlighting this is that in 2011 the IJF banned leg grabs from competition as it was believed that more emphasis was being placed on easy 'takedowns' vs the big beautiful Ippon worthy throws. Additionally leg grabs were being used defensively after a weak score to technically 'win' the match but with little real action. This lead to some clubs not practicing these super effective techniques as they wouldn't be used in competition. However, as you mention Leg LOCKS etc. they were originally a part of Judo pre olympics as referenced in Mifune's book 'The Canon of Judo' ironwolf008.files.wordpress.com/2010/10/canon-of-judo-by-k-mifune.pdf and well as books by early practitioners such as Mikinosuki Kawaishi, Moshe Feldenkrais. So you are right to say it is currently not seen in modern competion Judo which is a shame, but is and should still be a part of Judo. Obviously arts such as Catch, BJJ, Sambo etc who embraced and developed leg locks have a deeper understanding of their application these days. Sorry its Sunday morning and I'm bored! :)

When Kano came up with Judo, he took what he deemed to be the best of all of the jutsu combat arts being practiced in Japan, and synthesized them into Judo. That is the Judo which the Gracie's learned from Maeda, and which they adapted. The original Judo has strikes (atemi), which are today preserved in the Katas. And the jujutsu locks and grappling self-defence moves (which Kano modified because he deemed them to be too dangerous), are also preserved in the Kata.

Kano really did not do too much modification in judo when he started his own art since he mastered the Japanese Jiu-Jitsu and other arts as well before he started judo. Because he will tell you that Judo is really not really gentle art because you dealing with getting slam to the ground and you dealing with strangles and choke holds and arm bars which is not a gentle at all when these techniques is performed on you in dojos and practices and get you prepare for certain situations. What it the means is to be gentle is that the art is made for everybody from youth all the way to the old can also practice judo since at that time of water Japan no child or really elder person was not able to fight in a war because they was too young or too old to fight and he also came up with techniques for either older person who's beyond years to use and they can pick up person up and slamming the ground without using too much strength which is the gentle Way not only that but know how to fall. He never changed the traditional way of jiu-jitsu because that was the most respect of art there was before there was a judo and the only reason why he came up with Judo because after the water Japan was over the government didn't need no need to practice judicial since it deals with weaponry and use ropes to tied up people or prisoners and all the other stuff. So years later people notice that the Japanese jiu-jitsu was dying that people was not practicing no more because of that so he came up another way to keep the jitsu alive as a art bycreated a art called judo. When he created Judo everybody in Japan was coming to his school because of his training and it was still getting the same benefits as what they was practicing of Japanese jiu jitsu and other grappling art at that time and still able to keep the traditions of that are alive when he formed judo. Judo was not created at that time to be a sport but it was created to be another form of self-defense martial arts that people all ages can use in a regular routine and they daily lives where without have to use sword and daggers and ropes since it wasn't no more war in Japan at that time. And when he went to Brazil at that time he talked to Brazilians judo and one of those Brazilians were the first generation of the Gracie family to learn the Japanese way of judo. When the first Gracie Master the art all he did is took up some of the things and he had a lot of ground fighting to it but took out a lot of throws with your supporting them made the art itself more effective because judo itself was dealing with a lot of throws I mean devastating throws that you slam somebody in the ground it's going to end the fight for them not good. Hey don't give me wrong I love Brazil because it teach you how to fight in the ground just in case if you ever have to fight somebody bigger than you they take you in the ground you know how to get out the situation but a downfall to positive is that they do not train you to fight multiple opponents like judo does because you must understand that jiu-jitsu before there was a judo was designed to fight multiple attacks and know how to fight standing up and a ground in which judo came in later and kept the Japanese jiu jitsu traditional alive true judo. Is some judo schools even kept wrist locks as a curricular for shut the fence purpose with the throws and ground fighting.

You wanna learn this body weight and wrestling techniques who can be street efficient and sport. Than learn Striking or improve your ground game... to finish with the self-defense material (leverage and keylock). For a Kid, learning Judo first will put time on his side, since he will grow up with it.... if you are an adult.. Judo will take longer but will put you really in shape.. for adults if you want ''faster results'' boxing might be a good start

My take is whichever you train in , if you want to apply it to self defense focus on 3 main things. 1) Avoid going to the ground if at all possible 2) If you fail at #1 get back up as soon as possible 3) Learn how to slam people onto the ground or into something hard . Untrained people don't know how to fall and there's no mats out in the real world. So lot of agreement from my end . I like to remind my students that to me , a "fight" is mutually agreed upon and both people are trying to get some sort of win. But self defense is not and the only goal is to survive and go home. You add in elements like knives or other assailants kicking you in the head or smashing you with a brick , the ground becomes a whole different situation. I think both have a lot to offer towards that as they come from the same roots .

I would say it was tweaked both for sport and for practicality. A lot of people seem to think that BJJ is just the sports version of Judo. It's not. It's refined itself down to the techniques which are the most effective and easy to master. It's true that some techniques are excluded from competitions but that's true of every martial art that has a sparing element.

Good points in the video! Original Kodokan Judo as "invented" by Kano also has kicks and punches (and was a form of Japanese Jiu Jitsu), similar to old BJJ. They were probably much more similar back in the days when Helio originally learned it. Judo lost a lot of its effective techniques when it became an Olympic sport. In a 1on1 match, BJJ wins over Judo if it goes to the ground, but in self-defense, you should consider the "floor as lava" with you having protective shoes. Going to the floor is the worst scenario as you never know whether the attacker has some friends around who will kick your head while you're on the ground.

On the Ground Older more Traditional Judo can take original japenese JJ But can also take or stalemate BJJ on the ground.. True, I feel GJJ is better for self defense than Judo since it was created to be self defense and that family actually kept putting out challanges to test thier art. Refining the style with real blood and science Judo is a best as well though and since they both have all the same techniques and THEY DO. In certain situations Judo is better than old B Jiu-jitsu And yes sport BJJ is why you see BJJ black belts getting pummeled in UFC.....they will mess most people up in a real-life fight but they have insanely bad habits thst make them vulnerable sometimes even from novice wild punches.

Good analysis 👍 id add that striking is part of judo too, thats why bjj has it, cuz its an offshoot of judo. And that nearly no old wrestling or fighting system goes to ground, becuz of pre-gun battlefields w multiple opponents w spears/swords. Going to ground is more civilised world 1v1 fighting. Even now if u go to some bad parts, everyone packs a hidden blade, so u typically dont want to go close up.

Great analysis , but I don't think you mentioned that Judo has ground work too in case you do go to the ground, but the goal is different. Not to mention that Judo is perhaps a 1/4 the price of BJJ to practice. So the ideal situation might be to practice Judo, and with the money you save, join a kick boxing gym as well, and you will have a good self defense platform.

ThePunisher129 I have no idea what wr is but yes. When a technique is removed from competition it ceases to get as much attention in practice, sometimes it even gets neglected entirely. Look at Kyokushin Karate, hand strikes to the head don't get used in their most popular competition so they get neglected in training because they use the same rules for sparring during training. WTF Taekwondo and Shotokan guys struggle with breaking a sustained barrage of attacks and struggle equally with people who walk through their attacks because they don't practice a continuous style in competition or in class. Boxing used to involve kicking and wrestling, they don't do that anymore. Royce Gracie spent time before getting submissions kicking the hell out of opponent's legs to prevent them lifting him and slamming his butt into the ground. Modern BJJ students don't, they don't have to, slamming gets you disqualified. Judo has strikes in its syllabus but your average Judoka can't kick above his belt without falling on his ass. Training follows competition. A better Judoka can deal with leg attacks because they face them in sparring which all too often uses the same rules as competition.
