Diesel is vilified in the passenger vehicle segment because Gadkari's sugar lobby can't blend ethanol into diesel fuel. Our whole economy still runs on diesel.

True. Totally agree. Diesel cars are good, unnecessary they are being made the villian
My biggest gripe about the current automakers is price to engine size, why am I paying 15-17 lakhs for a turbo charged Alto K10 engine put in a car that's clearly too big for that engine. I would rather see a 1.5L or a 2.0L engine car in that price range. The biggest culprits are VW / Skoda and Tata with their 1L 3 cylinder petrol engines in cars that cost well above 10 Lakh rupees. Biggest Con job in Indian automotive history. How is Mahindra able to a offer a powerful decent sized 2.0L engine in their cars at 15 - 17 Lakh rupees but VW and Tata can offer an engine only half that size for the same price.

Curious to know why you think VW is a culprit. They do offer lovely 1.5 turbo engine option for the people who want it.
Thoroughly enjoyed the podcast. It's a Shame that in India people buy sunroof cars because of the kids but that was never the purpose of sunroof in the first place, it's a safety hazard as well. One good thing that happened in the last few years is that Indians are more aware about safety and they are demanding a good safe car .

In India it's Sonroof and not sun roof
It's sad that the sunroof which is an unsafe feature is given priority over a basic safety feature like rear defogger and washer wiper
I disagree at 27:48 about US taking a binary decision. US has had several hybrids that too from a very long time. Let's not forget that Toyota Prius, corolla hybrid, RAV4 Hybrid and camry hybrid are extremely popular in the US even if we leave other cars aside. Moreover, we still have not seen plug-in hybrids come to mainstream in India Indians have very recently realised the benefits of Hybrids. Up until a few years ago the Camry was barely selling. It is seeing much better volumes at least where i live.
Does the value of car/market include taxes? I paid almost 50% tax+insurance on Indian car. We are25% of the US market(8% tax) by value because our indirect tax structure is punishing on basic “luxury” like transport.
Superbly summarised by Ravi Bhatia ji and well conducted by Hormazd. Fantastic job
Sun roof is basically, Also, a ‘Hole in the roof’ feature, makes it hard for buyers to avoid it, cause all Top models, where we have must have features like Start stop, seat height adjust, Auto IRVMs, Auto Climate controls, decent infotainment, etc, they come with this ‘Hole in the roof’ feature, which, when you avoid, you miss many must have features! Hope come with opting out Sunroof for all models!
Would love to see discussions on such topics going forward
Now the demand is again affected adversely by new policy of 10 yrs diesel n 15 yrs petrol- it has created tremendous confusion n many are waiting as what happens next especially out of NCR.Heavy focus n working on EV vehicles vis a vis lack of supporting infrastructure, including suitable roads besides charging facilities, expectations of further reduction in taxes on EVs. Diesel enthusiasts are left with very little or no choice as one spends near one Cr and becomes zero at the end of 10 th year.
The SUVs paraded in India are just hatchbacks with beefed up arches and fake inserts to make them look like something they are NOT. The height of insanity are the Sunroofs for sticking loved ones out of the Car!!! RIP Logic 😅
Gajendra chouhan talking so fluently in english and such in-depth knowledge of car sales! Respect !!
I hope car mfgs bring more sedans specially the premium mid range like Civic, Octavia, Corolla, Jetta, etc. with different fuel options specially strong hybrids like Honda's and Toyota's. But with nice designs, nowadays designs are getting weird by each generation irrespective of brand and price segment.
1:30 Depending on whether you classify the Tata punch as an 'suv' or a 'hatchback' the outcome changes.
Love good old journalism. Tired of Power Drift and Motorinc subjectivity.
This made my Saturday useful.
Wonderful program. Have started looking forward to weekends for the talk show.. One small comment is, I generally feel Hormaz should let the other person talk a lil bit more. Be it Sergis even...
The belly moving up to the 8-8.1/2 lakh rs from 5-6 lakh is not a good thing for the economy

Great episode..very insightful
Really enjoying the weekly podcast from AutocarIndia. Bring in more guests. The topics chosen are really good.
Loved the conversation and analysis
informative discussion. loved it. wish to see more such. thanks team autocar india.
I loved the detailed discussion with facts, but try to include or propose to our Government (as you are in a powerful space and your feedback accounts) that what policies will help Consumer to have a value for their money spent in Registration tax (28% - 45%), Insurance( 15% - 25%), Toll rates (only God knows the calculation rule) If our Government reduces these with a optimal rates, then our FY25 sales figures will move in increasing trend.
Great podcast!
The make or break in the Indian market is the "TAXES", Dadhagiri by the Govt will see prices going up plus the price gouging by OEM's. Cars are heavily taxed and literally taxes make up 40-50% of the vehicles on road price yet what we get back is miniscule compared to what we pay. For a car worth Rs 20L actual value is only Rs 10L

What’s the future of Skoda Slavia and VW Virtus ?? Numbers are just 3500 per month, both put together
Excellent
a very much helpful video
Pls keep doing morenof such educative podcasts
When will be gst deduction on hybrid cars 😢
Sun roof should be optional..never mandatory feature ...also safety features should be made similar and mandatory from basic to top.. safety features should never be optional.....btw, diesel polluted less than producing batteries . Not many know the number child labor involved in acquiring material for batteries in poor countries😢
Well done ❤
The government should provide tax incentives to hybrid cars in line with the incentives provided to EVs. That would make deeper penetration for hybrids till we have proper infrastructure for ev charging.
Surprised to see so much interruption by the host that became off putting. But definitely interesting subject.
Saturday morning treat, thank you
Boys ! Is Mr. Ravi the smartest voice on Indian Cars !!!
Eeco as taxi? Which state it's being used?
We need more sedans in the price bracket mentioned in the video
My question is that what’s the future of diesel vehicles like Fortuner in view of futuristic policies by government in near future ??
Jimny failed because of bhp and torque , not diesel..however diesel would be appreciated too
Hey, kudos on the podcast name!
Please do a similar episode for two wheelers... maybe Rishad could host it!
First comment: 🙂 love the conversation and insights of car buyers and trends. ..
I wish these podcasts are longer and cover more topics with each guest but all in all this is the step in the right direction.
Should have added a word about what % of the average value of the car is actually going to the government. My guess is about 35-40% of the total money paid by the consumer goes the various government departments.
Intent to buy vs paying to buy: DSG/ DCT
EV cars will fail eventually if the batteries are not replacable or chargeable at leat 80 percentage in 10 mins... Smart and strong Hybrid is the future of all cars
I reject a model if it has sunroof, wierd for modern generation

You're going to have to settle for base variants soon
Tata Safari is mpv isn't it ?
ICE vehicles are here to stay till EVs become affordable. At the end of the day it should not be forced to consider going electric.
Hello Sir, Thank you for the wonderful insights.. like to watch your podcast shows.. I have a question.. Currently I'm using 2017 Dzire Vxi covering 42,000kms.. Is it better to upgrade to the New Dzire or Swift with Z-Series engines from K-Series engines?
Whats the purpose of Sunroofs here in India ,the weather conditions are varied and harsh ??? In the hills people drive small cars😜😝😝
@mackisbrocklesnar

car sales are not driven by purpose. it is a fashion trend.
Japanese cars have good engines, tata for safety but unrealiable engines , and koreans for design and features
I have all the intent of owning a Hybrid. But no desire to pay extra for it 😁.
Sunroof not very necessary in a country like India -hot, humid and dust.
HERE IN INDIA, YOU CAN'T SELL WHAT YOU WANT TO, I WILL BUY ONLY WHAT FITS TO ME.
Resale value of car makes people buy more of these and the cycle continues
Nothing in car world (specifically tech info n all) is better than to hear out @Hormazd Sorabjee..❤ best pod cast ..
Some questions: 1. Did the CAR market jump up at the cost of 2-Wheeler market? That would somewhat show that people are actually indulging in CARs rather than just awaiting COVID to go away and then resuming purchase 2. How did the 2-Wheeler market perform? 3. If Interior, SunRoof, Safety is so paramount then how WagonR, Swift, Baleno are outselling everything else? I guess the three things are paramount only for a given niche, but given the economic parameters of our entire nation, most prefer something thats extremely economic to drive. I know people would bash Maruti's calling them TINCAN but the rock solid reliability, service cost, running cost and the frikking beautiful CLUTCH is something that most people feel the most. Heck even Hyundai and TATA could not make a CLUTCH thats even half the quality of a MARUTI and that's sad
French and US makers should accept defeat and leave India , they dont know how to make cars for Indian customers. And even if they do, they dont update it timely making the car an old relic for someone buying it few years after launch.
Just what I wanted to listen, thanks for uploading. SUV, Hatchback, MUV followed by sedan is what market favours looks like.
Eeco - Aam Aadmi's Vellfire
*SIR YOU ARE RIGHT--SITTING AT A HIGHER POSITION IS VERY IMPORTANT FOR THE DRIVER*
What Will Tata Motors Do to Encounter M&M New SUV 🤔
Design Innovation has been fairly limited in the sedan segment. Expect for Hyundai, no other brand has offered regular systematic updates to its Sedan. Poor roads are also one reason Indians are preferring SUVs over Sedans. Clearly with more innovation, there will be more takers for Sedans.
Sunroof is the most useless feature in cars for India. Ofcourse it is also compromising the safety of the vehicle. Foolish people allow kids to poke their heads out of it, which is illegal and very dangerous. It also reduces headroom inside the car. Instead of gimmicks, companies should make hybrid cars with lesser features
