Some features require better distance/angle/rotation tracking between the devices, and devices with Apple U1 chip (Ultra-Wide Band chip) less accurate like the newer U2 chip. Everything between iPhone 11 and Vision Pro had the U1 chip, and you need both device with U2 chip to enable some features. If they explain this, it's much less of a nightmare, users realize the reason why they can't get the same feature with M2 chip what other M2 device have, because it's depends on U1/U2 chips not on the CPU..

What I still can’t understand is why Apple still limits its pencil just to iPads. Why not just allow it to be used on an enhanced trackpad, for tasks like Freeform drawing on the desktop. Or as a complete wacom tablet alternative for illustrators. Perhaps then there would be even more reason for us to consider upgrading to the Pencil Pro.

The reason why not is bc for the same reason why you upgraded to the pro instead of they’re gonna make more pencils so you could just buy it and add that feature attached to it

An apple pencil with pressure sentivity and usb c charging would make things so muhc easier

I’m still using my iPad Pro 9.7 (2016) daily and the 1st Gen pencil is what I need to use for drawing. It is priced at $140 USD where I live.

My current and only iPad is the 12.9 Inch (2nd Generation) running 64 GB (Space Gray) Wifi + Cellular with the 1st Generation Apple Pencil. I’m still able to get all the latest updates. So for me, at least for now, there’s no need to switch to anything new. 1st generation Apple Pencil is a pain to charge, the cap coming off all the time is also a pain, but other than that I love it. I’m an artist and i don’t mind having to manually switch between colors and nodes etc on my artistry apps. Fine by me🤗🤗🤗🤗

What’s not to understand about why someone would get a gen 1? They have an older iPad and they need a replacement. My 8th gen only supports that one.

ass you said, I already have the gen 1 with a iPad 8, now I upgrade to iPad 10, because its the best option if you have to use pression sensitive, actually without waste more money reusing my current pencil, only needed bought a usb c adapter on AliExpress for 2 dollars and it works perfectly, even I can charge my pencil directly on the iPad without any cable or connected on the charger directly haha its better than the official adapter and cheaper.

Yes, well, we’ve seen how much Apple cares about us “frugal” “practical or “middle class” device owners. A company that prices its professional devices so largely above the average person’s price range, from $6000 desktops to $4000 macbooks to $1200 tablets and $1500 phones, not to mention, if you want a keyboard with your tablet, there’s another $3-400 plus $120 for the pencil, and $200 for the 2 year warranty/apple care, and $30-80 for the case, $35 per month for the news/apple tv/cloud which is over $400 and is really just for the icloud space and a little news. Then having to update each device every 3 to 4 years when they start lagging, falling apart, or become incompatible with products…. Just for a pro level tablet (if you saw what other companies offer you’d be horrified but once you are Apple you’re apple even though ive had to use a Samsung 8 since i lost my stupid iphone 13maxpro phone which is in my apartment so i refuse to spend $ on another) that would be about $2300. And significantly more if you want any memory. It’s just like how they just hot in trouble for introducing new versions of ios that wouldn’t download on older phones they knew that a lot of people were still using, thereby forcing them to get a new phone or deal with apps that don’t work, lag times, and decreased security. I still buy it but every time I do I feel a little dirty. And I certainly cannot afford more than the ipad air 5 i just grabbed from Amazon on an installment plan for memorial day ($549 256gb… pretty good. The only one that wasn’t just “ipad” ive ever had.)

I own a 1 and 2, I draw very basically but use the Pencil daily for notes, pdf edits, photo edits, etc---I just want the 2 to work with my 12.9 Pro Ipads (USBc). I have a Mini 5 so occasionally use the 1 to take notes on the Mini. So---good reason not to buy the M4 Ipad Pro--I am mostly concerned with having a 12.9" and don't really need what the M4 offers, M1 still working great.

For iPad Mini 6 you better to buy an older pencil, the newer pencil already use the Apple U2 chip (Ultra-Wide Band Chip), but the iPad Mini 6 (basically every device before Vision Pro) still only had Apple U1 chip, that is less accurate and also mussing some feature, so for the new features both of your device must have the U2 chip, U1 devices work better with U1 devices (technically U2 should work as an U1 too, it's compatible so it's still capable to send data with Air Drop between 2 devices with different chips). But on their home page you can check which one works with which models.

To me, it doesn’t make sense that the Apple USB-C Apple Pencil supports hover on the iPad Pro 2. Why have hover feature that doesn’t have pressure support? Yes, I know it’s not for drawing, but still. I’m sticking with the 1st gen Apple Pencil as long as I can. It gets everything done.

I'll probably buy the 10th gen ipad with the price drop now for art and i think the only one thats suits me is the 1st gen one and charging that seems like such a pain and inconvenience.

The first Apple Pencil is good for iPad Pros. The Gen 2 Pencil is good for newer iPads Pros. There was a shock when the first Pencil was replaced but people had calmed down when they found out that they could charge their pencil on their iPads. Then Apple opened up the Gen 1 Pencil to more iPads and the Gen2 for iPad Pros people were upset over the cost, Apple introduced a lower cost, basic Pencil which covered a multitude of iPads. Now, there's a new Pencil for a new series of iPads and history repeats itself. It is only good for users who want more choices and a limited amount of iPads because of the on devices charging and now this one has Find My on it so you won't misplace it. It is just an inflection point and next year, more iPads will be able to take the advantage.

So my Apple Pencil gen 1 won’t work with the new iPad Pro coming out?

I just bought the iPad Pro 13 M4 in space black with the black keyboard and Apple Pencil pro. I used my iPad Pro 5th generation 12.9 to reduce my cost of the new ipad. So I was wondering if I buy the iPad Air 13 M4 for my daughter would the iPad Pro Magic Keyboard fit that one as I know it won’t fit the new iPad Pro 13in 2024 just unsure if it would fit the iPad Air 13 M4 2024. I would like to give her my apple Magic Keyboard that I used for iPad Pro 12.9 I know the Apple Pencil 2nd generation won’t fit either the iPad Air or iPad Pro M4. It’s like you have to buy the newest things when the old ones are in perfect shape. Why doesn’t apple website allow you to buy the last iPad Pro or iPad Air once they put up there new line up?

@@TheTeza I got the 11 inch iPad Air M2 and the Apple Pencil Pro. For my needs it's more than enough. However, I'm very used to use devices with at least 120hz and I find it kinda frustrating to see the Air only have 60hz :( I'd say if you can spare the extra cash get the Air and the Pencil Pro. I'm sure those devices will be very compatible with the newest software features that will come later (those AI features, for example).

the apple pencil dock should have moved to the smaller portrait side. so pencil 2 and pencil pro would run on the new ipad air, m2 ipad pro m4 AND on older ipads AND older pencils would function on the ne iPads. But Apple did the other way

Obviously in a few years they will only sell the Apple Pencil usb-c and the Apple Pencil pro... One basic for those who only want a pencil and one pro for those who want more. The only reason they still sell the second gen is because of the mini, and when they update the mini it will only work with the usb-c/pro pencil. And the first Apple Pencil will soon disappear because why keep it, it's outdated.

I have a knock off from Amazon for $27, looks just like the original Apple Pencil. Does about 90% of the original.

How like Apple to give us extra tips and chargers in the first generation and take them away in the next generations. iPhone charger, anyone? And a question to got with this: I just got an ipencil 2 after using the first one for years. I have 3 or 4 tips for that. Are they interchangeable?

If you are coming from iPhone 6s, 7 or 8 / Plus or X, Then iPhone 11 is a great upgrade. This is the first iPhone besides Xs to have 4GB of ram 🐏 which is great for multitasking. I strongly recommend no less than 128GB. If you are coming from iPhone XR, don’t get 11. Trade in or Push to get a iPhone 12. It introduces MagSafe and 5G.

The fact that the pro pencil doesn’t work with the M1 Pro which came out in 2021 is a joke. Investors - ‘Tim our iPad sales have dropped we need people to buy more iPads!’ Tim- ‘Okay let’s make a new pro pencil which only the new lineup of iPads can use!’ Engineer - ‘But what about that magnetic strip, can’t they charge it on there? Tim - ‘Fk it, let’s move the camera so they can’t and will have to buy a new iPad’ RIP to all my m1 iPad Pro brethrens who only want it for procreate

I don't believe it's even compatible with any iPad they sell other than the cheapest one, but even then the usb c apple pencil makes more sense since it's cheaper and more convenient. Stupid decision on apple's part. Maybe they still sell it a lot to people with iPads that can only use that pencil

I honestly believe apple did two critical mistakes that led to this mess: 1- removing Pressure sensitivity for USB-C Apple Pencil. 2- Naming the new pencil as "Apple Pencil Pro", when it should've been the 3rd Generation, which would've made sense (I'll explain further below). The Apple Pencil 1st gen is pretty easy to understand in terms of compatibility. If you're ipad is- - A pro model with rounded edges - The "iPad" that's from 2018, and later (including 10th gen) - iPad Air & Mini from 2019 and later which have rounded edges. Then this is the pencil you should go for. The 2nd gen ipad follows a similar pattern. If your iPad is: - Flat edged ipad Pro/Air (before 2024) - Other Flat edged ipads excluding the default "iPad" The USB-C Apple Pencil is like the first generation pencil, but with USB-C. It honestly should've been named "Apple Pencil for USB-C (iPads)", because that is what it is. It's compatible with every USB-C iPad, which can also be identified by their flat edges. The only downside (an arbitrary one tbh) is that it lacks pressure sensitivity. It does have "pencil hover" which I'll come to a bit later... The Pencil Pro is only compatible with the latest ipad Pros and Airs, and vice-versa. Thus, its fitting that it's called the 3rd generation apple pencil. (It follows precedent set in 2018, when 2nd gen apple pencil was released alongside 2018 ipad pros (11" 1st gen, and 12.9" 3rd gen). ) - Apple Pencil Hover is supported if your ipad has M2 chip. So, that's like the previous iPad pro(12.9" 6th gen, and 11" 4th gen) , and the newly released ones. All in all, a mess that could've easily been avoided by apple if they resisted cutting costs, and putting "pro" in everything. I mean, this isn't the only thing they messed up, the whole mac configs is a mess, your average joe will have FOMO, because the Macbook Airs were just updated 8 weeks ago with the M3 (And M4 already released). Atleast its getting better compared to last year, we're getting better base storage.

What Apple should have done was trade in discount for new accessories. But Apple knows we will complain then give in and buy new accessories

Has anyone actually TESTED to see if 2nd gen doesn't work with the new iPads? The new air and the last pro models have the exact same chips, so it should still have full functionality except for charging (which can be fixed with a $14 dongle) Conversely the same should be true if you have an m2 pro model and you just want the new pencil. Either apple is lying or they really went out of their way to screw customers.
