Whernside walk from the Ribblehead Viaduct (Full Walk)

This Whernside circular walk from the Ribblehead viaduct in the Yorkshire Dales initially passes by the Ribblehead viaduct and then follows close to the Settle to Carlisle railway tracks, before climbing to reach the summit of Whernside, which affords wonderful panoramic views out to the sea, and along the Lakeland Fells.
Whernside together with Pen-y-ghent and Ingleborough, are collectively known as the Yorkshire Three Peaks and the 3 peaks route joining them is over 24 miles long and includes 1500 meters of climbing. The descent is down to Bruntscar before heading along pleasant tracks and fields along the base of Whernside to pass back out through the Ribblehead Viaduct.
We've set out where you can eat and drink nearby after the walk at the end of the video.

WALKING BOOTS Unless very wet or winter walking, my preference is boots/shoes without ankle support - that's not for everyone though. Having used fell running shoes for many years, I prefer the lightweight feel.
INOV-8 Trailfly Ultra G300 Max: New to me in 2022, now the choice for 70%+ of my walks. Training shoe cushioning, but fellshoe grip and stability - getting many best in test awards.

    Great content, myself and my family did this walk but in reverse of what you did up the steep side first about 2 years ago It was our first time and I was proud of myself as it was the first peek I had done . It was our first time

    Glad you enjoyed it and that was certainly a very good first peak to choose. I've rarely done it that way round as I quite like the extended view across to Ingleborough as you walk along the top, but doing it the way you did does save coming off down the steeper steps to Bruntscar. Hopefully you'll get to do Ingleborough and Pen-y-ghent if you haven't already...

    Excellent description. Although this route is pretty straight forward, it can be easy to get lost on some walks and other vidoes just gloss over the directions. I will be checking out some of your other videos.

    Yes - the paint on the outside has been getting flakier and flakier for quite a while! I went past a couple of days ago with workmen there, so something is currently happening. Hopefully they’ll do the same as they did at Garsdale a couple of years ago…

    Great video and terrific idea to show the full walk. I've done the walk up Whernside a few times. Always amazes me how gentle the climb is to get up to such a height. A great intro walk for people and very accessible, even if the descent down the other side can be a bit treacherous if a little wet

  • @walks4all

    @walks4all

    Thanks David. It does seem to feel a bit like that, that you get great height gain from relatively little effort. Uploading my Ingleborough from Clapham walk later tonight, and whilst lower than Whernside, the climb up onto Little Ingleborough always feel a lot harder than Whernside climbs...

    That’s not good, have you or are you ever going to do a video of the wharfedale 3 peaks I’d love to do that walk but I’m scared of getting lost I can’t read maps, your videos are very good for directions, I’m autistic it’s hard for me to join walking groups, though I’m new to the Y3P after doing it with a group then again alone, I’m going to Gaping Gill and Trow Gill Gorge soon with the help of your videos and I can do Whernside circular without having to go on the road for the last part now thanks very helpful 👍

    The Wharfedale 3 Peaks are on my list to do, but realistically it will be next summer. I've a few more in the Dales and Lancashire planned that I want to add next and then most of the winter will be ones in the Lakes. When I've done it though, I'll let you know...

    Glad you found them ok. Wycoller and Boulsworth are on my list to do, but the next few, when the sun comes back, will probably be up in the Lakes. I've never done all 3 as a loop so I'll have a look at that. Most of my Boulsworth walks have been from parking at Caldwell and my Wycoller ones have just been short loops up to the Atom...

    We did this hike in May this year and the weather wasn't the great that day. Started out with a drizzle at Ribblehead but the further up we got rain and it become quite windy. Not an issue as we had the correct gear to cope with it all. At the top the mist had rolled in. Coming back down the path the sun eventually came out. Despite the weather it was a enjoyable walk.

    I'm not sure - I assume there is as it is a campsite, but just not sure whether they are open to the passing public. They may have one associated with their cafe when its open, but last few times I been past, the cafe was shut, so I just used their vending machine in the barn for a drink.
