Where to start with Sitka Gear??

Here is a run down on getting started with Sitka Gear without having to throw out all your old hunting gear.
Maybe you only want a couple of pieces without breaking the bank. It can be done.

My first piece was a duck oven last year. That's when my life changed. Now I have almost everything I could want in marsh, EV2, subalpine. I have an assortment of hats, t shirts, hoodys. It's definitely worth the money if you get the pieces that you're going to use the most to keep you comfortable.

I just bought a duck oven a few weeks back, since I’ve also picked up the waders and and the Delta wading jacket, I duck hunt too many days to be using subpar gear.

I cant tell you how happy i am with my Sitka gear. I was military and deployed, so I qualified for a little off from Sitka. The Sitka was real quality stuff, I bought the Fanatic system, Hoody and the Jetstream. the zippers are good size, the jackets feel like someone from the designers factory actually wear and use it every day so they improve it. Tailor made for hunters. I bought the Fanatic system and am very happy with it so far. I have to say my only gripe is that the size does not lend itself to allot of layering, mabey just a thick first layer underneath. It didn't feel tight by any means. I bought an XL, I am not a big man but my arms are skinny and my chest is wide 44-45 . I wish they would just give just a tad more room in the chest. So if you get cold like me, I am glad I chose the more warmer option, and wear the jacket itself with a wool underlayer. Just as a note for comparison, I also bought from another brand K. I first got the K and immediatly was very surprised how I was not impressed with the quality vs high price , the size tightness fit just seemed very noisy and not durable for the high cost. It was very expensive and I didn't think I was getting my money worth for something made in China. To me, If you are going to be hiking up mountain passes and need something ultra ultra light and minimalistic, then that route might be the way to go. However, for just cool winter coats, I feel my Outdoor Reasurch down jacket I bought from REI is made better and is warmer than K, frankly. To me, for a whitetail hunter, there is no match, Sitka is the best for whitetail woods.

These are great videos. I watched all the review from the past couple years as I was figuring out my system. I couldn’t shoot my bow in December in Minnesota because I had so many layers on. Your videos helped me figure out what to wear to still be able to shoot cleanly. The gear is worth the money as it allowed me to maximize my time and comfort outdoors. Thank you for these thorough reviews!

Double comment: first two pieces I bought were the heavyweight bottoms and fanatic hoodie. Loved them, so I bought the stratus jacket and bibs. Layered with my old camo, I stay plenty warm in the Ohio December

The reason why sitka is so good is it keeps you safe and protected from the elements. Hypothermia and hyperthermia are killers when you are out in the woods. Its not just about the camo.

Exactly , the pattern has nothing to do with it. It’s designed to keep you comfortable (warm and safe) which keeps you in the field longer.

Have you noticed how weird the stratus in subalpine looks? Must be the fleece material.

As a waterfowl hunter, I started off with the Hudson Bibs and Jacket with my old base and mid layers underneath. Pricey starter pieces but well worth it!

Most of the time I do recommend the Hudson Jacket as 1 jacket for everything to serious duck hunters, but I didn't want to come out of the gate with this video recommending a $600+ jacket. Hahah But you got a great setup.

What pants in timber would you recommend for turkey hunting but also for early season waterfowl? Trying to get the best of both worlds from one pair, thanks.

If you had to pick between marsh and timber which would you recommend? Assuming you hunt swamps/timber as well as marshes.

  • @fieldseriesreview

If I’m picking one, Timber. Because when you hunt timber , you’re exposed and the camo really counts. When you hunt marsh or dry fields , you’re usually in a blind. But I have both

Would a core heavyweight zip shirt accomplish the same thing? Or would you still use the lightweight under the heavyweight?

Looking to add insulation piece to my system. I have the stratus jacket and bibs. Should I buy the Ambient jacket or the kelvin aero light jacket.

Honestly , they are both good. The Areolight is a little louder but a great layering piece. It does not come in EVII. But I think they are both good.

I use Gradient pants under everything if cold out. They are so warm , its like heavy sweet pants. If you wore them under the stratus you could be in 0 degree temps without a problem
