I’d like to add that while the original run by Doug Moench wrote off his multiple personalities at FIRST, the run quickly made it clear he had DID (there was no hint that it was actually Khonshu’s influence back then) and the theme of Marc losing his identity in the shuffle became an overarching theme throughout it.

Dissociative disorders were only introduced in the DSM in 1980, which is when the comic first came out - and medical journals of the time were still regularly misdiagnosing MPD and Borderline Personality Disorder as schizophrenia, something that continued for years. The Lemire run was my first Moon Knight book, and was pretty much my first comic book that I collected issue to issue (and can blame for causing a very expensive obsession with comics to manifest). it came in a time in my life where I was struggling mentally, and my issues seemed so insignificant next to Mark's that it helped me face them, and I'm in a better place for it. I highly recommend it as a starting point, and then going back to read from Huston's run. feels like flashbacks.

In addition to that, the new series is a perfect continuation of the Ellis/Shalvey run. While it keeps the tone and MK's characterization of the former, it develops him further while treating him and his condition with a lot of respect. I'm loving it. That said, I never read the Lemire run, the whole "was it all a dream?" thing bogged me down, given that MK is solidly introduced in the Marvel universe, but that's just me being annoying and I'm willing to give it a chance. The Jeff Lemire 2016 Moon Knight ignores his previous established trauma of killing innocent people and children during his mercenary career (which was the original cause for his DID in comic book canon). For those who never read a Moon Knight comic before or don't have a firm understanding of the character, the Jeff Lemire run is a good comic...... But it's not a good Moon Knight comic. Same with the Bendis and Max Bemis Moon Knights.

I personally think that the Moench and Sienkiewicz run is mostly interesting as a way to see Sienkiewicz's art evolve from the standard house style, to where he was when he started working in new mutants, which is one of the great comic runs of the era because of its art (compare issue 1 of moon knight to issue 29 to the demon bear saga in NM). Sienkiewicz is one of the greatest and most interesting artists in the medium, and Moon Knight has some of the things that make him great, while clearly holding back his unique style. (It is also really funny that the run where his art is more experimental is not the one starring a vigilante with DID but the one starring a bunch of teen superheroes)

Since Disney owns Marvel nowadays, I wouldn't bet on that. It is that old story, if someone who is/was a jerk wrote something, does that makes the story bad as well? Lovecraft for instance was pretty racist even for his time, does that means you shouldn't read his works? I think that we can distinguish the author from the work but if we actually should give money to someone like him is not as easy. The other guy that is far right is not the same thing, people do have right to their opinions and anyone can of course choose to not buy their comics but boycotting someone because you don't agree with their political standpoints is very different from not giving money to sexual predators. For that matter is Frank Miller rather far right as well but I haven't heard many comic fans want to boycott him for that (except maybe "Holy terror" but that one is so bad so there are better reasons not to buy it then Frank's political opinions). People tend to ignore these things if they like the author... Of course if the author politicize the comic things might be different.

I’m almost done with the 1980’s run and wow. It’s actually interesting to see how different Moon Knight is compared to the MCU’s version. This also got me wanting to see villains that would hopefully be in Season 2 of Moon Knight. Like I wanted to see Morpheus, Black Spectre and of course Bushman.

i'm not really a fan of moon knight as i find that the character is lacking consistency and proper identity to build new versions around, feel like it is the type of problem that leads to people falling in love with one depiction of the character only for the next edition to change to much from the last version that you end up losing interest or just get over all disappointed sooner or later as you no longer recognize the character anymore, but i will still give the upcoming show a chans, think it might be what the character needs to finally get a foundation to build him around in the future.

I just read the first couple Ellis issues… it’s a pretty hokey murder mystery. It’s cute, the art is good but not crazy about the story. Am I missing something? Gonna try Jeff Lemire’s run next. Lemire is usually great.

Nuts. Start your reading with the original 1980 run. It's the only good way to see how the character has evolved over the years and different creative teams, and it certainly introduces the mental health issues that later writers to and ran with. It's only 38 issues, and if you're also into it for the early and developing Sienkiewicz art you can just stop at #30 (although he did the covers till the end - some his best work IMO).

Man, it sucks that Warren Ellis turned out to be such a piece of shit. With Marvel having recently reprinted the Bendis run, the Lemire run and soon the Marvel Legacy run all in Complete Collection format it sucks the 2014 series most likely won’t get the same treatment because of him. Still, great vid as ever Drake!
