As a Chinese learner, I also advise to start with the radicals then learn whole characters, because the radicals are the building blocks of every Chinese character so memorising them first helps you almost instantly remember any Chinese character you will meet. When I began learning Chinese, I started directly learning whole characters without knowing about the radicals so it was much harder that way, thats why I'm still so bad at writing in Chinese.

I am a Chinese student in the US. I 100% agree with what you said! When I was a child, I start the characters with radicals first in school. That is 100% great advice. I am also learning English now by trying to remember more prefixes and suffixes so that I can identify unfamiliar words. You can understand 80% of Chinese words if you remember Chinese radicals well. left the 20%, cause most Chinese don't even recognize them. Chinese started with pictographs, so remember what they look like when you memorize the radicals! You will be good!

@@chengbowen8264 This is not the only reason I'm not that good at writing Chinese.I use Chinese keyboard with Pinyin input so when I have to write in Chinese by hand I still forget the characters because I didn't have exercised handwriting enough, even though now I know the method of learning Chinese characters. On the other hand, that's right.Sometimes I'm surprised that I can guess the correct meaning and pronunciation of a character based on its radicals even though I never learned it before. It helps a lot with reading.

@@dulmaria.d I am chinese and started learning chinese now. I use radicals to build more characters and memerise by practise writing. Try to remember the meaning of the radicals and what category of words are attached with it. i use the apps name Pleco. Pleco is very comprehensive except it dont provide grammars and sentences. I guess you need to invest in a good dictionary. I also search for chinese radicals in youtube. In addition i learn chinese online myself using youtube channels eg Richard Chinese, Everyday Chinese etc etc.

Totally agree on vocabulary and some grammar as very important first steps. One thing I would highly advise against is learning how to physically write Chinese words if you don’t find any joy in doing so. If you like it then more power to you. However it’s rare to write words in the time of online learning. I would instead recommend learning basic pinyin with the keyboard. It’s really useful and just takes repitition to become proficient.

Indeed, I think it can be a little overwhelming to try to learn so many aspects (listening, reading, speaking, writing, pinyin, tones...) at first, as I'm a beginner I'm focusing more on the reading and hearing parts, but I try to draw the characters on a simplified version (你 becomes a 1 followed by a T with three dashes, lol).

I grew up learning chinese and can't imagine actually learning from scratch DAMN. It's a lot more challenging when you're older. The way I learnt it when i was younger was flashcards and then textbooks. We would learn the basic words with pictures and then further learning by reading the sample texts in the textbooks. They sell packs of 100 flashcards in Popular(singapore-malaysia based) So yeah, downgrade to picutre books i guess. I find duolingo pretty useful and there's tons of apps. Word to the wise though, chinese is tricky because it isn't like english(duh) It doesn't have an alphabet that slides to together to make sounds-so theoretically you're never done with learning the first part of a language(pronouncing the word T..T) You have to learn each word's sound aka u have to search up every word you dont know and cant rely on context because its a 50/50 for pronounciation. Work hard... It's easier being surrounded by family/teachers who speak it, but yeah, I agree with finding a chat buddy. Some artists you can start off with(cpop) are Meng Jia, Luhan, IP, TFboys, Acrush.Pretty similar to kpop but you can branch out from there. 希望你们的学习会顺利,多多加油! 我来自新加坡,所以也不能说自己特别有掌握,比起中国人,还要多多尽一份力。就是说:我也在学习中文 kk I'm also still learning, the slang in China is something im not familiar with. And it's pretty obvious by my accent haha-or rather my lack of the sharp "china" accent.

There's a pinyin alphabet that Chinese school children learn before they learn characters. And pinyin is actually very iterative, once you learn the sounds, master the tones, I would say compared to English, there's a lot fewer sounds to practice. (Especially considering how many more homonyms are found in Chinese vs English.

I learn mandarin in school and even if most of my classmates are careless and dont care about learning it, I'm quite the opposite. Its feels...really rewarding when you can understand some mandarin you hear randomly. For example, there's a commercial on TV where a foreign couple learned a little bit of mandarin for their adopted daughter and the dad was like, "我是你的爸爸" and I was like BXUSISHAIB I UNDERSTOOD YOUUU 😅😅 Update: it’s 2 years later, and I’m a college freshmen! I decided to major in linguistics, with emphasis in Mandarin Chinese haha 我是大学生!我的专业是语言学,我学汉语 ☺️

I admire you to share your way to learn Mandarin. I am a Cantonese speaking Chinese in Hong Kong and I can also speak Mandarin. I can say to learn speaking Mandarin is quite different to learn written Chinese especially classic Chinese. Cantonese or south east Chinese has preference to understand classic Chinrse literature because southeast languages and dialects last much older than Mandarin almost two thousands years. By the way, I advise you learn traditional Chinese characters, of course, you may write in simplified characters. Since traditional characters let you more understand the meanings. Moreover, if you have interest, you may refer to the book of " six ways about Chinese character structure (六書説 lui Shu shuo), by 許慎 (Xiu Shen). The above saying is my experience to learn Chinese. I hope you understand my broken English.

At Uni we're using Colloquial Chinese (T'ung & Pollard), it's 2 books - one focuses on grammar with explanations on each speech pattern or grammar point (only Pinyin, no characters), and the other book is all about writing and reading and shows the stroke order, meaning and pinyin of each characters. The books reflect eachother, the speech patterns you see in the character book is explained in detail in the grammar book along with the pinyin for the characters. There's also dialogues, sketches, etc. It's a great set of books and our 老师 considers it the best text books available. It gave me a great foundation.

I am so amazed that you managed to learn those three languages at the same time(?). I also wanted to be like you because since I was a kid, I already love to learn foreign languages. But when I tried to study those three languages at the same time, I got confused. I think I should study them one by one. Now, I am focusing on Chinese language. But I am having a difficulty in writing Chinese characters. It's so hard. Really. It's not as easy as learning Hangeul haha. I really wanted to learn more and improve. I hope that someday, I can also communicate in Chinese confidently like you :) Jiayou!

An app that I find useful as well is DailyMandarin, you can write the word using pinyim or english and it teaches you how to draw the chinese character (with stroke order and everything).

I am currently learning Korean. Your videos have been very helpful, even though this a video about Chinese! Duo Lingo has helped me tremendously so far in helping me identify sentences ( Not advanced sentences, as Im an ABSOLUTE BEGINNER!) and help me with my pronunciation. I have also been using an app called Drops, which helped me learn Hangul and learn individual words. Anyways, I would like to say that you are doing a great job and keep it up!

I studied beginner korean course before I started studying mandarin. There are many korean words that are borrowed from chinese. It made my memozariation of many chinese words so much easier. The fact that not many foreigners study mandarin actually makes me motivated to learn it cuz I feel like it makes me unique or something.

I've been learning for about 5 months and have only done conversational (no writing!). I find that it's a lot less intimidating to start this way, as you can out off the characters for a bit, and when you do do them, you'll know exactly how to pronounce each word and thus will better be able to associate the character with the word!

+Carmelia Macpherson it depends on which one you're learning. Standard Mandarin used in mainland China is generally written in Simplified characters. Cantonese and Mandarin used in Taiwan is written in traditional. I use traditional because most people I talk to are from Taiwan, and the characters have much more meaning that's been taken away in simplified.
