I really enjoyed this overview. I moved to SE Portland from Eugene in 2009 to finish my degree program at PSU, and it’s been astonishing how Portland’s cityscape has evolved even since that time. In the mid-1990’s, there was no Pearl District, so your upscale Portland experience was had mostly in the Alphabet district (NW 23rd, Nob Hill). In those days, Hawthorne was *the* microcosm of hipsterhood before “hipster” was even a thing. SE Division was virtually a dead zone of old businesses and residential, and now it’s become very very hip. I’d say SE Division, SE Belmont, and SE Hawthorne are all very pivotal hubs for the SE Portland bourgeois. When I first moved to the Portland area, I lived in the Foster-Powell neighborhood. In 2009 it didn’t look all that great, but it was safe. Today I cannot vouch for its safety or cleanliness. From our house on SE 52nd, I would walk across Powell Blvd into the South Tabor neighborhoods and walk up Mt. Tabor. The walk was absolutely gorgeous, and the South Tabor neighborhoods are extremely beautiful and safe. Montavilla was actually a pretty nice neighborhood up until recently. Crime has slithered its way from SE 82nd Ave and into there, so I would watch for that. Northeast used to have a rough reputation until gentrification became a thing, and many of those neighborhoods improved. The neighborhoods east of the 205 in the Mt. Scott area are very hilly, wooded, and beautiful. Most of the homes up there are probably 45 years old and newer. My suggestion would be to steer clear of St. John’s. The increased crime, homeless encampments and recent shootings have made it scary. North Portland in general went from “improving” to “Yikes!” within just a couple short years.

I think this is a pretty decent overview but I feel you barely mentioned Goose Hollow as well as Council Crest. These areas are very expensive but very unique to Portland and its SW hills! I think mentioning the homeless problem we have would be beneficial to people looking to move here. Many homeless camps just get moved around so sometimes your neighborhood has more than you remember there being last week, and sometimes it's beautiful and feels very safe. I would also mention the walkability and bike-ability of these areas. Hawthorne is notorious for being faster to bike on than drive!

My son moved to Portland in Jan. 2022 and I've fallen in love with the city on my numerous visits there (son lives in Slabtown/Nob Hill). The homeless situation is heartbreaking and it does not help the image people have of the city in their minds (often without them ever visiting the city). Most of these kinds of videos are, understandably, made by real estate agents, but this is one of the better ones. It doesn't really touch on which neighborhoods have been gentrified in recent years, but that's also understandable, given the audience. I would encourage anyone considering moving to Portland to do some research about the area they're thinking of moving to, and about who used to live there before everything went up in value 200%.

Avoid Foster-Powell neighborhood. It is home to drug dealers, with criminal theft camps that never leave the vicinity of the drug source. On the other hand, if you want to live with oppressed campers, and really care for them like my neighbors do, this might be the best place for you. Drive around and take a look. There is a bike chop shop that you'll find on the side of Powell usually, which looks strange. It's been in operation for about 5 years now. It looks like a campsite, with dozens of expensive bikes taken apart for no apparent reason, sort of strewn about. The drug theft gangs are the worst threat in Foster-Powell. Your car WILL get stolen here, and cops are busy so emergencies are only life or death matters. If you like your stuff, avoid this part of SE Portland.

its relative. The 6+ months of rioting and rampant homelessness and boarded up businesses give the impression of a dangerous city. Its mostly just a drugged up dirty city, which is sad because it used to be super clean. We do have a lot of sex trafficking and our property crime is super high. That's because we're a drug hot spot. Portland decriminalized drugs so remember that when looking at stats. If the city doesn't recognize drug use as a crime, it won't show up on the feds list. Just saying. It is beautiful, but there are some draw backs. 1) within city limits, there is a surprising lack of quality hikes. Especially ones that aren't over taken by homeless / creeps. You need to drive about 1hr outside the city to get to a decent hike. Within the city its more about dog parks and bike trails. 2) When you get to your hike 1hr outside the city (besides Multnomah falls) most hikes will be around 6 miles one way. People here view hiking as an all day event, not just a few hours. 3) swimming is practically non-existent. The coast you're not swimming at. The rivers and lakes are cold af too from glacier melt / springs. Most rivers are rocky and slippery and most lakes are muddy grass. A sandy beach is actually fairly hard to come by. I've been here since 07 and have only been able to find maybe 3 legit swimming areas with a sady beach. And only 1 of them is family friendly. If you like swimming, Oregon isn't the place to move to. Bend, OR has some decent water activities but they get a ton of wet heavy snow. 4) seafood is surprisingly not very common here. Even at the coast is mediocre at best. Idk why that is. We have a huge coast line everyone should be eating seafood, but many people here dont. Crab maybe once in a while.....maybe Salmon.....thats about it. Its not a seafood paradise like Marine is. I had way more seafood growing up in Utica, NY than I do here. Quality here is surprisingly mediocre also. 5) Hiking, Camping, Fishing, and Hunting are all there is to do. There aren't any real theme parks. The museums are bland and expensive. The zoo and aquarium is small and disappointing. Touring rock bands hardly come here. Our food scene is quite good, but we're missing huge styles. Primarily in comfort food. BBQ just isn't a thing. Italian is considered "ethnic". And forget about soul food. Most of Portland food is really just white people food with fancy ingredients. There is NY style pizza here, not great, but does the job.....looking at around $50+ for a large pizza. My point is, if you want entertainment you won't really find it in Portland. We have SOME but people come here for the nature. 6) people aren't mean.....but def not hospitable. I'd say portlanders are just pretentious eco-terrorists with a personality solely based on identity politics and craft brews. So not really mean or rude, but if you don't fit that description you won't fit in. Outside of portland people are quite conservative and take on that identity. Middle ground / common sense people don't find themselves welcome in portland. 7) our weather is mild temperature wise. But not getting sun is a serious drag for me personally. Consider that into your move.
