Fletcher is about 500% more eloquent and composed than most ex-player pundits. Hopefully he stays in football after he hangs up his boots, either as a coach or in the media as he'd be a welcome voice.

Gregory Ho True. I think the best of Pogba is brought when he’s played in a 3 man midfield with a box to box midfielder and one who wins the ball and gets the ball up quickly. Or in a two man midfield with a kante type player.

2 years later and we've only just started playing him on the left wing

Fletcher was an unsung hero for us at united, he wasn't the guy that would score the winner but he helped us a lot and he worked his ass off in the middle of the pitch, legend for me!

And people still criticise Sir Alex for not playing Pogba at the time lool. 7 year later and the guy is still not disciplined enough to play in a midfiled 2, imagine when he was 18 or 19.

@@wayanterpiani3773 United were going for the league title, how many managers would throw in an 18 year old in midfield in those circumstances ? Don't forget, the Serie A is lot slower, Juve played with Pirlo, Vidal iand him in midfield and they were also head and shoulders above everyone else in the league, so much easier for him to adapt.

I've been seeing Fletcher in alot of media lately and I have to say I love the guy! Hes very intelligent, classy, and honest. He has great opinions and experience, and he is a very hard worker as a player; which gives him a very interesting and relatable perspective for viewers. I really hope he continues this career path and is a main man for football punditry.

The reason Pogba was on the bench and left for Juventus, is because there was no chance he would be played instead of Scholes. Fergie shouldnt have let him leave... People chirp Mourinho for letting DeBruyne and Salah leave, but Pogba was an Academy grad.... There goes the narrative..

People like me recognize that Sir Alex’s greatest failure was letting Pogba go... he doesn’t get a pass for that error. Jose let a lot of players go, who he probably shouldn’t have. Also include his current favorites Lukaku & Matic, with Mata (who was Chelsea’s player of the year the season before).

Cdn Poli realistically Pogba was not good enough looked good in Italy still yet to have a distinct position and a decent consistent run of games. Shouldn’t have been allowed to leave but wasn’t good enough and still isn’t disciplined enough

This is some of the best punditry I've seen from a guest in a long time. Fletcher is a joy as a pundit and should be invited on more often.

Pogbas best position is clearly Cam (Centre attack mid) but if you want to limit his talent, yep just stick him in CDM 😂🤦🏽‍♂️

I imagine them hanging on waiting for Fletch to say yeah, we'd have been embarrassed playing that anti-football... and then he comes out and says that they played like that often. Beautiful, absolutely beautiful.

This is just the usual unnecessary obsession over Pogba. He doesn’t deserve this attention to detail, he’s just been marketed very well. Maybe focus on our more underrated and under-appreciated players alike Herrera or Fellaini. Don’t just feed the media narrative.

What I found weird though is that in Juve he played in a 3 man midfield which brought out the best of him and got him into the team of the year at the age of 22. Now if we play a 3 man midfield he’ll be inconsistent. Perhaps he doesn’t have the right players around him...

Defensive playmaker that darts forward. Not creative or fluid enough to be the central passage of play, needs a pure playmaker with incredible work ethic next to him like Mata. Still a top midfielder despite his poor performance against Juve.

I think maybe I am wrong he wasn´t himself worse than at Old Trafford. Maybe human inside him won over player yesterday. Look he was playing there for the first time as non Juventus player and this affected him and his game. Also I noticed Juventus players controlled him well especially midfielders and defenders. At the end of the day he won free-kick for Mata and pushed defenders to the net for own goal alongside with Smalling.

When you here these players speak you question why you ever doubted them in the slightest. Great analysis! Edit.. unbelievable analysis😳

The Italians figured it out quickly and played him in, what they call, the "MEZZALA" role (see description below), similar to how Andres Iniesta played at Barcelona. Pogba is best when his defensive responsibilities are a bit less and he has runners around him, like he did for Juve (Marchisio, Vidal) and currently does for France (Kante, Matuidi), and when he has another midfielder who can dictate the tempo (Pirlo at Juve, various others for France). When he is asked to be just a runner or just a playmaker, he doesn't play his best because he isn't using all the tools he has, hence he looks average and overrated. Granted, it's on him to perform, but he needs a system that allows him the ability to do that. They have the pieces at Man United to do that between Matic, Herrera, Fred, and Pereira, they just need to find the right system and it looks like Jose might be doing that now, but he's gonna have to go with a 4-3-3 or 3-4-3 to bring out the best in the players he has. 4-2-3-1 isn't cutting it. Pogba, Matic, Herrera/Pereira, with Martial, Rashford, Lingard up top might do the trick. Martial and Rashford will be a bit more free, as will Pogba, since Lingard can drop into the middle to cover defensively. Seems simple. Quick description is: "we can conclude that the Mezzala will be an attacking minded central midfielder, that moves towards the flanks. Instead of keeping in the middle, the Mezzala will be moving towards the sides of the pitch trying to find space. The perfect example of a player in this player role would be Andres Iniesta. The Spanish midfielder always plays on a three-man midfield, but is always on the move finding free space on either sides of the pitch, trying to make the play and tries combinations with the wide midfielders."

THANK YOU. Only person in this whole comment section what summed it up perfectly. The problem at United is that he plays alongside Matić, who can't dictate play behind him and doesn't have the athleticism to bail himself out when he loses the ball and leaves gaps. Pereira coming in could give us some balance as he has great passing ability, is more comfortable on the ball and can release it quicker that Matić. Fred & Herrera can both be the runners in the squad, Mourinho has started selecting them recently so let's see if he's finally found the balance that United needs in their midfield.

He does best in 4-3-3 formations and 4-2-3-1

Pogba is a center mid fielder and a defensive midfielder

If Utd play aggressive with intent from the start rather than a waiting game and sort their defending out then I can see them challenge again, Right now after years of criticism of these players and the club they’re struggling with confidence. Hopefully this Juve result boosts a few players mindset about themselves and that they can compete at that level. Jose too has to let these players go. Game has moved on to a attacking game. It’s always been that way. Attack always wins the biggest prizes over and over again.

Best position for Paul Pogba is between the lines, little bit on the left side of Paulo Dybala position behind Cristiano Ronaldo, ahead of Miralem Pjanic and Blaide Matuidi. That is really the best position for Paul Pogba, question is when he will be availble to play on his best position? Probably not this winter, he will have to wait until next season.

I think pogba would be effective in a similar position to dele alli's at spurs

I love pogba but I really don't know where he should play. He can be an amazing cm because long balls are what he's best at but he's so lazy to ever come back to defend. I don't think he should play a cam but honestly if mourinho forces him to do his defensive duties he can be one of best cms in the world (provided he's consistent too )

Pogba plays better in 4-3-3 strategy. Because 3 forwards will run and give more options for him earlier so that he can make that magic pass faster. I believe, Maurinho is changing to 4-3-3 now. I really dont understand why Maurinho stop using 4-3-3. He build his whole career using 4-3-3.

Yes Pogba needs to play further up but he isn't a no. 10, he generally likes to play off the left and also likes to drop deep to receive the ball and drive forward from deep. What Pogba needs is freedom, and to give him that freedom we need two solid deep lying midfielders who can keep things ticking in the middle of the park and take away that responsibility from Pogba which often restricts him so he can simply focus on being a creative force. Fred is a decent player but I'm not quite sure he gives Pogba that freedom, in fact Fred himself is someone who tends to like to try things in midfield and sometimes we can't have two loose cannons in midfield, particularly not in big matches against big opposition, we needed someone who can be more disciplined and keep the ball better, someone like Rakitic for example (not saying we would have got him but just an example for the type of player) or Kroos.

i hope when hazard doesnt have a good game that sky ask whats his best position

Sir Alex saw it, Juve saw it, for chrissakes Warren Joyce and Darren Fletcher saw it and JOSE MAURINHO didn't. POGBA's best position was an attacking midfielder and Maurinho stubbornly put him more defensively. What a hatchet job by someone who is suppose to be a world class Manager and one of the two best of his generation. Another indication that Maurinho purposely sabotaged this United team and should be held to task for it.

I’m no expert but I reckon he would work wonders in a midfield three playing as a left sided mid (just like he did for juve) with limited defensive responsibility but the thing is mourinho plays 4231 and he doesn’t quite fit in there as good, mourinho should try playing him as a left sided attacking mid in 4231 , surely he’d play much better there rather as a defensive mid in 4231, then again where do u then play martial? In all fairness Man Utd are a mess and are lost, they need to bring back someone who fits in with the united philosophy which has been their calling card over the years, Sir Alex initially rejected the notion of mourinho becoming united manager, guess why? It’s because of his negative (albeit effective) football

Yet people say that Fergie was all about "attack attack attack". That's not true. People have warped memories of Fergie's style. It wasn't always attack. It was mostly counterattack in his celebrated reign. Fletcher was spot on. Jose is employing a similar strategy. But people keep forgetting that he has weaker personnel. The comparisons was always gonna be a facepalm.
