Where Do Trains Sleep at Night? | The Layover Yard Operations of the MBTA
On nearly every passenger railroad line, there is a last stop. And at almost every last stop there is a layover yard. Tune into the latest Boston By Rails video, where we learn where trains sleep at night.
Enjoy!

Meanwhile in Worcester it’s “have you ever been to a usually quiet rail yard and forced to get off your train there”😭
The sigh of midnight trains in empty stations.
please try visiting the Northeast corridor where they actually can go over 20 miles an hour!😃😂

Haha, fear not, I go there all the time! Check my yt shorts!
Man, I understand LED ditch lights but my hatred for ebells will never die. Real bells avoid that horrible menotiny the ebells do
the ebell transition from 0:28 to 0:32 goes hard
It would be interesting to see if you can get a tour of the train shed at the Alewife station.
1642’s bell sounds like it should be on the Conway scenic
Great job recording and explaining this procedure for us!

Hey, I think you should make a full video about railfanning. You have made one before, but you should make one again, like how to catch Special trains, when to know when the Readville switcher will depart, and etc. H

You should make a video about the CRRC Trains on the Red and Orange lines.
Hey man, love your channel. Probably, MBTA is focused on southcoastrail right now, but any updates on the Middleborough line extension to Buzzards Bay, year-round, and not only during the Cape Flyer season?

Unsure if thats happening or not…i would TOTALLY be for it tho
great vid! you should do one on the MBB coaches sometime, I’d love to learn more about them since they seem to be getting rare. i live on the south side and I don’t think I’ve seen one down here in quite some time

Great suggestion! Im actually working on a video right now about the cab cars of the MBTA, and itll include some stuff on the MBB’s. Keep an eye out later this fall!
As a conductor, MySelf, this is some great stuff. I work on freight, but I can't wait to start passenger service.

@@BostonByRails appreciate it!!! Thank you!!!
The contractor company i work for railworks did rail for mass coastal back in 2020 and i remember seeing these go by on the adjacent tracks and man they were flying we always had to stop and watch for them cause of the speed they were going it was a great time though we went across the cape cod canal bridge all the way down to Falmouth and btw derails are for safety they are used incase any machines or trains not supposed to be on that track doesn't slam into whats parked on there if you noticed the angle on the top is always pointing outward and you have to dig a hole in the ballast and put the points against a tie so it digs in and doesn't move and believe me ive seen our equipment accidentally hit a derail that wasn't down and they work but they must be thrown away after as per FRA rules
Quality video this is… More views it should have…
Thanks for this - I really enjoyed it.
Wow, excellent! Your videos get better and better -- when I was a kid I would have been an engineer!
Great job! Thank you.

do you ever film out here in Shirley area?
Are the locomotives refuled during the night?
They make the bell ring constantly just to annoy people...
Do the engineers live near Rockport or do they live close to Boston?

They live literally anywhere, which is pretty wild if you think about their morning commutes. Say one lives in New Hampshire (where I know multiple live), and has to drive 1.5 hours to rockport at like 5am, get the morning shift they were assigned to, and then go back in the afternoon. Railroad work certainly takes some commitments!
what double- or tripledraft trains do when they are going on layover yard?
Wait what camera do you use beside your phone
Who tf would try to steal a mf train 😭😭😭
My pfp is 1064 sitting in Rockport’s layover.
Where was the shot at 1:55 taken??

In the dog town woods on a giant boulder that overlooks the tracks and the babson reservoir!
This was nice, definitely not like in Thomas with the sheds. But now I have to ask, what do the crews do? I know they don't have cabins on the train, because I use the Stoughton and Middlebough lines myself. So do these crews start the day at Rockport, and finish the day there, and go sleep in their own beds in Rockport, or have secret air mattresses on the trains the public don't know about, or company cars at layover stations to drive home 40 minutes away?
So they don't use reverse whistle signals?
