Not Abandoned! Night Time MBTA and Amtrak Trains in Cambridge Ma | Grand Junction After Hours
The 2.6 mile rail line, which travels through the heart of Cambridge Massachusetts, is thought by many to be abandoned. However, at night, this dormant line comes alive with train action!

Wow that view from the bridge of the Boston skyline is absolutely stunning! Really awesome video 😃
Nighttime action, I'm sure all the fancy new apartments along the route love that!
Not from Boston but I have seen a train go across the bu bridge in person when I was in Boston in 2022. It was some sort of maintenance train thing idk. I was there for a month and that was the only time I saw anything on that bridge.
Imagine how useful this line would be as an actual revenue passenger line?
Awesome video! Spent alot of time in Boston in my early college years esp around BU. Always told the line was used but never was able to see it in action. I’ve walked along the bridge at night, it’s pretty cool. Thanks for sharing the footage!

Glad you enjoyed! And yea, its hard to find trains on that line. I spent 3 years trying before I really understood the patterns of the operations
Well done! This is actually the Grand Junction Running Track as it is designated NORAC Rule 97 track, not Rule 98 (Rule 98 being Other Than Main Track). Restricted Speed does apply. All movements either need verbal permission from the Dispatcher, or signal indication. Trains can follow each other as it's usually a directional authority (i.e. "ok West on the Grand Junction Running Track between Swift and Beacon Park") given by the Terminal Train Dispatcher.

WOW WOW WOW, That's all I can say I had no clue any of this happens! Loved seeing Jakwelline's Foamer Fun: Elevators, Escalators, and More there as well, I hope to catch some grand junction action soon!

Great video! I bet Retired Railfan Horn Guy is jealous.
Nice video 🔥
I remember seeing freight moves along the Grand Junction in the 60s and 70s. Does CSX run anything on it anymore unless PAR/Guilford killed it all off, or is it only used as a connector between the two terminals? This area once had some extensive freight operations and it's sad to see it all gone now. Polaroid used to get in tank cars of chemicals and other warehouses and companies got all kinds of goods. According to my mother, there used to be a Liquid Carbonic distributor in the area too. I always thought that this line would make a nice passenger loop between the north and south side with stops along the line for MIT and the other companies that have opened up in the area. It would mean building a wye near the old Beacon Yards along with double-tracking and signaling the branch.

I have known this for a long time. I did see a train on this back in 2013 and another one back in 2021.
YAYYYYY
That’s enough photos
🚂🚂🚂🚂
timers are also supposed to be based on track speeds. high speeds usually dictate longer wait times. they can be bypassed with a shunt on the mainline
Amazing video. You see todays switcher? it had 1135 LHF despite no ditchlights on that end.

People think that is abandoned? My local Santa Paula branch line with UP runs once a month

Ppht! Thats crazy! I think its just the appearance of the line going over a derelict looking rail bridge, and also the fact that its in the middle of a dense urban area, so tons of people see it every day but never see it with trains on it
Gotta love the BU bridge, prime smoke spot real estate, good times there trying to catch the Readville and knocking back Dr. McGillicuddy's (back when I still drank) and screaming obscenities at the passing crew teams
Why don’t the crossing lights work anymore? They used to..
Just an FYI you go to Google Maps you can follow along and see exactly where the line starts and stops. 14:49 MIT Nuclear Reactor Labatory. I believe at the MIT Pedestrian Crossing there is a small sign saying, "Private Railroad Crossing" and the same on the other side of the rail line. A legal thing, I guess.
A second BET is planned for SouthBay/SI building. curious to know what may happen to the grand junction
Great Video! Are all the Grand Junction comms on 161.415?

Any updates on EMD F40ph 1013?
This is actually the place where the North South Rail Link should go. Much cheaper to establish, and more resilient to coastal flooding.
Nice video.. where is 3.3 switch exactly . I know the BU Bridge and mass Ave crossing .. can you tell me this info so I may Railfan at this awesome location.. thanks
