I was wondering what happened to those cars, I've been looking at them for years. Glad one is being saved. You also answered my question why there is a short section of track next to track ten in North Station, where the crews rest.

I remember seeing these budds parked outside North Station when I ventured down to Boston from Canada to witness the last Dual Modes on the silver line before retirement... Glad to see at least one is escaping its time in purgatory

I was visiting my cousin in Needham when one of these went by above the field we were flying a kite in. That was probably 1968ish. I've never forgotten that day (obviously).

Great to meet you guys. This Summer for the first time ever Bostons MBTA Commuter trains are finally coming to the towns in South Massachusetts I grew up between. Fall River and New Bedford. MBTA calls this project “South Coast Rail”. The lines were supposed to open in late 2023. But not a lot of the stations were completed in time. So hopefully by summer service will start. Passenger trains from Fall River to Boston have been announced several times, but never came to fruition. So happy it’s finally happening. The 2 lines from Fall River and New Bedford will eventually join the current Middleborough/Lakeville line and continue North to Boston South Station.

I'm glad they moved this equipment before it becomes toast like the other Buddliner. Growing up, I used to ride these all the time from Bradford to Boston. These trains didn't terminate at Haverhill then and used to come down from New Hampshire and Maine in those days. Later when the Maine trains stopped, they terminated in Haverhill. Bradford used to have a freight yard then too and I used to see the small switcher move freight down the Georgetown Branch to Haverhill Paperboard. It's funny how we take things for granted. All of this is gone now. The yard is a parking lot and a couple of tracks and the branch is a rail trail.

Wow! What a story. Super cool how things have changed, especially around Bradford. I had no clue there was a yard there before

Were these the cars that the seat backs could be moved to face the other way? I was disappointed that couldn't be done anymore when I took a train a few years ago into Boston from Gloucester.

@@COBARHORSE1 Yes, they were! It is too bad the "T" got rid of those seats. I remember the conductor going along through the RDCs flipping the seats that no one was sitting in to the opposite direction for the return trip. Here's something that was told to me by my dad a number of years ago. To go back to the mid-1950s before I was born, my grandfather, uncle, dad, and piano teacher used to commute to Boston together from Bradford. The conductor would let them reverse one of the seats so they could sit together during the evening commute. At some point during the trip, he would take out a card table he had stored away for them to play together on the way home. In the 1970s, we moved to Andover. Living up the street from us was a retired B&M passenger train conductor. He was the same conductor that used to put out the table for them to play cards! Small world. Yeah, there was a nice little yard there in Bradford. A small switcher was stationed there and the old station had a dispatcher's office on the west side (towards Lawrence) of the station. I grew up on Front Street that overlooked the yard. My dad (a closet railfan) used to take me across the street to the white fence near the slope to watch the trains pass by. Growing up, we took the train into Boston and then the rest of the "T" elsewhere including to Cambridge where my grandmother lived and down to Children's Hospital on Longwood Avenue. When I was older, my dad used to take me to work with him and I used to look out the window and watch the city below. One day during a commute, we road on one of the rare Dallas PCC trolleys with a disabled rear driver's controls. I was quite young then and didn't realize the significance of that. It was this experience that hooked me to the rails. 🙂

What a great video. You have captured a very historical period of time. thank you for doing the chase, it was great to see a major piece of history once again running the rail (no matter how slow). If you don't already belong to you should get in touch with the Boston & Maine Railroad Historical Society. I would think they would be interested in the video. Once again Thank YOU FOR A GREAT VIDEO.

Nice video and great timing. Thanks for posting. That RDC has been there as long as I can remember. I remember when the Budds went in service back in the 50s. We used to ride them in town from Central Square on the Woburn Loop. One question - why was the train to Billerica leading with the caboose? Was that caboose set up as a cab car.

There recently was placed on display a Budd RDC, sitting on its own set of display tracks (just off of the actual R-O-W, now a Rail-Trail) at the Troy, NH Depot, it supposedly coming from the Vermont Railway (supposedly sat in storage at the very end of remaining Cheshire Branch trackage). Currently, this RDC appears to be a rough shape, albeit, better locking than this one.

Great video - great chase! Love those old Budd cars - glad they're going to be restoring/repurposing that one. The thing that caught my eye was the Pan Am 5963 at Anderson - I think I saw it running outbound from Boston on the Haverhill Line on Dec 28, 2023. I caught a loco running light as it was crossing the Dana Bridge over the Mystic River behind the Assembly Square Mall - definitely a Pan Am GE loco, just not sure if it was 5963. I was watching the river for birds, and only noticed it at the last moment. I got two blurry photos of it, but can't make out the numbers on the cab. Would Pan Am/CSX still be running any freight in and out of Boston?

Looks like you caught BO-1! Pan am serves the industrys in coke corks (hugh industrial complex behind encore casino in everett), on weekdays. The symbol BO-1, which ran in the afternoon, was actually abolished, and now « LA2 » is the name of the train that goes to boston (sadly, LA2 runs under the cover of darkness)
