I love the animated series. We got to see bigger roles for Uhura and Sulu (especially Uhura taking command in "Lorelei Signal") and the teaming of Spock, Sulu, and Uhura in "The Slaver Weapon." "Yesteryear" is one of the best episodes of Star Trek. Period. And I also like "Counter-Clock Incident" because of its introduction of Robert April.

Exactly. We were lucky they didn't do something like put some sort of cute wisecracking Scooby-Doo or Scrappy-Doo kind of alien or whatever in there they just kept it pretty much like the original show as though it had a bigger budget

Airdate order for TAS is also a bit on the arbitrary side, especially since airdates in Los Angeles are different than the rest of the country, due to George Takei running for a seat on the LA city council at the time, and the equal time rules at the time pushed those episodes that had Sulu until after the election. I recommend in order of production number.

I’ve always found it kinda weird how the episode with the Phylosians and Giant Spock tied its backstory into the Eugenics Wars. In a way it’s kind of nice but it also raises a whole host of other questions. How many rogue augments are there?! I also like the Pandronians. It’s such a simple concept in execution - they needed separate legs, body, and head cels for animation anyway. So just don’t follow the usual rules about aligning them!

From TAS we get Kirk's full middle name of Tiberius, Spock being bullied by other Vulcan kids, and the only episode in TOS or TAS without Kirk. The Slaver Weapon is one of my favourites because it features only Spock, Uhura and Sulu. Nimoy convinced the "suits" to get Nichols and Takei back for TAS instead of creating new characters and having Majel Barett and James Doohan take those voices to cut costs. He basically said that if they didn't come back, neither would he. His star power wasn't enough to bring Walter Koenig back as well, but I must admit I liked Arex a lot. My namesake M'Ress would probably have been the main Communications Officer in lieu of Uhura, but I'm glad they kept her as backup! 😊🐱💖

The irony of TNG-era Trek is that it presents a Federation or universe that is in some ways less advanced than what was presented in TOS-era Trek, which includes TAS and the movies. (I’m not including Discovery or SNW, only classic Trek in this specific discussion.). In the TOS-era, ships could go much farther faster. From the edge of our galaxy to the center of our galaxy at speeds that would certainly make Voyager envious. Data’s very existence as an android seems novel to the crew of the Enterprise-D even though the Enterprise crew of TOS encountered sentient androids numerous times without being all that shocked by it. Annoyed, yes, but not shocked. One was even built by an immortal human from Earth. And of course In TAS, the Enterprise had a new holodeck 100 years before it was the most incredible thing anyone had seen aboard the Enterprise-D. In truth, the writers of TNG (which frankly includes Roddenberry ironically enough) and then later VOY, are the ones who contradicted pre-existing canon that the Enterprise (and even a pre-NX ship named Valiant) could cover vast distances in a short time and it wasn’t considered strange.

It would include Apollo, Kulkukan, the Platonians, the aliens Chakotay encountered in the Voyager episode (I don't remember the name of it), and technically Flint, although he was an immortal human, not an alien. But he definitely influenced Earth history & culture.

8:25 - Please don't blame the animated series for having the Slaver Weapon take place near Beta Lyrae. That is where Larry Niven originally set his Known Space story The Soft Weapon, which this episode is adapted from... by Larry Niven. That actually is even weirder than it was in the animated series as space travel in the Known Space series is very much slower than warp speed is in the Star trek universe. I sometimes wonder if Larry Niven had any idea where Beta Lyrae actually was when he wrote the story in fact, as he had established Known Space to be only a few dozen light years in diameter. Therefore Beta Lyrae should have been *years* of travel from *anywhere* in human space at Quantum I velocity.

That's not his fault. That was Gene Roddenberry's vision, and studio execs lack of vision that cut their mission short. But TAS made up for it, so Roddenberry was vindicated in the end. And 60 plus years later, we see how much his vision still inspires others, with 10... 11 Trek series and 13 movies to date.

Love these fantastic attempts at giving us Trekkies a way to visualize Kirk's journeys in TOS and TAS. One of the best parts of Star Charts back in the day was charting the first year or so of NX-01's journey. Shame it didn't come out a few years later so the Delphic expanse would have had a better chance at being located.
