I'm one of those "old time" intersex and trans. And I've heard that argument about how "tough" we are compared to these "young fragile snowflakes" and how they all miss us. Thing is they don't miss us. They miss mistreating us and gaslighting us WITHOUT ANY CONSEQUENCES. We HAD to pretend like we weren't hurt. I HAD to smile or shrug away through sooo much horrific jokes and humiliating phrases. I was dying and bleeding inside, I cried so many nights so that nobody saw me not because I'm tough and I don't care about being talked down and made fun of. But because I needed to survive. How many queer people have committed suicide during those "good old times", does Dave care? Does Dave care that I never got to enjoy my childhood and my youth? Does Dave care that I was literally afraid to turn on the TV because I couldn't hear one more abuse? Does Dave care that every minute of every day was like walking on broken glass? Does Dave care that so many of us couldn't have careers despite being educated capable smart people? Does Dave care about all the raped, beaten to a pulp and murdered? Does Dave care about me going out to buy bread wandering if I'd make it to the store and back unhurt and alive? Does he care that I was surrounded by five angry men at the local grocery store simply because I was there buying groceries and Not One Person stood up for me. I had to fight five people for what?! And yet I never felt pissed off that Black people got rights. Or that cis women got rights. I CELEBRATED because I know how damn tough it is. Because I don't want anyone to go through the abuse I went through.

I had a conversation about this with my mom and it was like talking in circles. I’m queer and she’s straight, and I was explaining to her that there’s a level of intersection that gets ignored when you paint the LGBT community and the black community as two separate entities. It’s hard for me to believe people like Dave Chapelle care about ALL black people when the Black members of the LGBT community are largely ignored at best and at worst brutalized by their own community.

I often hear the statement that “black people can’t choose to be black” in response to advocating for equality and fair treatment of black LGBTQ people and when I respond to that with “if being black was a choice would it then justify the way we’re treated”? No one ever has an answer. When I remind them that black LGBTQ people are black, they looked puzzled. Black people have never had equality so we don’t know what it looks like. We only know what white people have and that’s what we want. We share their psychology the only difference is most of them are racist, and most of us are homophobic but both blindly defend our conditioned hate and wanna hold on to that one thing society tells us we’re right for being. White people grow up in a society that inadvertently tells them they’re right for being white. Black people grow up in a society that inadvertently tells them they’re right for being straight. A lot of black people I know get offended when I tell them there’s privilege in being straight, no different than the whites getting offended when I say there’s privilege in being white.

@@andregoree1037 Fine, he spent half the special talking about gay and trans people. And how can you separate the terms he used from their actual meanings? Being cisgender is not how he defined TERF. What he said was, he agrees with them because "gender is a fact." Which, from the TERF perspective, means trans women should not be considered women and therefore get the same considerations and legal protections. JK Rowling wrote a whole essay about it, and why trans women should not be allowed to use women's bathrooms. So for Dave to say he agrees with JK and team TERF, but also say the bathroom bill is "mean," shows he's either ignorant about JK and Team TERF's positions, or he's contradicting himself. Yes, he can think whatever the hell he wants. He should just know that his thoughts are rooted in ignorance and hatred, that's all. YES to everything. One thing that always amazes me is that Black people like Chapelle forget that there are also Black people within the lgbtq+ group and speak about them like they are a group of its own kind. Intersectionality is a thing! I personally think this lack of acknowledgment from cis Black people comes from all of the popular shows and movies within our community (madea, martin, etc) where men dressed in women’s clothing as a caricature for comedy. I do believe that those type of characters have led people in the real world to look at trans people and others as just that, a caricature to make fun of and not a real person. I truly sympathize with all those apart of the Black lgbtq+ who are literally fighting multiple battles at once from the outside and inside their own communities.

No. Dave is jealous of whiteness. Dave Chapelle will not want to wake up tomorrow and be Billy Porter, a man who did not gain a mainstream career until his 50s. I'm not even worried about Chapelle. Chapelle is a lost cause. Because he was considered transgressive 20 years ago, he and the people who love him believe he has earned the right to be regressive in 2020." That's it. He knows when he's making something dangerous, he's proved it. He just decided he would be okay with making that money off of our danger, off of all trans people's oppression, instead of his. I think what you wrote pretty much further push the nail to the head of this video essay title, "Where Dave Chappelle Meets Donald Trump." Trump might made a calculated move in referencing covid as the "China Virus" because he has more to gain to win the hearts of his supporters than the very small percentage of voting block that's Asian Americans. This is especially true where Asian Americans typically resides in urban cities and states that are heavily Blue. Therefore like how you mentioned Chappelle's majority based will keep him popular and rich due to the fact he doesn't need the LGBTQ community's numbers/support. And like Trump, he doesn't care what happens to the rise in violence of hate related crimes to the Asian community - too small of a fish to fry just like past history of Asians in this country. Somewhere, there's probably a Freakonimic's way of explaining your comment by using numbers.

@@andregoree1037 No it's not one comedian. Did I say it was? I think I was very clear. It's the accumulation of all of the incidents. It's never just one thing. Death by a million paper cuts. It's the continuous punching coming from everywhere and everyone. I haven't watched the special. I don't need to subject myself to that. The problem is that everyone else watched it and is influenced by it, and that has a reasonable chance of influencing whether or not I get to have rights, transition related healthcare, familial support, a job, etc. I know it's probably hard to understand why a special can hit like that even if you haven't watched it. Here's an analogy. Imagine someone shared an embarrassing video of you on social media. All of your friends watched it. Your parents watched it. Potential future employers watched it. The person who decides whether you get healthcare or not watched it. Everyone in your life, even random people on the street have watched it, and they recognize you when they pass you by. They're all laughing at you, judging you, often, but not always, to your face. In such a case, does it matter whether you watch the video yourself? It's going to have a significant impact on your ability to lead your life either way. If you complained about feeling targeted, and I were to tell you 'just don't watch the video', would that in any way be helpful advice? That's pretty much exactly what it feels like, and it's pretty much exactly the impact it has on trans people's lives. My doctor's opinion of me can change due to the transphobic media she consumes. This is not true for all trans people, but for many of us, it is obvious that we are trans when you see us out on the streets. Whether my future employer watches anti-trans media has a direct impact on whether or not I get to have a job and survive. Can you just try to understand that this constant barrage of anti-trans media (because it seems to be all conservatives can talk about these days, they've moved on from the gays to the transes), feels like a barrage of personal attacks on my life? The bodily dysphoria is not why I'm suicidal, and it's not why the majority of trans people are suicidal. A trans person is 13 times more likely to attempt suicide when they don't have a supportive environment than when they do. It's society that's killing us. Yeah dysphoria is horrible, but being unable to imagine a future for yourself, either at all, or in which you lead any kind of okay life, is a level of desperation that goes far beyond that. Dysphoria can in large part be fixed (if y'all would just stop gatekeeping us out of transition related healthcare), but I can't fix society. I guess I'm confused as to why you're trying to tell me what the reasons are for me being suicidal. Why do you think you have a better insight into what causes that than the trans people concerned? Did you perhaps not understand that I was talking about myself, an actual real life trans person? Are you just trying to tell me 'Well being transgender is a mental illness. They're suicidal because they're mentally ill. It's definitely not because of the oppression they face, and we definitely should not change anything.' Because that's how it comes across. But if you are just here to call me sensitive and tell me to get over myself then I guess all I can say to that is fuck you. I don't know, grow an empathy gene or something. I'm too tired of the constant punching to even argue with you. It's been enough.

Now imagine black trans people, a group Chappelle conveniently pretended doesn't exist. Nobody said that it was just trans people. I don't have the emotional bandwith to explain why blaming the trans community for trans suicides is beyond fucked up. That is the singular most fucked up thing he did. Not only did Chappelle use the 'I have a trans friend' excuse, he used her DEATH to bludgeon people like her with. It's disgusting. Not only that, according to Daphne's trans roommate, Chappelle was nowhere to be seen when Daphne was dealing with the backlash she received on his behalf, and he was nowhere to be seen after her death. And he thinks now he gets to use her as a shield for his transphobia? He thinks he gets to use her as an uno reverse card? It makes me sick to my stomach. If you really want to understand, watch the 'beyond cancelling Dave Chappelle' panel on Lumi Rue's channel. Khadija Mbowe is on it, as are Dahlia Bell and several other black queer folks. The reason I'm so tired of this shit is not even because of the special. The special is transphobic, yes, but it's not violently transphobic. I'm far more upset at the BBC platforming a terf who literally called for all transgender people to be lynched, in those exact words. Lily Cade. I'm upset at the fact that I'm STILL being gatekept out of any and all transition related healthcare. I'm upset at the bathroom bills, at the LGB alliance growing in influence, at notoriously transphobic Ben Shapiro consistently being the most watched media figure, and his anti-trans videos performing best of all, etcetera etcetera. I love your dress so much. 🤩 Also, I didnt chose to be gay. I just watched Titanic at 10yo and crushed on Kate, not Leo. There was nothing I could do about it: the heart wants what the heart wants. 🤷🏾‍♀️ And I KNOW trans people have as little power to "pick" their gender as I have to pick my skin colour and my sexual orientation. We are all just trying to make the most of who we are in a society set against who we are.

I am so confused as to why someone could just decide they were going to do a 60 minute special on something they know so little about. I literally only found out this man existed like 3 years ago and I really wish I hadn’t, so many people talk about the excellence of his comedy and I just don’t see it.

Missed these video essays! Thank you! One thing this made me of think of was that it’s not only that Chappelle ignores the existence of Black queer and trans folks, he assumes the homophobia and transphobia of cis het Black folks, and that’s disgusting to label a whole community as hateful.

It feels as if he is only here for himself. Rightfully losing his mind about White people using the n-word, while also "fighting" for his "right" to call gay people f*gg*ts. It's awful. Conveniently forgetting how Black LGBTQ+ people are oppressed in and out of the Black community. And he is the one doing the oppression.

There is a “lack of intersectionality” in LGBTQ culture. In simple terms, there are some LGBTQ people who will fight for LGBTQ-specific rights - e.g., same-sex marriage - but then fall short when it comes to other issues that affect LGBTQ people, like racism or sexism or economic inequality. And there have been many times when the LGBTQ community at large has failed its poor and non-white members, and that many LGBTQ people, particularly white gay men, have failed to recognize or ignored those failings. The LGBTQ community has frequently shown that despite being discriminated against for being gay or queer, its members are fully capable of discriminating
