"House of the Dragon is an American fantasy drama television series. A prequel to Game of Thrones (2011-2019), it is the second show in the franchise, created by George R. R. Martin and Ryan Condal for HBO. Both series are based on the A Song of Ice and Fire novels by Martin. Condal and Miguel Sapochnik are the showrunners. Based on parts of the novel Fire & Blood, the series is set about 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, and 172 years before the birth of Daenerys Targaryen. It portrays the beginning of the end of House Targaryen, the events leading up to and covering the Targaryen war of succession, known as the "Dance of the Dragons"

What’s even more confusing is Rhaena had the last dragon named Morning. She in the books took the dragon everywhere and the common folk actually loved her and they very much so took to her because of her dragon morning. However Rhaenerya and Daemons son Aegon the 3rd hated dragons and he is the SOLE reason the dragons died off. He told Rhaena to leave court because he hated dragons. It’s quite clear that backing Rhenayra was a gamble that didn’t pay off. Leading to the complete demise of the Velayrons upper status. High tide being sacked and burned wasn’t helpful either. It’s a classic example of how Corlys had it all the status wealth and influence. But he failed to be content. Instead he did everything in his power to get blood on the throne. Even when it wasn’t in House Velyarons interest to do so.

Also rhaenys was a Targaryen princess as well. That hard spot was mostly due to how close they were with viserys and the marriage between laenor and rhaenyera. The deleted scene with rhaenys and baela proved that they still would come after them baela knew this or was it rhaena I can’t remember but those girls were smart enough to know what was going to happen.

Would be interesting if, when Dany makes it to Westeros with her Dragons, she meets the young Lord of the Tides, and he perhaps bonds with say, Viserion. Although Dany may be weary of her child bonding with someone, she would be wise to note that while Aegon did take over Westeros with 3 Dragons, he also had his Sister-Wives as Dragonriders. So, with the young Velaryon bonded with one of her Dragons, the rise of the Valyrian families together will help bolster Dany's own claim to greatness as well.

I understand that the Velaryons are dark skinned Valyrians in the show for a more diverse cast, and this is explained with reference to the multi-ethnic nature of the Valyrian Freehold. But I know of no ethnicity in the World of Ice and Fire that has dark skin and white hair. What ethnicity are they supposed to be? "In House of the Dragon, the Velaryons are dark-skinned, owing to the multi-ethnic nature of the Valyrian Freehold" Is that really what they went with?
I think Aurane might end up wedding Asha Greyjoy, joining her longship fleet to his dromond fleet and leaving for Daenerys with Marwen the mage
In the main story, Daenerys knows about her family’s history. So she must know about the Velaryons. Has she tried to contact them?
I dont think the Mutli ethnic state of the Valyrian freehold is enough to justify making them Velaryons black. Sure it could come in but stay for that long? not to mention in the show it doesnt seem to go away. In the show Laena and Laenor are mixed and then Laena and Daemon has children but those kids look even more black than Laena when it should be the complete opposite. The Valyrians is an Ethnic group whos culture and language spread all over essos but that doesnt mean that people who dont look like them apart from their silver blond hair are valyrians. This comment is longer than it needs to be because when it comes down to it the choice was for diversity reasons. I was worried like many others but i think the Velaryon cast did their roles justice.

HBO made them black so they could have black people riding dragons, it was 100% political and makes no sense from a lore and worldbuilding PoV, is over, is fine, you can say that diversity and job opportunities are more important than lore, and that is a fair argument, but pretending it makes sense is a bad and dumb cope. The targs were already half valyrian, aegon and his sisters had a velaryon mother. Valyrian is an ethnicity, and in the world of ice and fire they are their own RACE, not only a nationality ot a citizenship, but a RACE different from what we would call "caucasoids", Valyrians were supremacists that practiced eugenics and experimented on themselves.

*"In house of the Dragon the Velaryons are dark skinned owing to the multi-ethnic nature of the Valerian freehold."* LoL No, captain cope alot, there was no "multi ethnic nature" in Valeria besides slave and foreigners. This is clear by the original story pointing out constantly what *Valerian* ( not even just -Targaryen- ) features in _Essos_ and _Westros_ look like. Those features are even said to be more valuable because of association with the former hierarchy astblisted by the Dragon Lords who ruled most of the know world. So what they "own their dark skin color" to are producers who injected what they call diversity (aka virtue signaling) into the story dispite the genetic and story logic previous established many times over. You'd have to be overdosing on cope to begin an attempt at making sense of just a single family being dark skinned on a continent of pale skinned people even after living there for centuries by the time of The Dance of Dragons. Not that that last part matters because they wouldn't have had darker skin to begin with.

The valyrians are described as fair skin almost albino like traits with straight platinum/silver blond hair and violet eyes, this includes the Targaryans, Celtigars and Velaryons. In the books the Velaryons that exist in the events of GOT are described like this. Sadly this was just a mere diversity grab.

I don't give a sh*t about woke stuff, but I absolutely love that they decided to go a black route with house velaryon. Really makes it hard to say someone isn't a bastard

To bad they halfassed it. The mother of Jaehaerys was a Velaryon, all the Targaryens (and Baratheons) in this generation should have been mixed. That's the problem with it not the "woke stuff", they way they done it makes it look like the Velaryons spontaneously turned black after the birth of Jaehaerys, or the Targaryens and Valeryons didn't intermarry before. With a family so inbred you can't handwave this.
You stated corlys tore down Driftmark which is just not true. He built high tide as a separate castle which eventually got sacked. I like your narrative style but Cmon you gotta get your facts right if you read Fire and Blood youd have known that mate

Thanks for letting me know. We all slip up every now and then
They were present but not "black"
But in Fire & Blood one of the Targaryen kings (I think jaeharyes Targaryen) says his daughter can sit in the black cells with her black friends-referring to the Valaryons who befriended Sara Targaryen (I think)-the rebellious daughter that ended up whoring & ruling in one of the free cities.
Besides the fact that in the books the Velaryons are as pale as the Targaryens, it makes no sense for the Velaryons to be black in the show when you know that King Viserys I, Queen Aemma and Princess Rhaenys shared the same great grandmother, Alyssa Velaryon, yet the actors who played them were as white as all the other Targs.

Did it not occur to you that Corlys’s mother may have been a summer islander? The show doesn’t say the Velaryons have always been dark skinned. Just the recent generations

@@homerc9101 where does it say she isn’t? Also, they’re literally a shipping and trading dynasty and one of Corlys’s first voyages was literally to the summer isles as a child. Clearly the Valyrians mix with other races since brown Ben plum is a descendant of that family. Aegon VI also had a summer island lover. The Velaryons had already married several outsiders by this point so by your logic their ‘stock’ was already devalued. By the time of Corlys’s birth the Velaryons hadn’t married into the Targ dynasty for generations, the last one being Corlys’s great aunt Alyssa, and there were enough legitimate Targ males for every female to marry a brother or cousin so why would they be focused on that when they could focus on trade relations since trade relations are what made Corlys so rich?

Well if u go by the show it seems during that 170 year period they purged all black people from Westeros.
Even if you HAVE to make the velaryons “Black”…..the lightening of the features of the Valurians due to the blood magic (hair so blonde it’s silver, eyes so blue their purple, and pale skin)…there are “black” people with very light skin who aren’t mulattos that they could’ve cast in this show to make it look more believable….just sayin’
