Cause he has written and rewritten it over 30yrs. My friend worked in a publishing house and he used to bring me a box of books they would just send to recycling. It had tons and tons of GRRM stories and most of them were the same exact story over and over just changed differently every time. Thats why his current next book is takin so long. He actually has no idea where to go with it cause he hasnt gotten a chance to rewrite it a dozen times

Maybe they decided to fuck it and lay low forever, Wakandaing about by leaking Valyrian steel in the form of weapons or in case of Euron, armour, for anything else the world offers. Perhaps Aurion even had advanced magical agriculture in there, planting mushrooms and raising protein-rich insects for food. The reason why the Lannister guy trying to look for Brightroar is gone is because they became the permanent guests of Valyria and are bribed with women to prevent total inbreeding of Valyria. Others? They ate them all. Tastes like pork. Why they don't act in the three hundred years of Westerosi Targaryen rule? Because they are sick of conquering and amassing debts to run everything. Maybe they return to sheep and dragon herding, waiting for a day when the Iron Bank don't charge interest rates to space.

House Velaryon is technically descended from the Valyrians as well.

I think we need to take a step back and use Occam's Razor here instead of spinning wild mystery tales. Why attribute the eruption of these (probably connected) volcanoes to magic eggs and a cult of death-worshipping assassins using some magic artefacts to cause a cataclysm when the is a much simpler and more realistic explanation: A tired slave lost control of the cart he was pulling through the mines, and the cargo - half a dozen large barrels of vinegar - rolled downhill where they crashed into the well stocked baking soda depot.

The only TSOIAF channel I've found that provides actual knowledge about the lore and involves logic into the speculations, instead of taking the craziest stories and trying to prove them. A lot of awesome content here, based mostly on books, not only from the saga, no stupid clickbaits, no ridiculous theories based on random sentences or pure coincidences, no frickin' "Season 8 Hot-Pie-killing-The-Night-King-With-A-Kitchen-Knife FINALLY PROVEN" kind of bullshit. @@fildariusv7045 I'd assume any Valyrian Armour found would have to be reforged to fit some random guy, and weirdly you can even reforge Valyrian swords (so I guess their power doesn't stem from any smithing techniques), so he could've had his armour made from a dozen collected Valyrian steel swords. Still, seems likely he somehow managed to plunder the ruins no one survives. Probably skinchanged into some old geese to grab the plates or something. ;)

H.P. Lovecraft also wrote a short story about a great civilization that suddenly fell because they pissed off some eldritch being, called "the Doom that Came to Sarnath". Not only it is called "the Doom", people of Sarnath were also originally shepherds, just like Valyrians. Reading Barth's record of Aerea Targaryen in Fire and Blood convinced me that something Lovecraftian was going on with Valyria. So anyways I think it's safe to say something similar happened with Valyria. The Valyrians, consumed by their arrogance and greed, used too much magic and dug too deep in the Fourteen Flames (like the Dwarves of Moria from LOTR). After all the mages controlling Fourteen Flames got killed due to Dragonlords backstabbing each other, they woke up some unspeakable eldritch horror and brought doom upon them.

Also for those wondering, The Targaryens weren't technically the only dragonlords to survive the doom. Aurion was a dragonlord in Qohor who survived the doom, afterwards he raised a Qohorik host of 30 thousand men and declared himself the first Emperor of Valyria, he marched to the capitol but he and his host were never seen or heard from again. There were also several Dragonlords that survived the doom along with their dragons in Lys and Tyrosh, but they and their dragons were quickly killed when people found out about the doom.

When Jorah and Tyrion went through Valyria, can imagine them passing by a pedestal with a valyrian inscription that translates to "Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!"

Even before seeing this video, I always figured that Valyria was to Westeros was what Rome was to Western Europe. It was the world-spanning empire, that gave way to the dark ages after it fell. And I figured that the Doom was basically a huge volcanic cataclysm, that became mythologized as a magical, supernatural event by descendants of the survivors and their contemporaries.

The way the Valyrians are written is very interesting and mysterious, a combination of Ancient Rome and Atlantis with some dragons thrown in for good measure. It just goes to show how powerful the Valyrians really were when you consider that the Targaryens; a tiny shard of that ancient and powerful empire; would go on to conquer an entire continent by themselves once the rest had all perished.

I always figured that the Valyrians had assassinated each other and caused the doom that way, but I never considered the Lannister gold angle or the Targaryen one. Quite interesting.

Targaryens have always had the ability to dream prophecies, and it is pretty much established as true if wonky, so I don't think they made that part up.

I mean, I technically have the ability to go sky-diving, but I never have. I could say that I did though. Just because they can have prophetic dreams doesn't necessarily mean that someone did in that instance. I mean, obviously it's plausible, but that definitely doesn't serve as very strong evidence that it actually happened, it seems to me.

The story of the Targ girl (aenas or something) who rides balerion to Valyria and comes back with a fever that turns her blood into worms with faces is the best clue. Septon Barth, the biggest genius in Westeros history, thought they used blood magic to mutate dragons and other dark magics. They did it themselves

I always assumed the prophecy about Lannister gold referred to the sack of King's Landing by Tywin in Roberts Rebellion, leading to the end of the Targaryen dynasty, the last of the dragonlords. The actual reference to gold is more metaphorical, what with Casterly Rock's power coming from gold. Then again, whenever you speculate about what is and isn't true about Valyria, Euron shaky ground.

They use it to pay back the iron coin. When Arya's in the House of Black and White, they offer to make her a rich and beautiful noble who would want naught in life. Getting there requires money. Also, we see that sometimes, people will pay for their services not with money, but with their own life. If they want the death of someone rich and important, the faceless men will need more resources than for, say, some random merchant. Resources that are bought with gold.

Well the liklihood is that the Valyria expanded and took over what is now called Valyria. So its not like they named the capital after the kingdom but the other way around.

Area Targeryen stole balerion and it is believed he took her to valyria. If you haven't read fire and blood i highly suggest it. She came back about a year later with creatures under her skin and balerion was injured as well. Its all very interesting its my favorite part of the book

Mr. Alt Shift's insightful work is always stimulating and helpful. I've read the books, once, but there are so many layers of detail to Mr. Martin's books that it's very easy to get confused and lose track. I'll be glad when the books and the TV series are done. I'll be able to quit obsessing and get on with my life.

Lannister gold was a unique isotope that, combined with valerian gold, caused a fissile reaction causing it to go supercritical. Just a thought.

I so wish that there was a volume that talked about how the Doom of Valyria came about, what it was, etc. As well as a separate one about the First Men and the Children of the Forest and all of that!

On the tin foil part, it's possible that Daenys' dream wasn't fake, but that the Targaryen's did cause the doom by wiping out the sorcerers. They seem to be a family that is not only possessed of prophetic dreams, they also all seem personally determined to fulfill them. It's a leap but maybe they decided that Daenys' dream was a sign that they were supposed to be the only Dragon Lords in the world, and took it upon themselves to make it so.

The "Doom" of Valyria is the magical verson of a nuclear fallout like pripyat or fukushima, the Valyrians were so advanced in alchemy and magic that this is what George is trying to embody in an ancient form.

Some where i read that Targaryens were one of many lasser families of Valyria and they avoided been destroyed because of a vision. Can't imagine how powerful the top families would be. I'm thinking maybe in fire bending.

There was no "vision" lol....it was more likely something far more mundane, such as they had a falling out with the powers that be and had to flee into exile. Then, after the doom their family lore became "I told you so because I am smarter than you" and negelected to bit about leaving in the dead of night to avoid the soldiers sent to arrest them. Local history has a tendency to twist facts to make the teller appear wiser or stronger than they really were at the time, and since there is no one to say otherwise, it becomes "fact".

I doubt the Targaryens pulled the trigger. It took generations for them to dominate, and only then it was in Westeros. Why didn't they take over the rest of the world? And it's an awfully big sacrifice in the hope of having a ruling dynasty later in the future. The people who gave up Valyria weren't the ones to benefit from its destruction, and people rarely make selfish plans that don't benefit themselves in life.

Clayburn Griffin Maybe instead of leaving on their own the targaeryans were banished from Valyria? After all having a name like Aenar “The Exile” just screams banishment. Maybe as revenge they paid the facelessmen to go around killing the mages who controlled the fourteen flames in order to burn the capital to a crisp. After that everyone who knew the truth of what really happened (besides the targaeryans) were and the targaeryans were left to make up their own story.

@@tooslow4065 Velaryons and Celtigar where apparently even minor than the Targaryens since they didn't have dragons until some years latter after the conquest od Westeros. So it's believed that the Velaryons and Celtigars came to Westeros with the Targaryens, being a sworn house to them even before they left Valyria

Great video as always. If you're looking for other theories from GoT, I have one: The Red God is actually the Night king tricking everyone to help him and weaken Westeros. In the show at least everytime someone has a vision, it ends up killing an army of his opposition or sends people and things to him, ie the dragon. Just a theory.

A TV show or book on the old politics of Valaryia would be really interesting.

A good reference to the doom of Pompei in 79 d.C. (another similarity with Rome) or even to the krakatoa eruption that occured in 536 rather than 1883 (the 536 one was so bad the caused one sort of long night because of Volcano's debris polluting atmosphere for 2 years all around the world)

I prefer to believe a sort of combination-of-the-above theory, where the Doom was caused by the murder of prominent sorcerers who kept the Fourteen Flames "sedated" (for lack of a better word) by the Lannister gold-funded Faceless Men, but that the Faceless Men were themselves the originators of the plot. My thinking is that the Faceless Men are assassins for hire, and by tradition can only take lives when paid to (in gold or otherwise). Meaning that as much as they wanted to destroy Valyria, they couldn't just do it of their own volition. So instead, they spent a century or more hatching a conspiracy in which their agents became the advisers of dragonlords and other nobles, influencing them into waging war on each other and suggesting the Faceless Men as the intermediaries by which the killings could be done. Perhaps one of the less-wealthy dragonlords was persuaded early on to ignore the Lannister Gold prophecy and meet with representatives from Casterly Rock, selling them Brightroar in order to finance his vendettas.

Sorry but that doesn’t make any sense. In what world slaves in burning mines have the time for an intricate political conspiracy against their dragonriders overlords ? Why would the slaves respect the modus operandi of a not yet founded guild of assassins ? They considered killing another slave mercy, that’s how powerless and desperate they were. Slaves killing 14 or so mages to provoke a cataclysm, in a murder-suicide plan is more plausible than them slowly playing the Game of Thrones like some nobles in court.

I would love a Dunk and Egg style short that takes place over the course of a day or two and is from the perspective of a person who is one of the last to die in the Doom. Maybe they escaped on a dragon and got knocked of the sky, survived, and then, from the pollution or just straight up murder, that's how the story ends.

Fantastic vid! I always knew the sorcerers were assasinated by the faceless men but never knew who would’ve paid them. I thought they would’ve just done it because of the slavery. However saying the targs did it makes a lot of sense

Curious thing, Jamie Lannister killed the last Targaryen king and the passion that Aerys felt for Joanna Lannister also contributed to his house destruction. It seems like someone with Valyrian blood should stay as far as possible from the Lannisters.
