In this video we discuss that dreaded feeling of wanting to quit your game.
Should you give up on your current project?
Is starting a new game the way to go?
Is your current game project a good fit for you?
What's the cause, are you overwhelmed?
When this temptation creeps up, as indie developers it can be SO EASY to drop the old project and get started on a newer more exciting game idea, one that gets your heart pumping again!
If this is a feeling you can relate to, you're in the right place!
If you're new to our channel, we're Brandon & Nikki from Sasquatch B Studios. We sold our house to start our game studio, and work full time on building our business and making our game, Veil of Maia.

Well it’s either I reduce the current scope and get disappointed because it’s not the dream game I wanted. Or I take a break and work on a smaller project to learn more about something. But then it feels like a waste of time because you tell yourself you’d have done it either way while making your current game.

I have a table I work through, divided into 6 disciplines, and by rough priority - code, design, art, sound, bugs and marketing. and a loose goal, to get a few things done, to talk about in my devblog each Saturday. If I find a bug, I add it to my list, or if it's a fast fix, I'll just get it done. I avoid coding and thinking too hard in an evening, so it doesn't interrupt my sleep too much and save the code for days I have a decent chunk of time, but mostly break it into small parts, so I don't get too frustrated if I don't finish something. Art I do in the evening when I don't want to think too hard. Also carry a notepad, and any down-times during the day-job, traveling etc, I can think about solutions, so when I am at the keyboard, I usually know the goal and I can get to creating.

Great video, I also need to calm myself and find that joy by visualizing the end product. It's hard because I get easily distracted and enjoy working through problems then I realise it probably wasnt the best use of my time. I hope I dont quit my curent project but hope I realise if its a dead end for me before its too much wasted time. Cant wait for more updates on VoM!

I find it funny that you said "wasted time" twice in your comment. I totally feel you there, and it's my biggest struggle. I have trouble feeling happy about my day if every last second wasn't a "good use of my time." I try to remember that mistakes, even dead ends, aren't truly a waste though. You'll learn something from it everytime. Good luck on your project! And updates are on the horizon, I promise lol. It keeps getting delayed but we're still hard at work on it!

Well the first game I created was kinda hard and it took me rather long time to make and I had lots of struggles. Lots of struggles both creationwise and both psychologically. I wanted to set a deadline, which was finishing the game by Christmas. Well that was bit of a hassle. I mean this was some years ago now (so not the previous Christmas). Maybe I should have given myself more time, the game did end up looking unfinished after all. Checking the list: art (yes), animations (yes), programming (yes), level design (kinda scrappy), enemy design (okayish, but not very good), sound (no), music (no), media (no), marketing (no). I just didn't want to add sound, because I wanted to make this game a very "video" game, and not a "sound" game, sometimes I make games like that, I can still add sound later on if I want to. If such a game doesn't do its thing with zero sound, than I think it fails at it's purpose. Well the game that I created is unlikeable to any stylish person, but I still find both the creation and the outcome kinda special and bewildering. Then again it was my first game, I am obviously fond of it. It took me months to make, summer and autumn were the main phase. I couldn't test it enough, and some stupid bugs and issues still remained. This is of course just a passion project of an amatuer, not a commercial product.

I think one thing that helps me stay modivated is taking a step back from the part of the project I am doing and work on an other part. Usually I love doing the coding/in engine stuff and struggle staying focused on the art stuff. For myself it feels like it is the art that really makes the game feel unique but I havent been doing digital art long to really feel like Im making progress and its tough

Love that. I won't stick to the parts that make me feel like crap for too long before moving onto things I really enjoy. Particles is when I'm in my happy place lol. I'm in refactoring hell right now but I've been taking breaks to do other little things to make it feel like progress is being made.

Glad you found it helpful! I try to give advice that's specific to game developers but honestly it could be applied to any creative/entrepreneurial pursuit. The struggles are similar in all of them. Good luck with whatever you're working on! Feeling discouraged is okay, I hope you can push past it anyways, cheers man!

@@sasquatchbgames I appreciate the confidence. I was adding the ability to kick a player and ended up breaking what I already had working so the game doesn't get updated when a player leaves, even if they're the host!!! To make matters worse, I'm using Plastic SCM for my source control and it's making reverting back to a previous revision really hard, much harder than I'm used to with Git. Grrrr.

I put a lot of work into my project but with low visibility of it. On some development stage I decided to invest more in stuff like content and visuals overall to feel that I'm working on game, not on some tech demo)

Smart. It's hard to stay motivated on a project that feels like it's just a tech demo. The visuals really make it feel like a "real" game - even though nothing gameplay-wise changes

Why trello? Why not Jira? :) I buy music and sound fx-es for my game. I think for first game it is really time consuming for composing music and e.g. create footsteps fx-es on my own. Also for my first game I simply buy assets like hero (protagonist) weapons (in pack). Ok it is not cheap or free but fast and it is a pack. I chose an artist who has several assets in the same category so I will be able to buy more assets later for more content. Absolutely my game is not unique for the graphics perspective, but my main goal is to publish a whole game (this year).
