    @@ChristianJMare you really advocating for this? PTO should be a request. lets say a company 10 employees.. and all want the same week off.. that's a week of No Profit and shut down, but have to pay all for PTO? what if a whole Dept at a larger firm went on PTO. at the same time, Like IT for example. computer issue happens.. or company gets hacked and loses confidential data without knowing it... Network goes down... well, company will be grinded to a halt until people return to work. PTO needs to be co-ordinated to the benefit of BOTH Employer and employee.

    I love it 5 years ago I put in for a PTO day and my boss gave me such a hard time about it that my co-workers (who had been there more years than me and dealt with similar problems) told me just to call out sick instead of trying to give them ample notice. It’s worked ever since (6am phone call to the answering machine … and have a nice day) 😂😂😂😂😂

    I work to live, NOT live to work……. The sooner any of my employers realize this, the better off we will all be. I don’t owe anything to my employer, they owe me…… that’s why they pay me.

    It don’t make sense to even threaten somebody with firing them. So you as a boss think it smart to fire me and have to go through looking for replacement (that’s going to take more than a week) .than just letting me have time off and still have an employee to come back for the job. Make it make sense please, 🙄 I’ll wait… lol 😂. Yup calling out sick on day of cuz I can be petty too 🤷🏽‍♀️

    This just happened to me!! I requested to be off the last week of May and my supervisor tried to tell me I couldn’t because there someone else off that week! She tried to make me pick a different week and I said no, I want the week I’m requesting, she then said she would have to check with someone else and at the end she approved it, they do this crap every single time!!!

    our company has a rule that you can't book time off in time in august or the Harbour festival, I had a family thing going on and they told me I couldn't so I did exactly this and called in sick.

    All one has to do is start preparing a new job from the moment PTO is denied. No job is irreplaceable. They can write you up and threaten to fire you all they want; you can leave at-will and find a job that respects your outside of work life. Too many people think a job is something they should value above themselves and their families. It’s just a thing you do to get money. Whether you’re a C-Level, Director, or Seasonal Employee. Do what’s best for you, not what’s best for a company.

    If it's wedding and other family stuff I see no issues as family comes first. My one Uncle told Costco (his job after retiring from Ford to stay busy) upon hiring that he takes a family retreat to FL every year for 2 months. He lied and said it was a religious retreat that he has done for 30+ years (the length of time is real) my cousins always got out of school for months to be in FL straight A students too. It's just what they did. So Costco says no issues, and there wasn't for a few years. Then someone new comes in and says "wait, what?" and says look you are scheduled to work he looked at her and said "I'm not asking you I'm just letting you know I'll be gone per the agreement" and that is what he did, he came back and they didn't fire him...LOL I remember him saying they tried to make him employee of the month and he turned it down, he said "look I show up I do my job and I will not park in the spot etc give it to someone else". He said employees were nasty about that stuff they all fought to get it etc and it does nothing for you. I guess that is what being retired vs having to NEED the job is like. Family stuff, I'm not asking I'm saying LOOK I won't be in I'm just being nice and letting you know months out. Honestly I have never had an issue in the past, one place encouraged us to take unpaid time off which I did....LOL They then went under.

Ive left a job and had a job the very next day plenty of times. My skills will always and forever be in demand. I can always make more money but I cannot make more time.

    I had supervisor who got upset because i need 3 days sick leave due to foot injury and demanded that i go back to work. I argued that I cant put my weight to my foot and he made things difficult for me and demanded that I should get a a 'fit to work' letter from my doctor. so I went to a music festival in a wheel chair. post it all over my socials and he got furious.

    Sorry, not sorry. I am no longer in the military, you don't own me. It's not a request. You give me a limited amount of PTO, and I get to take it whenever I want. Especially since most companies have done away with sick time and merged it with PTO. So yeah, I'm just letting you know ahead of time. I won't be here. The right answer should be .. "Have a great time, I'll see ya when you get back!"

    @Jermaine Beckford What's their value? Is it more than everyone else? Cuz everyone else has to follow the rules except for this guy. If I were the boss and someone came at me with this kind of disrespect, I'd tell them to let the rest of his coworkers know why he's more important than them. That he needs to tell Nancy why she can no longer have her approved time off because Mr. Entitled here is more important. In a workplace, there needs to be mutual respect and this is not that. And like I said, if you have enough savings and care this little about your job, you don't need to be working.

He had ample time to schedule around the employee's PTO. Also notice my wording is "KNOW your worth". All employees are worth more, they just don't know it. The boss wanted him to return from his vacation half way through the week and go back for one day, then return to work. ALL employees are worth more than this.

    @@jabbajawz Would it be fair to say that BOTH people in this scenario were being a jerk? The big thing for me is that it boils down to respect and professionalism. And yes, I apply that to BOTH the manager and the employee in this scenario. Let's start at the beginning. I assume this fictional workplace is like most actual workplaces that have clearly written policies, including policies around PTO and how it must be approved. The employee in this video came with an attitude from the start and TOLD his boss that he wouldn't be showing up one week in the future. Like he put it, it was not a discussion and not a conversation. He just would not be there that week. Just that alone shows that the employee has no respect for the policies and has no respect for his manager. So already he's putting his manager on the defensive. Managers, just like everyone else are human, and as you saw, his reaction to being disrespected was to deny the request. Not condoning it or saying that's right. I'm just saying that he's human and can make emotional decisions when put on the spot as he was. Now, what COULD the employee have done differently? He could have had a respectful conversation to start. He could have approached his manager respectfully and had a discussion around needing to take that week off. He could have said, "I would like to request X week off for a very important event. This just came up and I understand Nancy is already scheduled off that week so I'm happy to work with you on a plan and brainstorm coverage options." Do you see how that could be received a little different than: "Hey, I don't care what the policy is or what you say, I'm taking this time off, I bought my tickets without even having a discussion, and you can figure out any problems with running the department on your own." You say "all employees are worth more than this" but don't seem to include that manager as an employee. There seems to be this notion that managers are some evil corporate robots who earn millions and do nothing all day but count their stacks of money. In reality, most people's managers are only a level or two above the employee and prolly only make a few thousand more than the employee. They're just employees themselves and are trying to do their job. Yes, the employee deserves to take their PTO. All employees do. But the manager deserves respect and deserves a discussion around how he can help the employee take the time off he needs while also figuring out how to keep business running. A lot of the comments I read are "well, the manager can just do the work then." Again, this assumes the manager doesn't already have their own work and that the department can run with one person. What if the manager has a scheduled medical procedure that week? Is the assumption that managers should give up their health and PTO for their direct reports? Again, point is, a good workplace should be built on mutual respect because at the end of the day, whether you're an entry level employee, a manager, or the CEO, we are all people.

    My supervisor when every they had a call in would call my shift and everyone said no. When they asked me I told them no. They were like okay. They started asking everyone on first shift if they wanted to come in to work third shift and they all said no. Well supervisor called back and was like I need someone to stay. Like really you can’t come in. Oh I am at a wedding or I am just now getting home. Excuse after excuse was made and it made me angry because they were the 3rd shift supervisor and was in charge of making the schedule. There was one time that I had asked for Thursday-Monday off because I was going to be out of town. They only gave my Friday-Sunday off. I worked extra hours to have extra money and then boom. Did not go to work I went to see my brother graduate from basic training. They called me the following day and I said well I am on the road and I told you I was not going to be in town. I got in trouble but they wanted me to come in for third shift and I wanted to sleep.

    This is why I submitted all my PTO requests at least 30 days in advance - this way if they were denied I could submit my resignation and cash out the time while penalizing the company for treating me like shit.

    I got mine denied for 1 day, i came in cause it wasn't a big deal until they cut my hours to 9 hours for a week. Shoulda just not showed up i am a human being and 17 still I dont care about some job i was going to leave after i graduated anyways

    I do not understand how this is a toxic work environment. Most jobs have a set amount of people that can be off at the same time. If others have requested those same days off before you, then, of course, they will deny you. That's life. If you could plan enough to book a flight and hotel you can surely plan to put in the days off. This is bad advice that will get you fired.

    Some companies do not allow you to request until 6 months in advance. So you can't do anything until PTO gets approved.

    Agreed. Been on both sides of this coin. For most enterprises, there is a minimum staff level required to operate. In some industries, like healthcare, that minimum is a regulatory mandate beyond the power of the company. Staffing is a delicate game, and there is no way to win the "so hire more people" argument from entitled employees who don't understand that if everyone got their way every time, everyone would also be looking for a new job because that company would go under. This is the unlovely backside of the 24/7/365 world that consumers up and down the economy expect - and I'm not necessarily saying that's a good expectation, either. My kingdom to go back to the time when practically everything but emergency services shut down on holidays and Sundays. Personally, it is not fun to deny a PTO request, especially around holidays (which my company already holds as paid non-work days), but if any employee, myself included, wants a paycheck to come back to, it sometimes has to happen. Holiday weeks, and even the weeks of some major sporting or hobby events, are especially high-demand, and requests are first-come, first-get - it is absolutely the ONLY fair way to manage it. It doesn't matter how many people are hired, there quite simply comes a point where we cannot operate with one more person in XYZ department planned off on a given day - if we all had our 'druthers, we'd all be "living our best life" somewhere other than the office or jobsite. Holiday weeks go fast, and I strongly encourage people to plan and organize accordingly. We don't have a minimum time horizon to submit a request - if you tell me you need the third week of October in 2037 off, I'll gladly put it in my calendar today. Common sense to me to plan "fun stuff" around the activity that ultimately foots the bill for the fun. Prepare The Others? From personal experience, if you're denied a requested PTO day(s), you've been "The Others" for some time.

    @@Ruffian1790 Nah. I requested PTO months in advance before. No one else had the day off. Management decided a week before that the PTO was being denied because someone they got the job for wanted it off a week before it. I literally had to argue with my manager that it was non-negotiable and I'm leaving one way or another.

    @@zetetsu7169 Good for you. That's shitty business practice and poor management of people if your manager tried to revoke previously approved PTO. If PTO is approved for you, once it's approved the conversation should be over, not revisited later when your time off suddenly becomes inconvenient for the manager. If they hire someone else in the meantime who wants the same days off as a condition of accepting the offer (I think I understand this to be your situation?), that is their problem, to either accept the condition or negotiate an alternative for the new guy. The situation you describe doesn't negate my earlier comments. I never said there aren't weasel managers, cruddy companies, or clueless HR's. I've worked for those places, too. Learned a lot about how not to do things.

    You actually can’t do that. The supervisor is well within his rights to now ask for a sick slip for every day you are absent. Normally they shouldn’t ask until the 3rd consecutive day except when the supervisor has reason to believe the employee is intentionally faking it. This is terrible advice. Companies will have no one working thanksgiving and Christmas if they let this happen.

    I’d certainly recommend against that. It takes like 5 mins to call the doctor’s office to know if that is a legitimate slip or not. You can get yourself in even more trouble. Challenge with this video is that there are certainly many HR options for employees who feel they might have been unfairly denied leave. If you ever find yourself feeling so undervalued that you can’t even spend time with family with ample notice, maybe you need to start looking for another position.

    The is an excellent example of how to lose your job. I am good with my guys when it comes to PTO but if someone really asked for it before you and you are TELLING me that it's my problem, you might as well have put in your letter of resignation. And the sick day ploy is only good if you can produce some doctors notes especially since the company pays for clinic visits and insurance.

    You’re the boss, the manager, some one is notifying you of a personal situation with plenty of time to prepare, how do you even benefit in that scenario if you are threatening to fire them, you are telling your employee they can either disregard their personal life to be a slave to you and make sure they know their life revolves around you and let your employees know they don’t matter as people only work subjects, or they are gonna take the time off regardless against your order and you fire them and lose an employee anyways, that’s some toxic ass leadership, if that date is un negotiable to them, that’s a you problem, you’re the manager, manage the schedules and make it work

    @tresfordays9644 Actually, that is more of a YOU problem if the date is not negotiable. You put yourself in that situation without first thinking about your job. Like I said, I am flexible with my guys and have even given them time off with a 24-hour notice. But if you come up to me and I let you know that that time is not available because other people already have that time slot because they requested it earlier than you. Then that right there is a YOU problem, and you should really consider YOUR options at that point. If YOU decide to just say F it, I am leaving, then don't expect to come back and everything be ok.

    @@RedDragon1260 no, it’s a you problem, a YOU as a company doesn’t value what’s important to me, YOU aren’t and employer worth working for getting my time, so YOU can spend more resources SO YOU can fill my spot

    In that case, you specify when the wedding is and find a work around for it. Come into your boss like that, don't be surprised if they hire your replacement full time and you get walking papers. This clip might work with an office but not with union jobs where you do need to work with HR or the scheduler. I'd fire the employee and let him find a new job

    This is ridiculous. In this scenario, the employee KNOWS before he buys the tickets that he has to request time off and get it approved before he knows if he'll be able to travel. If it's a wedding, he had AMPLE time from when he learned about the dates to request his time off. You talk like that to your boss, you'll be lucky to have a job from now until you fake sick and get fired anyway. Employees have responsibilities, too. Should he have to miss a wedding because his boss is a jerk? No! But the boss wasn't being a jerk. This employee chose to buy non-refundable tickets before he found out if he could have time off. He could have adjusted his dates to prevent understaffing if he'd asked in advance. Most of us want to work in a job for more than just long enough to get a vacation. Do not recommend this approach unless you enjoy job-hunting.

    @@twofacedance no, but he can travel closer to the date, or have his extra days after the wedding instead of before. The scenario was written indicating that the employer tried to negotiate something like that - not the wedding itself.

    My job won't let me request time more than 4 months in advance. I already had my lodging for vacation booked 7 months in advance. Now granted, they didn't deny me my time but if they had? Guess what, they're SOL in my book. I don't give a damn if half their workforce called the same time off, not my problem.
