The thing that impresses me the most here is how the i5 draws ~1/4th of the power of the i9 while still giving pretty decent performance

You can undervolt and O/C fine tune the i9 for even more performance while drawing less power in games or productivity depending on the needs. Leaving it stock is pretty dumb. Same with the gpu, you should undervolt and O/C for optimized performance and way less power draw.

  • @adriancioroianu1704

Reviewers should make tutorials about fine tuning the i7's and i9's especially of the last 2 gens. These cpu's are extremely capable of delovering up to 20% more performance while consuming 30-40% less power in games for example. But no, most reviews are at stock and conclusion based on those numbers. I don't have an analogy in mind right now but anyway, you should never buy an i7 or i9 if you don't know how to use it properly. It's just a waste of electricity and money in the end of the day. If you're not willing to fine tune your hardware just go with amd, they are made like consoles nowadays, you don't have to do anything extra, but the stock numbers are deceiving to the actual potential of modern i7's and i9's.

*Slower fps doesn't mean the cpu is a bottleneck. The 12400f can be slower at 4K but it's not a bottleneck. It would be a bottleneck at lower resolution and a very high refresh rate. Ex: A 300hz monitor at 1080p would REALLY show the difference between the cpu's. Whether it's a $400 or $4000 pc, there is always a bottleneck in a pc depending on resolution and game settings.

I have a 7900XTX paired with a R7 5700x. I *was* concerned about a bottleneck @1440p 165hz. Lucky for me and for many other enthusiasts on a budget, you don’t need to go all out on an expensive cpu or a brand new platform to get good performance with a 80 or 90 class card. This video is proof of that concept. If you asked me how different a 14th gen i9 and a 12th gen i5 performed in comparison, i would have expected much more of a difference, even at 4k. I could have a few more frames with a better processor paired with my 7900XTX, but im happy with my setup.

  • @JFKtheV

    @JFKtheV

    5 ай бұрын

Well,@@MrMilkyCoco, you're obviously missing the point of this whole video. You don't need a top of the line processor to adequately game on a top of the line GPU. First of all, I had enough money to buy a 7900XTX. I bought one because I wanted a 4080 class card, without the 100 dollar BARE MINIMUM Nvidia tax. Secondly, I didn't get a 5800x3d because its almost 140 dollars more expensive for a chip that performs only ~15-25% faster in games. Also not to mention that the x3d has a peak wattage of 130w, where as the 5700x is just 87w. I used a 3700x for a long time, and it served me very well. A 5700x is more than enough for my use case. So, with my build, I get maybe 10 to 20 less fps while saving 400 dollars. Thats what I meant by "enthusiast on a budget".

Great comparison! It's rare that reviewers put big hardware in midrange systems, but I feel like this represents the majority of people contemplating upgrades. I play VR often and was thinking of upgrading the GPU but wasn't sure if I should think about getting an X3D CPU first, since people say that it smooths out FPS a lot, especially in Skyrim and Fallout VR. Here I can see that, while the Bethesda engine in Starfield is more CPU limited than other games and the newer chip does help, it's not going to prevent a fast card from being a lot bigger of an upgrade than a new processor would be at those high resolutions. Very useful result, thanks!

I typically watch videos with subtitles on, and where you've placed the benchmark results the text box overlaps with the results you show - It could be nice to raise that up to a higher spot in the video for those of us who usually use subtitles. I already have a 3080, and even at 1440p, a few select titles that actually use the CPU quite a bit (like BG3) actually struggles to maintain 60fps min at 100% CPU load. I figured the Super would be massively bottlenecked until later this year, but I guess it's just game dependent.

Very glad you covered this. Gonna get a 12400f soon for my 3080. Mostly for RT, which my 9400f can't handle. Ill finally have a balanced pc, with the cpu headroom to upgrade my gpu in the future

Excellent, thank you! I have a non Super 4080 on the way and wondered if my 13500 with DDR5 would NOT do it justice at 1440p/144hz (max of my monitor), but it looks like I'll be fine trying some RT titles!

That KCD performance is crazy. I have a i9 9900kf and I know it's a bit older but I get nothing but micro stutter in npc heavy areas. This has been a frustration of mine for years. Currently running an XTX and if I want to get rid of the stuttery frames I have to turn settings way way down. On ultra I get plenty of fps but the frametime graph looks like criminal taking a polygraph.

My previous built was a i9-10900kf with rtx3080 and the CPU was sleeping most of the time... when I upgraded towards a DDR5 platform, I went for a i5-13600kf and a Radeon 7900XTX.... and I'm pretty happy gaming with in in 4K.

Love this. I have a rather strange setup of an 5600x and 3070TI both fully watercooled on a custom loop. I've been eyeing the 4080s as a potential next step up but was a little concerned it would be bottlenecked by the CPU. It's good to know I wouldn't leave too much performance on the table, now I just wish I could see Nvidia's roadmap for when the 5080 launches!

What we need is two tests. An RTX 5090 upon release alongside a Pentium 4 And a GT 710 with the highest end CPU available at the time the 5090 comes out. The ultimate pro gamer setup.

I did a similar thing and paired an R5 5600 with a TUF gaming 7900XTX. I then upgraded my CPU to a 5800x3d. The difference between the CPU's in benchmarks at 4k was exactly what you found. Maybe 1 or 2 fps average difference but the lows improved. Almost felt like Id wasted money on the upgrade but some of the newest games have utilised it more so I feel better about it now

This is exactly the vid I was looking for! I have an old I9 9700k and a 750w psu! Fingers crossed this will do ok until I can afford to upgrade the rest ( getting a 4080 super) Will the i9 9700k be ok 'ish as well?

Nice twist on the traditional benchmark process and that is one beefy card, if it can pull off +60fps at either 1440p or 2160p pretty much maxed out! Personally, if I had a GPU of this calibre, I'd definitely go with something like a 14900K CPU and a decent board, to get the most out of the GPU and also to not make the CPU as much of a limitation if dropping back to lower resolutions such as 1080p (I do not have a monitor that exceeds 1080p resolution). Having said that, I'd go with a decent motherboard no matter what the setup, because only having 2 RAM slots is an unforgiving limitation, as is only having a single M.2 slot and 4 SATA ports.

It always depends on your use case. I always need high cache, high frequency CPU’s as I mainly play tarkov, GPU can be anything mid range but it always has been the cpu I cared about.

Thank you so much for this. I have been wondering if a decent 750 watt PSU would be sufficient for 4080 super and how much of a bottleneck my 6 core CPU would make above 1080p resolution. This video made that clear. Why other tech channels ignore this type of scenarios, some people don't have the budget for complete system upgrade, they may upgrade "this" now, "that" later, one by one as their budget would allow.

the overhead CPU figures on the I9 would mean you could do some cpu tasks in the background while also gaming, perhaps render a video or listen to music with chrome open in the background etc

This is interesting to see my friend (a so called professional in the computing industry) put together a system for another friend of mine. He paired a 7950x3d with a 4060 (non TI) When I told him he had a huge bottleneck and could have spent the money on a better gpu he was really salty about it. I'm personally rocking a 9700k with a 3080 wich I got at launch for only 720EUR and I,m very happy with my system. Only back in 2020 it was not possible to get a high end cpu with an upgrade path since amd and intel were both at the end of their cycle. So i,m wondering what a 4080 would do in a system with a 9700k actually. If you would come across a chanse to test this I would be eternally gratefull. Big props to you and have a nice weekend buddy

How about on a core-i9 (or any pcie-3) generation? I would be curious how running a newer card on an older pcie bus performs (pcie-4 vs pcie-3).
