Buying a "mystery" graphics card from CEX

Ғылым және технология

If you buy an older graphics card from CEX online then the exact model you get will be a bit of a mystery, until you collect it or it gets delivered. Today I treated myself to a GPU at my local store, so come with me as we talk about the buying experience, the card itself and it's performance.

    Brought a GTX 1650 from CEX not long ago, ended getting a OC ASUS variant of the card: increasing performance quite a decent amount for no extra cost. If you set your expectation to get the worst variant of the GPU: you will either not be disappointed or be quite happy.

    Excellent video, a fairly new subscriber here and I'm loving the content, im also a fan of pushing old hardware as I'm a bit of a skinflint, the current pc I'm tinkering with was free from work and is a Lenovo M720s. I5 6 CORE, 8gb ddr4 and a 256gb ssd. With it being low profile it has the front panel and lid taken off to fit a 4gb Radeon 550 pulse graphics card. I'm quite surprised what i can get it run at 60fps but my monitor which was also free runs at 1600/900. All fun anyway and you should give Digital foundry a shoutout as it was on the weekly show that Richard leadbetter mentioned your channel. Many thanks, Chris Nearly forgot to mention, I've got that Msi graphics card in a shoebox in garage lol.

    You got quite lucky there as the Gaming X is one of the better coolers, MSI even use the same one for the 1080ti. And it's nice to see you out and about, you buy so much stuff from CEX you might as well ask them if you can film there because you do a great job promoting their shops. It would be nice to have a budget building series where you go into a CEX store and try to build a PC using the parts you can get.

I have a Xeon E3-1240 V2, B75 motherboard from an old office PC, Patriot 8GB DDR3 off Ebay, an old XFX 450W PSU from Ebay, my spare 1TB Samsung 870 I replaced with an M.2, a cheap 92mm Amazon CPU cooler, a really cheap CiT case, and finally my RX 6600 8GB I've just replaced with an RX 7800XT for my main PC. Excited to get stuck in, once some more bits arrive.

    As someone with a 1070 Strix, I'm looking forward to more 1070 videos, perhaps some comparisons to newer cards when it comes to considering what to upgrade to considering it's pretty safe to say that the 10 series is pretty much at the end of it's lifespan looking at minimum/recomended specs for new AAA games such as Starfield and Alan Wake 2 for more recent examples with Starfield having the 1070 Ti as minimum so the non ti 1070 would fail to meet minimum and same with Alan Wake 2 with a RTX 2060 being the minimum for 1080p 30 fps on the low preset and the 2060 would be at least a slight bump up from the 1070 for performance. When it comes to what to upgrade to I was advised to target a 2080 Ti, 3060 Ti, 3070 or 6700 XT/6750 XT to upgrade from my 1070 for like $300 to $350 CAD (Roughly 178 to 208 GBP according to google currency conversion.)

    @cosmy7083

    Yesterday was my last time with my 1070 after 6-7 years and I can say that it was a pleasure but it had to end. I decided to not go kamikaze on the budget and give AMD a chance and I don't regret it. So I bought a RX 5700 XT for 120$ and sold the 1070 for the same amount. Imagine that it gave me the 2X performance on literally all games and on 1440p. I did some research and found out that on the Nvidia chart is placed between rtx 3060 and 3060 ti without upscaling ( depends on the game, sometimes can be under them ). This card after 4 years after release still has some ass to kick on the second hand market as price/performance. So imagine how the performance will be if you go straight to something higher like a 2080 Ti, 3070, 6700/6750 XT. If I have to choose one I would be totally fine with either one of those but if I'm thinking about the future and the VRAM problem I can see that 8 GB VRAM wouldn't be enough soon...so at least I would raise the 300& to 400$ and start to look at RX 6800 16GB or the RTX 3080 10GB/12GB. Just to be sure that I don't need to upgrade so often in the nearest future just for 100$ difference. If you still want to stick with the 300$ then just go with the RTX 3070/3070 Ti. Your happiness will skyrocket either way limited or not by the VRAM in the most demanding games.

    Got a GTX 1080 ti lying around somewhere here with the same cooler. MSI did a really great job with the nice looking and feeling backplate.

    I used to own this exact model of the 1070. It was very cool both in terms of temperature as well as the look. I really liked that fan design from MSI.

    G'day Random, I love my RX580Gaming+ & GTX1080Ti GamingX with this cooler, it works really well & is Super Quiet even on 30°C-40°C days. My RX580 Boosts to 1421MHz & will sit there all day no problem, my 1080Ti while MSI claim 1657MHz actually Self Boosts to 1974MHz without an OC & will easily top 2000MHz with an OC. Ps Although I have never thought to use them for PC parts & not sure how they compare price wise, we have had CEX down here in Australia for 11yrs now. They started in New South Wales expanding to Queensland + Australian Capital Territory with almost 30 stores.

    I got an I3 4160 for 1020 egp back in 2016 and you got a slightly better model for 1 pound in 2023. I feel kind of devastated right now 😂😂😂😂 but I must admit it ran modern games miraculously till I upgrade to another I3 10105f a few months ago. Terrific work with all the used parts shopping and funnily enough I have an msi z490 a pro.

    Good buy and to be fair even if you go to the shop you don't know what model you will find. And if its a LP without or without the brackets it can be full size versions rather than LP as you are wanting and product pic suggested. It's really hit and miss. You can probably tell is a lesser version when you see the price difference for each version of that card.

    I've always found CEX to be pretty good, I admit their prices are a wee bit high but that 2 year warranty, and never had an issue with anything I've ever got from them.

    CEX launched one shop this year in my country and the second shop launched about two months ago. The first shop is located inside the mall near my workplace. I got myself a GTX 1660ti for half the original price. Best upgrade to my old GTX 1060 3gb
