TL;DW - Fish are profitable to smoke at: 101g if you make Coal with the Kiln in Year 1 151g if you buy Coal from Clint in Year 1 251g if you buy Coal from Clint in Year 2+ Once you have Artisan, those numbers reduce to: 57, 84, and 140 for the same circumstances. My recommendation? Smoke fish worth 200g or more if you have Artisan and Angler. I highly recommend crafting a bait machine and going for high value fish like catfish and super cucumbers if you want to experience the majesty of the fish smoker. Edit: Updated the sheet to reflect silver quality crab pots via deluxe bait.

My rule of thumb has been anything worth 150. I'm day 8 of summer year 3 and made enough on the meadow farm with the coop and 9 smokers to pay for a barn and fully upgrading everything. Mostly through smoking fish I do dehydrate a bunch of mushrooms. So I'd say it's very profitable. If you account for the new rod and challenge bait the night market fishing is next level.

I actually grew nauseous when you said out loud that artisan needs a nerf. It doesn’t matter how right you are, you just don’t speak those kinds of evil into the universe.

Weird how CA nerfed Tea Saplings which were only viable in year 1 anyway, but left artisan alone. But then again, artisan is still so bad that making truffle oil is barely worth it...

The only thing nerfing artisan at this point would do is make it more difficult to earn money in the end game. There is no need. Fish and forage are now available to be artisan, too. Why nerf it? The only thing that could "benefit" is mining.

Imma disagree here. Yes, it's "broken" by virtue of being so strong its crazy to even consider picking the other farming professions, but I think it's actually needed to make perfection or end game achievements possible. It's already a slog with artisan as is, I can't imagine how awful it would be trying to reach the golden clock without artisan as it is now.

even though I wanted to watch the whole thing, I really appreciate the TLDRs at the beginning of your videos. it is an honorable choice, and shows you’re not just trying to milk minutes for Adsense revenue, but are genuinely trying to give a dense amount of info in an entertaining fashion and not waste the viewer’s time. unlike some certain stardew-tubers. Fun fact...you can take Mr Qi's quest for the second set of legendary fish. Catch Legend II...make Legend II bait with fish bait maker. Catch more Legend II If you use the master skill perk to make a quality bobber to raise the quality of catches by one rank (so gold--> iridium)...you can catch a bunch of Legend II so long as the quest is active...

I love it so much that Concerned Ape didn't just shuffle some numbers around to rebalance things that people gave feedback on. Instead, he added a whole lot of new stuff to make it more complex and more worth it, like the prize system to make billboard quests worth it and all this fishing stuff. He goes above and beyond every single time and it really makes me happy to see there are people in the world like him.

tip: you can eat the cave jelly for luck, which i think will increase that chance to get it. regardless fishing in the lava on floor 100 of the mines gives you a good amount of them.

if you go on a good luck day and eat the first jelly you fish up you can easily get 50+ in a day from lava cave. trash doesnt seem to use your tackle too so a spinner and delux bait from a machine works wonders on your catch rate @@nyanbinarydisaster

@@partygamingz3332tbf blacksmith is really only worthwhile when you have excess iridium bars and/or radioactive bar so yeah more coal for the win early on. Once you get to the point where you are drowning in cash and bars blacksmith is the way to go. Plus dog statue can allow you to change the skills so why not have coal doubling early on?

Honestly it just makes me wonder: how big is the fishing bar with a Master enchantment Advanced Iridium Rod using gold star Seafoam Pudding, two cork bobbers, and the challenge bait. Nothing but triple iridium lava eels right there in the mines with your smokers on site.

You can also use the chef during the desert festival for another +3 to fishing. Even with an effective fishing level of 24 (half the size of the bar) I'm not able to catch either the lava eel or the legend with challenge bait. I'm sure that some people perfect the legend like that, but for me catching the really difficult fish using challenge bait seems impossible when you lose the fish if it leaves the bar 3 times.

Fish Smoker is SO GOOD in Riverland's Farm. I can now make even more money Spring Year 1 because of this item. All I need to do is fish for Catfish & Eel (at least Silver Quality) whenever it rains. Made about 3000g with just 6 or 7 catfishes. An alternative fish to smoke would be the Bullhead or Largemouth Bass (Gold Quality). I really, REALLY love this new smoker. Then again, I just love any QoL updates that buffs fishing xD

The free smoker isn't necessary. You can't get the Bait Machine for Spring 3 anyway, so its not really necessary to have the smoker for that. By your 2nd rainy day, you'll be able to buy the smoker recipe and make one yourself.

With quality bait every fish you catch is Iridium regardless of perfect/imperfect catch at level 10 fishing. With Fishing mastery you get to use 2 tackles on your advanced iridium rod GG EZ

@@MrErizid It is necessary FOR ME. All I need to do is catch a Catfish (first fish trick) on Spring 3, and somehow find a coal (through rocks or dig). The best location to get a guaranteed Spring 3 Catfish (imo) would be where Glacierfish is caught. But to do this you must not catch any fish until you see the Catfish pattern. I don't use Bait Machine that much yet, but it will be more useful mid-game to late-game for sure. Smoker recipe is easy, same goes with the 3 new jellies. Coal can be easy too after unlocking Charcoal Kiln. All in all, Fish Smoker is just a great addition for fishing peeps like myself!

The Bait Maker/Fish Smoker combo is absolutely busted, I love it so much! I honestly think that Smoked Fish benefitting from Angler and Artisan is a bit TOO strong, but I'm not complaining. At least it's offset a little bit by the difficult crafting recipe, as you mentioned. You can actually get a free one from the Prize Machine in Lewis' house too after snagging enough tickets, but you might get a Dehydrator instead depending on your seed. One thing worth noting too is that, if you want to get the money on the same day you smoke the fish, you have to sell them to Pierre rather than Willy since they count as an artisan good at the end of the day. Not too important, but hopefully it'll help someone!

My gold caught, smoked Legend with Angler and Artisan trades sells for $30,499!!!

In old games I'd often go nuts with crab pots everywhere, with automate mod. After I got everything I wanted from treasure chests I'd switch to the no trash perk. Looking at the smoker, this is a really good case for no bait instead. The crab pots will generate a lot of coal from trash recycling. I might even move on to fish value over treasure chance, and just keep buying bait. Love how it changes my evaluation of perks.

About someone not smoking the legend, i saw someone who chose Riverlands and worked to catch it in Spring Year 1 so they could smoke it for a large amount of early money on reddit

Artisan does not need to be nerfed because of this. I just did some quick math, and ,assuming a good week with 3 rainy days, you would top out at about 120k. In that same week, with only 40 Ancient Fruit wine, you get about 90k. The fish smoker is surprisingly balanced.

@@Leapalot perhaps instead of removing the buff (and making the player grind a lot more to get the endgame items) perhaps it could be a reward for something else, like a mastery thing or something. The problem with the professions is that you have to pick between two paths, and artisan always comes out better. Effectively the player isn't just locked into the choice of artisan, but also the preceding choice of farming vs ranching.

Bait machine deserves some math here. We want to find out which fish are "self-sustaining" in terms of bait (catch said fish, throw in bait machine, catch more, throw more in bait machine, so forth). Given that a fish gives 5-10 bait (7.5 average) so to speak, the targeted fish should preferably have a bite rate of at least 1 in 6 or 17% or so catch rate with targeted bait to be "sustainable". Catfish with bait, in my exp is a 80-90% bite rate in Spring--which is why they are so good with the bait maker. On the other hand lava eel, at lvl 100 mines, is not sustainable, despite the very high value of the fish, regrettably. I find that sturgeon (summer) and super cucumber (summer night) also work fine, but nowhere near as good as catfish. You spend more fish on bait to catch the same number of target fish because you often catch something else as "bycatch". But I'm mainly curious to see whether stonefish or ice pip are worth trying for. I have a feeling stonefish with targeted bait could beat largemouth bass in terms of spring 1 money. Imagine selling something like 20-30+ smoked iridium stonefish in a non-rain day's work Spring 1.

I'm curious about stonefish too. Super Cucumbers have been going pretty well for me, but between all the trash I get and the short time window they're not even close to catfish. 😔 I would recommend the caldera for lava eel though in the late game.

it's definitely not worth it for the ice pip. or the lava eel in the mines, it's just too rare to fish up more then once per 10 hooks but sturgeon is the best fish to do this with in personal expiriance

In my experience the Stonefish is somehow harder to self-sustain than Ice Pip. Spend a couple in game hours fishing Ice Pip and the result is pretty good. Might try again with fishing mastery two dressed spinners and deluxe bait

Love this video man! Super grateful. Personally I love the riverland farm but could never use it since it’s a pretty tough layout, but it’s been great starting with a smoker. On my other saves the Jellies have been a huge pain (sea especially) like you said though.

Seems like this was the buff the river farm needed. Concerned Ape still doing a great job! What he delivers for the initial purchase is absolutely bonkers. I only started playing at 1.4 so I can't speak for older versions but at that point I was already very happy with the final product at that time.

If what I've seen on the wiki is any indicator, fishing got a MASSIVE end game buff for this update. Thank DOG! It's been crazy OP for the start of the game, and complete crap after that for some 8 years now. X.x

I got one from the prize machine in Lewis' house early on in my Meadowlands Farm run -- and yeah it's pretty bonkers

With the addition of smoking it would be neat to see the fruit trees drop their own unique wood types for use with the smoker. Especially since fruit trees now drop their respective saplings when cut down. It would incentivise growing seasonal trees especially if they where to drop a surplus of their woods at the cost of not being usable outside of smoking or potential cosmetics/gifts. It would also even further incentivise playing around with fishing as a meta rather than the more common mindless pig/ancient fruit shenanigans. Id imagine coal would work as usual while the fruit tree woods could provide a reliable alternative and potentially further incentivise such as a greater increase in value. I say this because I am passionate about cooking and smoking is usually done best with the aid of fine woods like cherry or hickory as they add unique flavor profiles. It just makes such perfect sense to me! That said I love that they added smokers because that makes a good ole eel pond spam even juicier and I love my ponds. You can basically smoke an eel from each pond every time they hit capacity and they will also keep producing roe :3

With quality bobber at level 10 fishing every fish you catch is Iridium, including legendaries. All legendaries i caught were Iridium after this point. I don't even have fishing Mastery yet which with 2 tackles will make it extremely easy, plus you can get potentially triple fish with challenge bait

i love the fish smoker/bait maker combo, it's about time we got some op fishing buildings

Im thinking of trying the new rod, With trap bobber and quality bobber and deluxe bait, and then catch as many "Legend II" as possible, those should all be iridium quality, and by that time that this unlocks, artisan and Angler would be available so it could make some decent money even in the endgame. Alternative would be either Deluxe bait Cork bobber x2 for massive fishing bar, or Deluxe bait + Cork + trap bobber for safety.

Blessing of Waters + Challenge bait can get you an easy 9 iridium lava eels if you can deal with all the trash casts

idk if anyone else has pointed this put yet, but things caught in the crab pot (other than trash) can now be silver quality if you use deluxe bait, which means silver crabs, lobster, periwinkle, crayfish, shrimp, and snail are now all possible to obtain, whereas before they could only be base quality. With the other crab pot loot also being forageable they could already be iridium thanks to the botanist perk.

Tbh the riverlands farm was my favorite layout prior to Four Corners coming out, so I think my next farm is going to be a riverlands again!

Its great how concerned ape did address the issue with fishing late game in terms of making money by adding the smoker and bait maker because that means fish are useful for more than just food or keeping for other items they can give in the fish ponds like roe or gems

I'm planning to start a new game on switch when the update hits so these are good tips. Already in fall for the PC update but because I chose the meadowland farm I decided to go the animal value route. Problem is I only have three chickens and a cow so far! Whoops!

I suspected the Fish Smoker would be more useful than blue grass and early chickens, so I picked a Riverlands Farm for my 1.6 playthrough. It was kind of underwhelming at first as I was mainly working with Largemouth Bass. Thank you for pointing out Catfish--combined with the Bait Maker, this is the most early game money I've ever made! It's so cool to have a strong reason to pick Riverlands now.

I started a game in Riverlands as well. I wanted more fish smokers but the cost was nuts. So,, I went to Robin and had her build me a home for a friend on the farm. It comes with a fish smoker in it. I took the smoker out of it and then asked her to demolish the friends house. Then to make another. ,, I did this 5 times for 5G and didn't have to find any jelly or buy Willy's blue print. :)

I have not messed with bait machines yet because I stupidly didn’t think it was worth wasting the fish to make the bait. But you’ve convinced me. I’ve been using the you-know-what out of my smoker though.

Largemouth Bass, Sturgeon, Super Cucumber and Catfish are really the only fish worth making Bait for.

My hoarding habbit just paid big time XD.... I tend to save all the fish I catch until I reach lvl 10 fishing so I can get more gold with the professions, and the fact it doubles it is sooo good, those Jelly isn't much of a problem also since you get them passively unless you used them for stamina, the Cave one also is pretty commonn in floor 100 in the cave for me, so overall its a really good addition to the game

I have thousands of lobster and crab from filling my entire beach farm with crab traps as well as lava eel from dozens of ponds. Cant wait for this update on the switch

For completeness you should add silver quality for the crab pot fish, as using the new bait both increases the quality to silver and reduces the chance for trash. With how easy it is to make the machines that produce it after your first green rain, it's a nice bump for less mini-game inclined folks.

I'm almost at year 3 of a new save, and I agree that the smoker is worth it early game. As soon as you can get it, it can be a great money maker for year 1 and even year 2, but midway through year 2 and later I think it gets outshined by the usual culprits, ancient fruit and starfruit wine.

If your going for the fisherman build on the river farm I feel the play is to take forester and lumberjack in foraging and use a combo of charcoal kilns and recyclers to produce your coal.

@@Leapalot not true The only foraging level that takes a long time is 9 to 10. The rest is simply a matter of play style. Im mainly talking about end game though. Between the 25% more wood from forester, the 5% chance of double wood from the woodies secret book and all of the extra hard wood and drift wood you should be able to eliminate your reliance on buying coal from clint. If you start a small lumber farm at the beginning of the game and scale it up with smoker production as the game goes you shouldn't have much of a reliance on outside coal. The best part of fishing is its low overhead cost. I feel that spending a small bit of time to manage some trees and crab pots for coal could be worth it. Of course I have no hard numbers so its just speculation at this point.

This is nice actually because of my particular stubbornness to always go crab pot route with skills because I love not having to refill them all, so it's a way to ramp up fish prices again

Ya used one to smoke my rainbow truot after fishing both days of the event, was a nice profit on the side as part of the event.

The bait maker also goes extremely hard for the trout event! I caught like 40 rainbow trout per day while still doing some farming dailies, by using mostly trout bait and feeding some of my catches back into the bait maker.

Now i want to see how min max speedrunners will use these new 1.6 things, since as long as you rush the community center and fish for most profitable fishes it might be possible to get tons of money in year 1 via legendary fish and lava eel and that's probably going to allow insane new strategies unless the old ones still give more money tho earning 30k in 1 day in spring year 1 is probably not that easy to achieve and with joja you can prb skip easy to ginger island very early and get to volcano and golden walnut room for legendary fiah qi quest

Currently if you do something like make pickles or jam… But you’re not level 10 farming yet you can hold onto it until you are and get more money the price doesn’t set when it’s made. I generally would like to hope that that is the case for stuff like the smoker but I wondered if it had been tested. I.e. if you smoke fish when you’re like level two or three fishing and hold onto it until you’re at least level five for the first fish price boost - would it sell for more automatically or is the price fixed when you smoke it ? I am on mobile by the way and I can’t actually play 1.6 yet. I mean I would assume that it would work like the other stuff but as it’s a new function maybe it doesn’t.

The sell price is determined by the profession you have the moment you sell it. So if you throw it in a box until artisan you'll be just fine!

so with artisen and angler legend ll sells for 42000 g and its very good way of late game money its about 1.2 mil day with one quest if you get 10 a day with good fishing prepration

Explanation on the new bait(maker)s would be very appreciated, especially since wiki doesn't really say anything about them as of now.

Cave fishing is now so valid. Bring a deluxe bait maker down to 60F and fish those ice pips! Or fish Super Cucumbers with the quality bobber. Even mid to late game I still find the fish smoker useful.

I think a short for the bait machine smoker combo could be good in case you don’t want to make a whole video on it. As I’d be interested 🤷‍♂️

I'm waiting for 1.6 to come to console , one thing I'm realy looking for is a no energie run. And here comes my question , do you want do give it a look while time is slowly ticking to consol 1.6

fish smokers are honestly insane, with a full fishing loadout + challenge bait. you can easily stock up 300k in lava eels a day, and unlike skull cavern diving there's much less time and coal spent processing iridum bars and much less money spent on explosive ammo/bombs, it's nuts.

I have a gold caught Legend, I have the Angler and Artisan trades. I placed it in the smoker, when it came out the sell price was $30,499!!!

I got a living hat day 1 spring year 1 on my first savefile on PC on the new farm in 1.6

iridium quality Legend II can be caught up to 15-20 times per day if you fish with max stats for a full day. Easy 800K per day for 3 days during the quest!

I find it hilarious whenever someone smokes the legend.

I believe technically it’s more profitable to smoke any fish that sells for 140 or more, assuming you buy coal after year 1. (140 x 2.8) - 250 = 142 After you subtract the 250 coin cost of the coal you’d still technically make 2 coin more than if you just sold the fish without smoking. I suppose though if someone was that worried about the price of coal for their smokers, they should just farm dust sprites and tell themselves that each coal is worth 250 coin to justify their time spent in the mines.

Now there's legend II farming for money ! You can use the quality bobber for the iridium quality!

but it can can get BETTER, the problem with going for catfish is consistency and if you do it too much you get annoyed of all the fishing. the solution im preaching is to go lazy with the hook tackle and the new challenge bait (mastery needed so super late game). hook tackle can candle the fish of ginger island port with almost no problem for triple iridium catches. all 3 fish that appear there are lionfish, flounder and tuna. lionfish and flounder are autocatches no issue at level 10 and tuna only needs 1 or 2 button presses so almost autocatch, a +3 fishing dish or better is recommended but definitely not required. the problem here is the challenge bait so i recommend the preserving enchantment yes other fishes have more value but the sheer consistency and ease of use is unmatched imo. Every single catch is 1770g after smoker/artisan/angler and minus Y2 coal, again PER CATCH. sidenote, mad respect for putting the tldr at the beggining, cheers.

Easiest way I found to get cave jellies is hunting for lava eels on floor 100. I got 7 before the first lava eel bite.

Man, I love that fishing is now a profitable method of money making. My beloved riverlands farm needed the buff desperately as well looool

What I do in situations where one reagent is of unknown value is to say "Here's what this reagent is worth if you use this method" For example that's how I was able to determine that Fairy Rose blows every other crop out of the water during Fall. (still worse than starfruit, tho)

Bait maker + Stonefish is pretty strong in the early game/ 1st year its easier then catfish to catch, no need for weather conditions and its sell for 300g at base value so its always worth the coal even on y2 price.

The problem with Stonefish is you're going to waste a lot of bait on the Algea trash.

Lava Eel fishing is busted once you have the means to do it. Lava Eel bait, quality bobber, then another bobber of choice (cork or trap for easier catching, dressed spinner if you're super good at the mini-game) Enchantment on the pole for bar size, buff food (chowder is only +3, but commonly drops out of mystery boxes) and you don't have to wait for weather or season.

Lava Eel bait doesn't seem like it would do anything at all. You can literally only hook Lava Eel or trash and I don't think the Bait removes trash chance.

Does this make the fish ponds more worthwhile? (I like the fish ponds cause i dont LOVE the fishing game)

If Angler and Artisan stack, that means the maximum you can earn for a single catch is 126,000g. Perfect Legend II with challenge bait (5,000*3*2*2*1.5*1.4). If you can do this a few times per day, it becomes a money maker competitive with Skull Cavern dives. Getting a perfect catch might seem like a tall order, but with 17 fishing (master + qi seafoam + sea jelly) and two cork bobbers, you can fill over half the fishing bar. With enough practice, getting perfect legend should be possible semi consistently.

Hunt the legend Jr with quality bobber trap bobber and wild bait then smoke them you make a ridiculous amount of money

I absolutely did smoke the legend year 1 and I do not regret it

Yes, it's just not as strong.

because of the coal nodes now coal isnt a issue for me anymore. im still on around 500 coal right now and i smoke every fish i sell now. im just wondering how many smokers i should make cause it smokes preety fast and 2 seams to do any job i need.

Sadly I don't think bait maker bait made from the 2nd set of legendary fish actually works. My bite rate on Legend II with the bait was only 1/10, which is the base bite rate.

funnily enough i already just decided to only smoke fish worth 100 or more, because i wanted to cut down on how much coal i was going through, and i still kept running out of coal

Main thing is, with the addition of coal nodes coals are a lot less valuable now and I constantly hold more than 300 of them
